Thargoid War: The Beginning of the End!

As the title says... I have discussed this with a couple of people who have 10,000+ hours in the game and the conclusion we have come to is that it is quite possible that Frontier is in fact bringing Elite: Dangerous' story and game play to an end. It's increasingly looking like the Thargoids will destroy the bubble.

What we don't know is what will happen after it's finished... I have suggested that Frontier is going to scatter the factions around the galaxy to those places that are closed by unobtainable permits. There are several "cluster" systems around the galaxy that are locked with no known way to get the permits. So I have suggested that Frontiers end game is to make the game single player offline with the ability to connect with friends over the internet when they shut it down. That the galaxy will have each faction spread around the galaxy so that players have something to do instead of sitting in one spot.

My friends think they'll shut down the servers and call it the end. Or they don't know... What do you think?

This is a theory that has been peddled endlessly in youtube comments over the past few months, along with the usual 'only 100 people are still playing' comments from people who 'left to play SC five years ago' but somehow still manage to comment on every single ED video they can find.

If there's going to be a planned shutdown the first hint would be the closing of the arx store, because selling in-game currency to people for a game you're going to shutter would be very, very bad.

But that's logical, and most of the 'dead gaem' comments don't employ a whole lot of that.

Only got part way through the first para, and "DOOM thread" sprung to mind.

You and your friends may have a bit of groupthink going on.

Logically, I suppose the first to get closed down would be the legacy version. After all, there is going to be another round of console transfers to PC. This would reduce the legacy player base.

I have to say that this was among the first things that came to my mind when the war started. Not only because of the war, but because of what someone said on the stream - that there's no escaping to Colonia f.ex - you either fight, or the war will come to you sooner or later. So to me it started to look like a blackmail - players will either play the game and stop the Thargoids, or - if not enough players come back to the game and engage - Thargoids will win and it will be a good place to show "the end" credits.
I'm not saying I actually believe that - but that was impression I got that and I thought it would be funny if true.

Unlikely in my opinion since from my experience of engaging with many businesses over the years, no one really make a concerted and planned effort to close a business or a department.

If it really were to end, it will happen abruptly like the case of the Console situation...when the mathematics and business case no longer make sense it will immediately end and/or after a short period of trying to regurgitate/revive the numbers.

Elite is still beautiful and the only game of its kind where you can wander in the "real" galaxy...and do a myriads of things. I am already planning to buy the next DLC. :)

It's a sort of plausible theory.
However, at the rate the Thargoid invasion progresses, it will take many many years till they waste the entire bubble
So, if FDev wants to put an End to Elite Dangerous in a narrative tied manner, they really need to up the Thargoid game

What we don't know is what will happen after it's finished...

Elite V?

I think the game is just beginning. We are finnaly in an actual Galactic War - it's not going to end any time soon, if ever. This could become an endless war, while they work on narrative.
I think it's the best thing that ever happen to this game, and in Space games in general. A first Galactic War in a video game. No one has ever done this on such grand scale.

This War gave me hope that we will see Thargoid troops in the future. And maybe even Guardians, and who know what else is hiding out there.

As a fellow Elite: Dangerous player with over 10000 hours in game, I can understand the concern regarding the game's future. While it's true that Frontier has been focusing on the Thargoid storyline in recent updates, it's important to remember that Elite: Dangerous is an ever-evolving game with constant updates and changes.

Personally, I don't believe that Frontier is planning to bring the game to an end anytime soon. There are still plenty of mysteries and storylines to explore within the game, and with the Odyssey expansion, it seems that Frontier has big plans for the future of Elite: Dangerous.

As for the possibility of scattering factions around the galaxy or making the game single-player offline, I think it's unlikely. Elite: Dangerous has always been a multiplayer game, and while it's possible to play solo, the game's community and social aspects are a huge part of its appeal.

Ultimately, we can only speculate about what Frontier's plans are for Elite: Dangerous. But as long as the game continues to attract a dedicated player base, I'm confident that Frontier will continue to support it for years to come.

More Doom?

At the present rate, it will take the Thargoids 4 years to wipe out the human bubble, and yes they could use that as an excuse to shut the game down. However, I feel that is unlikely. They are not letting this war run its course as it is.

There is additional narrative coming into the game which could swing the game back into humanity's favour (i.e. ways to infiltrate and remove Maelstroms) , which will certainly involve update 15 and maybe 16 as well. The thargoid war has the potential to be another 18 month narrative story like Azimuth, and at the moment, it hasn't impacted any of the games other functionality (i.e. No Engineering bases have been lost, Powerplay HQ's over run).

I think so, too. It will be a matter of weeks, not months. The one day we will grind along as usual, the next FDev will tell us that the servers will be shut down in 3 weeks. But at least they will certainly forward our valuable feedback. I also think that they will happily sell ARX until the last day. I guess they'd even force an "update" that will remove the game from the hard-drive in due time. Just... because.
But is that day tomorrow? I don't think so. I hope it is not.

Could be a possible solution, in fact the development seems to be nearly stopped regarding to the outcome after EDO.

Good to see the Doombusters are still around.

If narrative is all we’re getting (who knows), this at least has some plausibility.
