Star Control 2: The Ur-Quan Masters from 1992 is a legendary space game that has inspired aspects of many others. There was some mexican standoff type situation with rights where the publisher owned the title and the developers owned everything else. There was a sequel but not by the original creators and a newer "Star Control" title by current license holder. However, the original creators have been working on getting their a sequel of their own.
Seems like they rebranded it to "Free Stars" and released the original version free on steam couple of months back. The 3DO version, I believe. It's been open source for years, so this was just to get some attention for the main event, which is now. There is a Kickstarter campaign for a sequel, Free Stars: Children of Infinity.
