Game Discussions Cyberpunk 2077 - official gameplay

I did the mistake to see Edgerunners first, on Netflix - and now, i dont really fell like installing the game, even tho i have it in my Steam library, since i know damn well that i rather prefer the anime gfx from the Edgerunners to the realistic appearance in the game
Consider installing reshade and tweaking it for a cel-shaded look

Really? I heard so many found it good.
Must be a case of spicy burrito ;) It's indeed really good, in the quite unique style of Studio Trigger - with their usual animation quirks (they love the "deranged animation" look a lot... same team did Gurren Lagann, Kill La Kill or the quite crazy Space Patrol Luluco).
YMMV of course if you are not open to anime style you'll immediately hate it.

Hit or miss. I love classics like Akira and Ghost in the Shell but find Dragonballs trash. It depends on the story, I'd say.

Akira or GitS are both Seinen manga. Dragonball is a Shonen. Different age targets ;) What you say is you like Seinen which are targeted to adults. Cowboy Bebop is another example of a seinen. Shonen like Dragonball, Naruto, etc. are targeted to kids and teenagers. FWIW Edgerunners is definitely for adults even though the quite deranged animation style might indicate otherwise. And yeah the difference is in the themes and story - something like Ergo Proxy (another seinen), or Code Geass, or Psycho Pass (more cyberpunk !), or most cyberpunk themed anime (Cyber City Oedo 808 being a prime example) actually are all very much into adult territory when talking about themes / story. (I could add Black Lagoon, Berserk, Steins Gate.. these are not cyberpunk but still 100% aimed towards adults)

Well, I did like Heidi and Captain Future back then. But Tom&Jerry was my fav. And the Roadrunner. Meep, meep!
There was also something Kimba the white Lion? An early anime / cartoon of the Lion King of later Disney. Wow, did I cry when Lion mama spoke from the stars.
We also had "Wicki and the Strong Men" (loose translation) but I don't know where that was produced. We had quite a mix of cartoon art styles on TV.

Those were aimed at children - though Captain Future might get a live adaptation maybe (it's still pretty much vaporware at this point)... Absolutely no relation with any of the anime I mentioned before, I guess a lot of people make the confusion because of the animated medium, but truly that's the only common point. Movies like Akira or Jin Roh (for example) were extremely violent art pieces aimed at adult audiences.

Art pieces fit. What stood out with Akira and Ghost in the Shell was the soundtrack. It was just perfect.

What's interesting with Akira (and Blade Runner too) is they cemented the visuals of Cyberpunk as the "night gloomy city trope" (also Cyber City Oedo 808) in the minds of everyone, to the point that William Gibson (who pioneered the genre) said he would not adapt Neuromancer to the big screen as these titles were even better than his own vision. I'd argue that what he describes in Neuromancer is a bit different (the only one that comes close IMHO is Serial Experiment Lain) - and also the TTRPG was more of a 80's fantasy of the future hence the bright colors and neon lit cities. But yeah, you then had Dark City and Matrix about a decade later that went back to this "film noir" visual style and reinforced this trope. The adaptation by CDPR is interesting in that way as it's blessed by the original author of the TTRPG who created his thing independently from these movies and anime. I would say Shadowrun is closer to that "night city" trope generally speaking - there's a lot of cross referencing between these RPG and people may be mixing them up, which is understandable.

Neo Tokyo is bright though, but the story just doesnt happen there. It's a bit like the table top Cyberpunk sessions - we just always ended up in the combat zone...

Well, this Path Tracing Overdrive mode, it shouldn’t run well on my 3060, but it does and I guess that’s down to the 12gb of VRAM that it has.

Looks absolutely amazing, I can get a decent 30fps with Balanced DLSS at 1080p and everything else maxed out.
If I toggle and tweak I can stretch that out into the 50-60fps range

So to confirm, I’m running path tracing with an i5 9400F, 16gb DDR4 Ram and the 12gb 3060.

I find interesting that CDPR are future proofing their game engine that means there's maybe life beyond that upcoming DLC. Or will they switch to UE5 along with The Witcher franchise, or abandon the Cyberpunk franchise altogether ?

CDProjekt announced last October that CP2077 will be getting a full sequel:

"Orion is a codename for our next Cyberpunk game, which will take the Cyberpunk franchise further and continue harnessing the potential of this dark future universe.

I’m hoping for an engine switch to UE5 as that would possibly open it up to the upcoming universal UE5VR mod - CP2077 is superb in VR even with all the jank associated with the Luke Ross mod method. With the CDP announcement about licensing UE5 it seems highly likely that the next CP game will use it.

REDengine is dead and CDPR will be using UE5 for future titles:

Although CD Projekt Red has enjoyed plenty of success with its own game engine, the potential capabilities of Unreal Engine 5 have clearly proven to be too attractive to pass up for the company.

Read as: Epic made them a licensing offer they could not refuse 😂

Discourse surrounding CD Projekt Red's use of Unreal Engine 5 recently came with the announcement of a ground-up remake for The Witcher, the franchise-launching title that originally released in 2007. This remake will reportedly be created entirely with Unreal Engine 5, along with any future Witcher titles, marking a huge potential shift in what the company will use as standard from now on.

Read as: this will offer them the possibility to resell The Witcher games again and again.

That doesnt answer my question ;) They just upgraded REDengine so it can support path tracing so it's not quite dead yet. They will also release a DLC for CP2077 this year (if things go as planned) that is also using REDengine. TW3 had 2 big DLC, will they make another DLC for CP2077 (so both engines will coexist for still quite a while) or start over with UE5 and a new game ?
