Fix the Black Rhinoceros Neck

hopefully unlike the tapir we aren't too late this go around. According to Iben they read and look into these things, let's hope this one isn't one they ignore. I have a feeling they'll make some adjustments
I’m really hoping this is correct. How the Malayan tapir debacle has been handled the past couple years has been a tad bit disappointing

Let's go for another 2 year thread 😀 it's scary how similar this is to the malayan tapir requests

The Community reacted instantly to the Tapir too, but I guess it needs more than just a small Model Revamp to make it work, due to extensive tweaks needed for the Rig as well. On the other hand, Black Rhino issue seems to be solveable just by a Head/Neck Resize that'll make the Shoulders/Body look normal sized in comparison and a tweak to the ratio of Existing Animations played and maybe a new Animation or two. Much easier fixes than a whole Rig change. It could get the Dhole treatment.

I feel like it is the other way around tho. I honestly doubt that the Malayan Tapir would need its rig adjusted. Of course, I am not a developer, but the changes it needs (bigger trunk and a hump) does not seem that drastic. The Rhino on the other hand would need its head moved a bit, which could mess up some animations.

The thing with the Tapir is when you change the Hump and Posture, it affects the whole Skeletal. But with Rhino and Dhole its just the Head so only a very small portion of the Rig is affected in terms of Animations played. Either way I am no Game Developer either, but my experience with Wildlife and how they move tells me this makes more sense. I could be wrong though.

I have to say I find the black rhino very disappointing.

I was excited to see it and had a realistic enclosure ready but when I placed them in the zoo it was immediately apparent that they just aren’t right.

I really hope this can be fixed because at the moment they are up there with the Malayan tapir as a species which I just can’t use in its present form.

I’ve said it before but the Malayan tapir is less of a problem since it’s something the end user can fix using external files (though not ideal). In reality, there’s nothing that we can do on our end to remaster the Black Rhino’s head, which I believe would take precedent.

Of course, if Frontier is busy or have other plans, it’s fine I guess. The texture looks great which is what I was most concerned about, but it’d be a welcome fix for the future of the game. Either way, hope to see somebody fix it, lol

Hi, author of the Malayan tapir remaster mod here, I can confirm you are wrong. As Foxy said the tapir wouldn't really need any adjustments on the rig because the changes it requires on the model are minimal, and most importantly, are located in areas that are not critical for correct motion (unlike the eyes or the joints), so they don't impact the animations noticeably. For the rhino, however, a rig change is needed because it's a posture problem. Hope this brings some light!

In-game Southern White Rhinoceros and Black Rhinoceros and Black Rhinoceros sign (Planet Zoo Animal Sign Rhino) and Black Rhinoceros comparison. This tells pretty much that Black Rhinoceros need a fix.
Great examples, You can especially tell with the sign it is intended to hold its head higher in a neutrall pose, frontier knew this 3-4 years ago or at whatever point of development they made this sign.

The Malayan Tapir probably also needs adjustments to the Rig due to major differences in Body Shape and Posture. This might be why they didn't do it yet, which also applies to Black Rhino, so sadly there is a big chance both won't be fixed.
I wouldnt say that, The remasters work fantasticly and work in the animal, bringing it justice. the rig for the tapir works just fine, the model neded adjustments.
Its that images of modded animals isnt allowed or id happily show you.

Lets hope were early enough with this one? Itd be a shame since even mods cant fix this at the current time. Unlike the tapir.

Like Dhole, they tweaked Dhole's model and animation after SEA Pack release. Hopefully they will do the same for Black Rhinoceros
We can certainly hope so. I hope if everyone stay polite and keeps bringing it up they will.

Agreed, while not the ideal scenario, The tapir can be fixed with the remaster. The Black Rhinoceros cant.
Lets hope at somepoint it can get fixed. I do see a lot of support and people bringing it up, maybe we can see improvements this year still?

Thanks for the input Narwhaler. and I love your work on both remasters and new species.

Please, please, please fix the black rhino. I was extremely excited to finally get the black rhino for the game, but was instantly disappointed when I placed my first one in an exhibit. To me it truly looks like a white rhino body with a black rhino head. The other animals in the Arid pack are very well done, so I was expecting similar quality for the rhino. Black rhinos are more alert, agile and light on their feet compared to other rhino species. The head up posture is so important for this animal. And their bodies tend to have a more slim look than the white rhino and a less pronounced shoulder hump. And I would have probably given the female model a smaller set of horns just as a way to make the male and female look a little different. Please consider updating the black rhino. I will be extremely appreciative !

Thank you for your replies, but I'd have to try out the Mod myself to be able to say if it actually moves like a Malayan Tapir or not, or if it just looks more like one when not moving. Because the situation in our hands with the Official Malayan Tapir is both, so it also appears to be a Rig/Animation Problem, not just Cosmetic. A good example to this case is the Okapi, where the biggest problem reveals itself when the animal starts to move.

The Baird's Tapir above might be an Extreme Individual, but highlights the Skeletal/Posture/Proportional differences well, which are bound to affect the way each Tapir species moves.

These are more Average Individuals, but Skeletal and Posture differences are still very much apparent between South American and Malayan tapirs. To do justice to the animal a Complete Overhaul is needed in my opinion, even if Mods improve how it looks. Frontier might be having an all or nothing approach here, since mods already achieve the midway solution. People know more about Rhino differences than Tapirs, therefore it probably does not bother many when it comes to Tapirs and are happy with minor changes.

Editing the post to say the last sentence is probably also why Frontier took such a Gamble only with the Reskin Tapir.

I just want to let you know what at the end of the day, all tapirs walk and move very much the same. The Malayan tapir may have some minor differences in movement, but nowhere near as bad as the rhino.

The Tapir Remaster fixes this easily with the necessary texture and model updates that reflect a realistic individual. I think you're confusing rig = skeleton when it's more like rig ~ skeleton, of course their skeletons are different than that of their South American counterparts, but there is literally no issue with movement ingame for this species. It's mainly the body shape instead.

Looks like there is a neck-head posture issue with the two tapirs as well, not just body.

Maybe they’ll make a bug fix at some point regarding the black rhino, tapir, and maybe the okapi dhole or clouded leopard. (seen in another post) I really hope they fix it because they have been killing it on some of they’re more recent models. cough dromedary cough

I say try the remaster, Tapirs still move mostly the same, it might hold its head a little higher, but the bodyshape change really makes up for the animals movements.
sadly a remaster of the black rhino wont fix it as its issue stems mainly from animations, wich modders cant adjust just yet.

I know frontier cares about giving us the best animals, its really shown in how much care they put in each model, we can see how much the team has grown and improved and the care and detail they put in is outstanding, wich is also why its such a shame, the beautifull model is mostly just not accurate because of the animations.
a few minor things ive seen people note out such as the thickness of the neck or stomach and whatnot can be overlooked or even fixed with a remaster. but not the animations, the fast its posture is wrong for 90% being in a pose it might be in only 10% in real life is very sad and makes it look like a black rhino head slapped on a small white rhino.

So i really hope they will fix that, the reason people wanted a black rhino for so long is because it behaves and moves distinctly from other rhinos.
I know thats also why Malayan Tapirs were so wanted, because its diffrent from their american relatives.

The more I look at this model, the more it upsets me. This actually annoys me more than the Malayan Tapir, because the difference here is SO noticeable from any angle or distance. I really really hope this gets fixed.
Let’s not let this thread die!
