I think Frontier just goes for photogenic/cute animals. So that's why Wolverine, Tasmanian Devil, Baboon, Spectacled Bear, large birds and the like have been ignored up to now in favour of gazelles, sand cat for example which rank lower on the wishlist. They think they know better what animal would be well-received by the general playing public and unfortunately they might not be wrong.I really don’t think it’s a big deal. We all should know by now there always is an animal that is basically a “wildcard” no one asked for it that much, yet it still got in. Outside of ungulates, the Asian Water Monitor, Spectacled caiman, people weren’t even expecting the African Penguin in the Africa DLC.
And while these species weren’t asked for, they still got appreciated and enjoyable to play with once the community got their hands on them. The Nile Lechwe is an amazing animal, one I didn’t even know what it was, and now it’s my favourite of that pack with the Capy. Blue Wildebeest may have been overlooked, but it gives us a massive upgrade to the base game Wildebeest which looks way worse, same goes for the Dama Gazelle. I’m glad they don’t always give us what we want, it also maybe shows they plan stuff for the future. Give some of what we want in this pack, and save the rest for it next year (They could’ve put red River hog instead of Lechwe in wetlands, but saved it for tropical to get more attention). Plus it gives attention to lesser known species.
I’m just saying I don’t think they just pick a name out at random, there’s a logical reason why frontier gives us some species and not others.
But I too am tired of obscure clone animals making the DLCs, it might have been tolerable when the game was fresher/newer and more popular but there are less and less excuses now. Zoos in real life typically only have so many species of a particular type (like canids) since they want to show off animal diversity.
As for animals not wanted but later becoming more popular, you have to analyse it from a cost benefit perspective. We got say the Lechwe or the Dama Gazelle or the Spectacled Caiman, and many people use these animals compared to other ungulates, gazelle, or crocodile. But the benefit of using these animals instead of other clones is marginal compared to if we got a more unique animal: say the Tasmanian Devil or Manatee or even Blackbuck purely because it's an Asian ungulate.
