I freely admit that I can't keep up with this.

take another 15 minute break :).

Make a cup of tea. Try to gain some perspective.

So only the player can discover things, or have agency in offline, OK. I kind of get it but it seems to make a very sterile universe. I recognise this is a derail and will exit, but I am trying to better understand what people actually want their (putative) offline experience to be like. Thanks.

Ok, Heres a list off the top of my head:
To not be at the mercy of external effects like
.Lag spikes
.Player influence on markets and such
.Acts of God on servers or connection lines
.Unreliable/inconsistent connections
The ability to play at all without a constant internet connection
To cheat without consequence or affecting anyone but the cheater
To mod
To be able to pause gameplay when needed.
Offline means no DRM
To play when the servers shut down or get bogged down.

Ive missed something out, Im sure of it

Even assuming the playing population of ED was 100,000 users, and all those users were playing simultaneously and existing in a unique system, that still leaves 99.9% of the game void of human players at any one time.

Do you really think 99.98% of ED really requires the final 0.02% to function?

We are more insignificant that we think.

I still play the original BBC Elite and Frontier, yes. Actually I was playing Elite only 4 days ago.

There are some retro enthusiasts. My question was addressed to the quoted poster though. Personally I din't see any point in continuing to play the old versions. The memories are better than the reality.

We all have something like that though. I will play the original Quest for Glory again some day.

Anyone else going to quote and reply :p

That's because the mind add a lot of embellishment to them

Yes that mosstly my own list with one Exception....I will not Cheat...for that I have Solo Mode....;)
I will add...

I must work for my Money and My Family need me too...so I can be 24/7 Online.

But other thing which really right now offends me... in one of the Links from New Portals which actually report about this Thread/Offline gone feature, there was a Post from David Braben himself:
I really hope it wasn´t him, because he said in short..."Yes 2 Years I go I think it will be good, Now I change my Mind.....If you don´t like take refund and Go...", sorry if Poster in Community react so, it not good, but reasonable.
But an Developer/Company Own shout not react so....So I really hope it was only an Fake.

he added those as reasons not to play online ;)

My bad then for mis interpreting ;)

I do think that hacking, pirating etc is no excuse for not having offline.
If they fear people making their own servers and plauing for free guess what It is going to happen. It has happen to mmos like wow, lineage 2. We used to host wow and lineage 2 servers on lan parties back home.

I saw that. I am sure it is fake.

What possessed him is common sense and past history; you can count on one hand the number of commercial development studios that have released the full source code to their game engines and/or server infrastructures after they have gone bust.

Why? Well when an online game ceases functioning, it is usually due to it becoming financially insolvent and thus unable to pay off it's debts or keep up with it's creditors. If this happens bankruptcy and selling off of assets is usually one of the ways of proceeding forward, guess what assets a gaming studio usually has?

For online games that do end up being supported after they have ceased operating, it is usually because of ex-employees or dedicated and extremely talented fans of the game that rebuild from scratch whatever missing components, (i.e. server infrastructure), to get the game running again.
Check out the history of Allegiance. If Microsoft did it, I trust FD to do it as well.

Ok, so there are good things and bad things to come with this.

Obviously, the bad thing first. Always online...
Server outages means downtime for playing. DDoS attacks (and equivalent) also can mean downtime. Let's not rule it out, especially considering WoW was recently DDoS'd. It's an on going fight that can't be pre-empted.
No internet connection, means no playtime. Also an issue.

Let's also look at the other sides/ counters.

Always online = no (or very limited) pirated copies of the game.
Let's be honest, who here doesn't have always online broadband/ fibre/cable? I can understand if people have intermittent connectivity issues, but to have no internet at all? That's not so common now.
What I do hope is that the system mitigates intermittent connectivity issues and is able to precache some functions of the game for when it goes offline.

From what I have noticed already, there are a lot of functions that are server sided. One that I noticed recently was refining.
When the server was playing up, I was mining. Picked up a chunk of material and the cargo thing was stuck on processing.
Then at the top left, it came up with a message with something along the lines of that the Refinery couldn't connect to some server.
It's quite shocking that even the refining itself (which I don't think should be server sided) is server sided. I don't see how refining is dynamic in anyway, when it just calculates percentages of materials.

It's very strange that they are going down this route, but I can also understand why.
There is always a threat of piracy, as well as the inability to upload dynamic data to players.
If something huge is going down in the galaxy... say some massive event, they want everyone to get involved... be it solo play, private group or online. The only way to do that would be to have online connection.
