A Renewed Journey for the Golconda

17 JUN 3308
The generation ship Golconda has departed from the Upaniklis system with much of its former population on board.

Three years ago, the Golcondans abandoned their ship and resettled at the Forester’s Choice outpost in Upaniklis. Approximately 60% of these 70,000 people have now elected to resume their itinerant lifestyle aboard the vessel, which was recently upgraded with modern megaship technology by the Artificers Clan.

The Federation has made assurances that the Golconda is under its protection, and is equipped with comms systems to summon aid if needed. The Forester’s Choice outpost remains operational and will continue to export Apa Vietti, a unique alcoholic spirit.

Shortly before the Golconda made its first jump into hyperspace, Vox Galactica published a statement from Commander Javi Alvarado:

“The last few weeks have been a bittersweet experience for me, watching these people prepare to return to their old home. My plan was to keep making trade runs to the outpost, but when Captain Forester asked me to join them on their voyage, I agreed without hesitation. It’s hardwired into Golcondan culture to distrust outsiders, so I know what a rare honour this invitation is.”

“The Golconda can now leap rather than crawl between the stars, and the whole galaxy is its horizon. For the first time in my piloting career, I have no idea what my destination is. But at least I’ll be travelling in the company of born explorers.”

No pilots alert notice...
So no in game content the ship will not be found, its now out of game content...
Are you sure about that? I think it would be awesome if someone at Frontier is jumping the Golconda on a weekly basis like we would jump a fleet carrier, destination only known to them, but like a fleet carrier out in the black, encounterable by anyone who might perchance jump into the system it currently resides.

Would really add to the Elite tapestry of life that the game builds around its modest foundations :)

In practical terms, it's probably a "how would you tell". Even restricting it to the 500LY/week speed of a dockable NPC megaship its first jump would give it a choice of something like 250,000 destinations, and if it wasn't found in that first week its subsequent jumps would be exponentially less likely to be discovered.

The lack of "PF Alert" at the very least means that people aren't expected to go looking for it. Sure, it could have already been added to another system, we'll never know.

Hi All :)

Hmm, I would have liked to have had the chance to follow or dock at the Golconda on it's journey :(
So, we don't know which direction, or how far it's first jump might take it. Is it's 'designation' roughly that of a normal Carrier? (though it's described as a Megaship) 🤷‍♂️
The 'storyline' seems a bit weak at the moment, I would imagine Frontier will weave a story / missions etc. around this ship in the near future, One can only hope. 🙁

Jack :)

Non landable mega ship... dont allow any one uninvited on via ship and as the Story stated the new pilot was the only one they invited...
Unlike the cargo megaships these ships have station level fire power to keep people out...
They just paid trillions out in tritium fuel costs so they could be on there own not with random no bodies lol...

I'm curious if the system population will be updated - 60% of 70,000 gives us a tangible number that would need to be updated. With the rounding it would go down from 7.2 million to 7.1.

Hi All :)

I just like to think of it as a mobile Raxxla - out there, but where?

🤔...Yes, that's a reasonable way of looking at it!

Unless it pops up in Galnet again.

Yup, that's almost certainly (I think as you do) going to be another item in Galnet sometime in the future, unless of course as Old Duck surmises somebody just happens to come across it in one of the systems, and reports it back to the general community.

Ah well, we'll just have to wait and see.

So new players won't be able to scan its logs to add them to their Codex.

That sucks.
Yeah, it does, but obviously if it materialises as another part of the BGS they'll get a chance to do that, hopefully.
I'm 11,500ly out from Sol at the moment exploring, but I'm going to keep a eye out for any developments with this news item. ;)

Jack :)

That sucks.
Yes and no.

I see it as part of the joy of being in an ongoing environment where time keeps on ticking along at 60 seconds per minute.

But it sucks in the same way as no one now will see Concorde break through the clouds and do a largely unexpected flypast as I did back in the 1980s, but that is the nature of time it keeps moving.

its first jump would give it a choice of something like 250,000 destinations

There was a theory mentioned in a stream that the Golconda would continue their journey in the same direction. Draw a line from Sol through Upaniklis, extend it 500ly, then look for systems close to that line. With a bit of vector math, a few EDSM queries and a hot Saturday, I did that. I visited stars within 2ly from the path and all the systems on an economy route inbetween. With the expected results of nothing.

The list gets large fast for even small deviations from the line. Maybe I'll spend an evening extending the search radius at 500ly from Upaniklis but I don't really see a possibility.
It's just too many systems and a whole fleet of generation ships could park just right next star, never to be found. That won't stop anyone from trying, though :p

Sure, it could have already been added to another system, we'll never know.

Who decided to make space this vastly hugely mind-bogglingly big, anyway. Big mistake in my books.

In case anyone else wants to go on a hunt, here's a list of systems known to EDSM that lie within 5ly around a vector from Sol through Upaniklis onwards:
