Cape Vulture
are cape vultures even common in captivity? definitely not in european zoos
i have a feeling people are thinking of the eurasian griffon, but voting cape because of list rules, thinking eurasian griffon will not be accepted
@Matyej167 which is why i think you should make sure the direct eurasian griffon votes appears in the breakdown, as eurasian griffon is also found in africa
i would help you, but we need to fix my permissions issue

Certainly, when I think of an African griffon vulture I think of the Ruppell's griffon - one of the more common African vultures in European zoos and the most common in North America, and the species my local zoo keeps.

this is the point i'm trying to make actually
ruppell's (CR) has a lot more rep in zoos with 75 holdings but only has 1 vote on this list, while cape vulture (VU) only has 1 holding in the whole of eaza, a single zoo in the uk
some other mainly african vultures common in eaza are hooded (82 holdings, CR), white backed (63 holdings, CR) and palm nut (44 holdings, LC) vultures
so i was very confused about the constant cape griffon votes lately, i thought maybe people think of ruppell's griffon or eurasian griffon which are more common in zoos
i have a feeling we should let people change their old votes, if this was what they were really thinking and want
we should also let eurasian griffon appear on the list since it is also found in parts of africa

I think those were the two I was thinking of, particularly Ruppell's

Which one is more common in North American zoos?
According to the post I have included below about birds of prey in North American zoos, the African vultures, from most to least commonly-kept, are:

Ruppell's griffon (13 zoos)
Hooded (11 zoos)
Lappet-faced (7 zoos)
Cape griffon (6 zoos)
White-backed (4 zoos)
Palm nut (4 zoos)
Egyptian (3 zoos)
White-headed (2 zoos)
Eurasian griffon (1 zoo)
Lammergeier (1 zoo)

Unfortunately American collections are a lot more private with their full species lists than European collections, so these lists take a lot of independent research.

ok so let's wrap this up once and for all
sorry to tag you guys again, but we are trying to make sure votes represent actual demand and avoid confusion for frontier

the votes that are already clear:
@Aramar: eurasian griffon
@SuzieSky: ruppell's
@Sindy: cape
@Antimony96: ruppell's
@The Carcharodontogenius: cape

what we need to know still:
@Barje
@FlameWizard492
@Joshinator710

to make it easier for you to decide, here is some information on each:

ruppell's griffon (gyps rueppelli)
  • 75 eaza zoos
  • 13 na zoos
  • critically endangered
cape griffon (gyps coprotheres)
  • 1 eaza zoo
  • 6 na zoos
  • vulnerable
eurasian griffon (gyps fulvus)
  • 241 eaza zoos
  • 1 na zoo
  • least concern
we are considering to possibly place any unspecified griffon votes into "any from continent"

I totally understand if it was accidentally missed, but I replied a while ago and said Cape.

no it wasn't missed, but now ruppell's is also in the mix, so we wanted to ask again (before we didn't offer it as an alternative, not realising they are also griffons)
people could have felt forced to vote one way, when they actually wanted ruppell's for instance
i moved your name up to the known cateogry
