Thinking about buying

what does the 75$ beta version give you? It says stuff yet to be announced. SC has 29 currently plus the variations like the aurora and hornet. Which from what i've seen(correct me if i'm wrong) the way they do the variationsyou can't get that just with hardpoints and module upgrades in elite. They change the base stats for those variations to be effective(their not always). My main issue with SCs flight model is I know their going for ultrarealistic and the aurora feels like a brick to fly.

That we know of:
  • Immediate access to the game in it's current beta state. Beta 3.9 released on Thursday 20th November, Preview Build released on Saturday 22nd November. Assuming no wipe once the Preview Build is out (nothing confirmed) you get a 24 day head start on those coming to the game on December 16th.
  • Access to the Sol System - It's unclear how this will be enforced but Beta users will have a permit to visit our home system without having to earn reputation in order to get it.
  • 25% off in-game ship insurance cost for life - When your ship is destroyed it'll cost you less to replace it.
  • Free access to 1 of 5 new ships when it becomes available - This one was also a bit vague but I'd expect it may be a reputation locked vessel that you can get regardless of your reputation with the faction selling it.

Anything else would be the same as the benefits for getting the Mercenary Edition.

I dont think you find this being too much different in that regards. If its the flight models you dont like I think you could find you dont like either game.

@cindylo

Caveat Emptor

Its an amazing game, but believe that nothing is concrete, and all claims are ambit

Large expansions are at extra cost, small updates FOC. Some of the large expansions are planet landings and walking around/FPS style stuff - with a universe this size you can imagine these are huge jobs.

I'm hearing that a lot but also hearing the elites is more forgiving and is more arcade than SCs is. I've also heard several people say they could play elite but had issues with the way SC did it.

The flight model's not true Newtonian, but that's to avoid the "turrets in space" effect you can get with such a model. I'd put ED in more of a semi-atmospheric flight model. You can turn off the flight assist and get close to a Newtonian model though, because everyone likes to sidestrafe. I find personally the model here to be a fun and engaging one, which was their intent over a full-on realism. The side-to-side is the most noticeable from trueNewt, you have very limited yaw by design. A lot more emphasis on rollover to acquire and keep on your target.

From the flight model comparsion of the the two that I saw with the flight assist on you get more of an arcadey style feel than the full on newtonian realism that SC is going for. Turning it off looks to give you close to SCs model.

From videos it looks like SC is a more arcadey style gameplay to me. Like a flying turret. It looks more forgiving cos you can turn on a sixpence.

6 mins in. Try to do that on elite and somebody would be scraping you off that asteroid :)

I did a rough browse on star citizen's website and if you ignore the variations (Only thing thats different is the internals and paint job which you can customize in elite anyways) of a ship and just go by different hulls it looks like +- 30.

It's RSI's wonderful money making machine, selling ships 2 years before the games out. I mean $110 for a ship ?

That's basically the only prayer that the game has of not going bankrupt. Roberts has amazing ideas but man did SC overpromise on the features... just looking at what he'd promised, I'd have guessed it to be a $500 million game, not a $55 million game.

You got it, potential CMDR. FAOff turns off your thruster autocorrect basically. More difficult to master control over but it provides more control overall when you do. Kind of like standard vs automatic gears for auto racing.

For me it "feels" more like epic spacefitan than the trueNewt. I mean nobody watched Star Wars and said "goodness, what an unrealistic flight model they're using! Shameful." It was "LOOKIT - SPACESHIPS PEWING ALL OVER THE PLACE YEEEAAAHH". ED is going for, and succeding imo, in getting the feel right for the genre.

Thing that video is old and the controls have been updated so many times and I can tell you it is not that smooth at all. Also from memory he's using a x360 controller or joystick and not a mouse. If it try to fly like that in my aurora it turns like a semi on a dime.

I think you will find this about the same. You might have to bite the bullet and get yourself a joystick.

