Response:

Because despite being broken, it actually gives me the same joy that got me into gaming in the first place. No other games do. All of the games that I loved were destroyed by greed and incompetence, and there hasn't been anything to replace them until I got into Star Citizen.

No other games give them what they want from a game? A broken buggy alpha? All of the games they loved were "destroyed by greed and incompetence" - oh dear, does someone want to tell them about Chris Roberts? I simply can't image the poor choices this person must have made in their gaming life to only ever have played games that were destroyed like that.

Ah, someone playing they had to build a company first card

11 years ago it was May 2012. At that point in time CIG (or RSI) were just a few people in a basement with a dream putting together a pitch for a videogame. During that year it was announced via a private crowdfunding page in September 2012 and was later joined by a Kickstarter on October 2012 (as their own website crashed repeatedly due to immense traffic from backers). It was in February 2013 that they started building up the studio. At that point they had around 18 people (in the same basement) and only a few of them were actual programmers. They didn't hit the ground running with hundreds of employees on day one or something as some people here may try to imply (would have been great though, but they were just an Indie startup at the time instead of the multiple studios across several countries we have today).

Also...

Effectively development only started in earnest around 2015-2016 when CIG had enough staff including a lot of veteran developers from CryTek.

Feb 2013 only 18 people? Ummm... no, they had a lot more than that and a ton of contractors working on the project.

And even if true, how do they square that with CR, Erin, and Sandi all saying in 2014 that SQ42 was almost complete with SC not far behind?

So effectively development only started a year after CIG said the two games were almost ready?

Hah, someone pushed back....

Working on the concept and pitch for the game, yes. That's what they had been working on for a year.

No… they had a working demo. He literally said “I’m going to jump into the game now” and gave a demo.

Do you have a link of that alleged 2012 demo? The only one I remember was one from several years later where Chris immediately crashed into an asteroid after flying out the hangar. To my knowledge they had nothing except the pitch we saw during the fundraiser/Kickstarter.

Owned.

Companies are weird - with the price change I think it should either be:

  • "Hey guys, Inflation exists, price is up to $60, keep pledging!" - which they can do instantly, just update the page, and do a forum post or
  • "We're finally announcing the launch date! Now we're setting a full price for the game" - in which case I can see them holding that big announcement off for Citcon or some big advertising event.

But I think they'll be just bumping the price, but taking months to do it because they know it upsets both camps ;)

Man and all the building up the company in the UK. All the personnel hired. All the government incentives collected. So sad indeed to see it collapse like this. Hey, but at least some have profited, right? plays tiny violin
