Is proud to present

The Empire Hustle

8th April 3309-16th April 3309

Hosted by Commander Sulu

As part of the Magic 8-Ball 2 Swift Sixteen series of events

Please use Horizons 4.0 if possible.

(Although it is not strictly essential for most races)
Welcome to the first race of the year, “The Empire Hustle”. This is the first in the magic 8 Ball 2 Swift Sixteen series being held throughout 3309. The race is a completely honest rehash of events previously run by Cmdr Furrycat and Cmdr PolarBruski. Judging by the title you can well imagine it is set in the Empire. Not only that, but all of the ships except the regulation Cobra must be of Imperial design. It is a simple race involving just five starports set a short distance apart. The task is to fly to each station, loop it and dock as fast as possible. That`s it!

The stations are as follows -

  • Agnews` Folly - Vequess
  • Gurevich Orbital - LHS 1380
  • Gottlob Frege Coliseum - Fawaol
  • Polya Coliseum - Aymifa
  • Artsutanov Station - Jumuzgo

You must start and finish at Agnews` Folly. Apart from that you can do as you please (As long as you loop & dock at all stations that is!). When arriving at the station, sight the blue atmosphere shield of the slot (the airlock if you will), request docking, then loop the station before actually docking. A loop must be performed before the final landing at Agnew`s folly as well. For those unsure about this, here is a video of a Loop & Dock -

There will be a regulation ship which as in the previous championship will be the venerable Cobra mk III. The only change will be no weapons. Here is a link to that build -

The Unlimited class will have four choices and an overall board for championship points any of which can be entered depending on the ships you have available to you. They will be as follows –

  • Ultra-Light Imperial Eagle
  • Light Imperial Courier
  • Medium Imperial Clipper
  • Heavy Imperial Cutter

You are encouraged to enter any or all of the 4 ship choices as you wish in the unlimited, but only the fastest of your runs will go on to the main board. The results of each class will still be shown in separate boards.

There will be a couple of rules unfortunately as this is a race after all.
  • No Super Cruise Assist
  • No docking computers
  • No rebuys
  • No FSD boosting (Jet Cone or Synthesis)
  • The blue of the atmosphere shield must be seen upon docking request.
  • Cmdr Sulu is in charge!
In the event of any issues or ties the organizers will make the final decision.

You may engineer the unlimited ships in any way you wish except for the above items. Feel free to fit as many loud exhausts and chrome valve covers as you want or need.

Race Entries

You can use video or screenshots for this race using the usual links. i.e Imgur / Youtube etc. screen shots are preferred but not essential. If using pictures, then for the loop around you must show the “mailslot” and your HUD clock with docking approved before looping, a picture of the rear of the station and one of you docked showing the clock again. Please include a shot of your ship modules. If sending video also please show the modules screen.

Here is a sample set of pictures –

It has been noted that an option to activate/deactivate the HUD clock exists. This must be visible at all times. If you are unsure how to do this then please look at the following picture on Imgur which shows how to activate the clock –

You will need to provide the following evidence –

Your Name

Regulation or Unlimited

Unlimited ship if applicable

Ship Name

Time claimed

Evidence link (Imgur / you tube etc)

Your empire rank

Interesting comments or happenings. (Optional)

Intent to race. Not sure about which ships yet - although the Imperial Driftship Cutter might prove a challenge without the ADC.

Race preparation...

ah, sure. Here:

The Cutter is pretty much hilarious and if you own one you must try it. It will not be a delicate flight but is "interesting". I managed twice to get a bounty on my head testing it out.

Intent to fly around the course teaching my wife new swear words (She thinks she's heard them all - bless...)
Imperial Cobra There Goes Me Whippet (It has a pic of the Emperor pasted on the side)
Imperial Courier Me Whippet's On Fire!
and the other 3 Imperials will probably make an appearance, possibly even painted go-faster red and with new Whippet names.

Couple of questions/issues:
  1. Do we have to go outside the rings like in the video, or are we allowed to go inside and get blatted by various struts and sticky-out bits?
  2. This laptop is approaching its 8th birthday, and it's always been creaking at the seams running E: D. Odyssey is an exercise in crashes and multi-minute pauses, so I will be racing in Legacy only.

This was before I Imperialised it, obviously... :D

There is no preference on the rings but outside is easier and smoother and the inside is much tighter and in the slower ships will be riskier. It is your choice however.
Edit: I am unable to test in legacy mode but suspect it will not matter much. Time will tell.

Intent to stay out of hospital and race!
Regulation Cobra MkIII: Null Geodesic
(Probable) Imperial Courier. Thinking about buying a dedicated racing courier rather than changing the loadout of the Kongming but we'll see.
(Possible) Imperial Eagle. The Toya is a racing ship so she should be more or less ready to go, though I think the Courier's range gives it the advantage on this course.
(Unlikely but maybe) Imperial Clipper. I haven't raced the Shiro Tengu in a while but she's in a speed cargo-running configuration suitable for taking part in CGs in Open but I need to get her a double-engineered FSD first, else the range disadvantage will be too great (I have a no-Guardians rule for this ship).
(In my dreams). Imperial Cutter. Yes I have one but I have never flown the Tomorrow's Beauty in a meaningful way.

Looking forward to it!

I modded an existing Courier but would say that if you have the mats to engineer a dedicated one from scratch then maybe do so as it took me ages to balance it out. It would have been easier to build one now I think about it.

If my musings are right, you'll need 48.07 ly single jump range in order to make it to every system in one jump. Possible in the iCourier or in a dedicated racing Cutter (nope, not going to go that way - Slip Slidin' may have to lose some weight, but otherwise run as she is). Haven't checked the Clipper, but seems impossible in an iEagle.

And the Courier would still be faster than the iEagle in a straight run - or at least I can't seem to get the iEagle's mass low enough to profit from enhanced/DD thrusters.

I managed to get 855 m/s with 44ly out of a racing trim iEagle. Interesting as while it is technically slower than the Courier, it will turn a tad faster. I will not divulge my testing results however. I agree that I could only get the Courier to single jump numbers quite easily . The rest are wait and see. In build testing I actually had the ICourier pushing near 60ly, but it detracted from racing ability a bit.