Hey guys and gals I need some help here. I've been trying to decide whether to buy this game or not and there are some things I can't seem to find online(pardon me if there's a lot). Like are the expansions going to be free like EVE or do you have to pay for them all like the DLC system for most games. And is there a planned features area where I can see what they want to do with the game, like planet landing, fps combat, etc? Is it going to have a monthly fee or is it just one time payment then you're good to go? Also with it having 400 billion systems are they going to get a bit repetitive since they have to be randomly generated? Are there going to be more ships in the game with more interesting designs than just variations on a box or rectangle with thrusters? Can we pilot "capital" ship sized ships? Are all the stations in the game a cylinder with a slot entrance or is there some variety in that mix? And probably the biggest question I have is how much of a pain in the ass in piloting? I've already backed SC for example but I don't play it much because the piloting is a gigantic pain in the ass for me. I like realism but to an extent where I can still have fun. I guess the easiest definition would be kinda like warthunder if you're going for the ship following the cursor, kind of an arcade style I guess.

Most of your questions have been answered already but with regards to the piloting bit... It's often referred to as 'Spitfires in space' and it is a pretty accurate description. It is far from a pain in the bum, it's tremendous fun imho. Unless you turn flight assist off, you are basically flying a plane that can also fly laterally if you use the required controls. For example, if you get into a classic turning war with another ship you can apply lateral trust up while pulling up to close the gap. Or while running away and being shot at, you can barrel roll and apply sideways thrust to make yourself a harder target (effectively cork screw). It has some other strange features like your turn rate is increased if your throttle is in the blue zone and your turn rate is dramatically increased when you press the engine boost button.

Is it how spaceships would fly in 3300?.... probably not (although there is game lore to explain it, basically your main engines use thrust vectoring and your manoeuvring thrusters are weak), but it's great fun anyway.

Going back to your other question about repetition. Just write that worry off. Space is mind-bogglingly enormous, everything that exists in reality conforms to laws/rules or it wouldn't exist. Elite isn't using random numbers to create everything. It is using a set of rules and pseudo random numbers (in other words numbers that seem random but are reproducible) in an attempt to replicate our actual galaxy. The real galaxy is repetitive because it is formed by rules.... that doesn't mean it is boring and a group of artists manually drawing things like planets can't make things that much more interesting or it won't look right. A planet shaped like a hexagon would be interesting but it is bonkers because it doesn't conform to the rules.

I flew to a system with 12 different stars in it today, all of which were in realistic orbits .. that's awesome. How could it be more for interesting? Just buy it mate... or wait until the 16th of December and then buy it.

Most people on here seem to use the x52. If you have a PS3/4 or xbox controller lying around that works great too.

Invest in a joystick and then enjoy both games. It seems like a good investment to me.

Yea it's nice but it also has a nice 150-200$ price tag. I do have a gamestop brand usb ps3 controller if it would recognize that. SC doesn't sadly I tried it a few days ago.

Are there any nice joysticks that won't cost me my liver?

Thrustmaster T-Flight Hotas X is pretty cheap. I don't know if it's any good mind. I'm using an Xbox 360 controller and it works fine (I did have to change the mapping a bit so that the controls change when my landing gear is down though). I'm still trying to find a buyer for my mothers left kidney, after the deal is done I'm planning on getting an X52 pro.

Not sure, normal sony ones work fine. Maybe get a PS4 controller for $50

I've tried the Thrustmaster-X, t1600 and the X52-Pro. Between voice attack and the customizability of how thrust can work a throttle isn't even needed. For price the T1600 is awesome, decent quality and Hall sensors. It will last unless you mangle it. I Use it as thrust in left hand when using eagle/sidey/viper and pro throttle for big ships and the pro for right hand. You could easily go with gamepad or kb for left hand though.

The X was good for the price, impressed with the stick which feels better than the pro even. Throttle not so hot but I knew that when I got it. Just wanted to try a HOTAS.

On a budget I'd go with T1600 and just use KB for throttle. Or even the slider on it that I use for sensors. Probably KB because I use my lateral/vert thrust in the eagle often. Hell if I wasn't lazy just the T1600 and some clever binding + voice attack (get it) would do.

Either why I highly suggest a magnetic sensor unit for purely durability and performance. After all, you buy too cheap and you go through 5 30's for every 65, ya dig?
