Game Discussions Star Citizen Discussion Thread v12

My dear LittleAnt, why would anyone seriously attempt running software with a stated 20Gb RAM minimum requirement when their platform has only 16Gb RAM?
That’s like planning on driving a thousand miles when you only have enough fuel to get to the end of the driveway.
The minimal requirement is 8Go of free ram, not 20Go.
I talk about 20Go because SC can use up to 20Go so need a pagefile correctly configured if you have less than 20Go of free ram. You find the same way of using memory in Flight Simulator and nobody is shocked.
But for sure, it works only fine when you don't mess up your pagefile and you have a SSD.

Imagine the hoops you'll need to jump through to get the game running when they bring all the new "starengine" improvements from the demo (pre-render?) to live.

But don't worry, it will probably never happen.

Duuuuude!

That's like taking 600M to not finish a game when you said you'd get it done for 65M. :ROFLMAO:

Pagefile is not solely used to extend memory.
That is its entire purpose.

Some programs use it for cache purpose (don't ask me how or why, I don't know).
Garbage programming. It'd not only be completely wrong to do this, but it's incredibly slow and will cause massive stuttering as resources get loaded back in synchronously through an avalanche of page faults on random threads.

CIG tried hard to promote their Star Engine at Citizencon 2023, yet showed nothing of the tools and backend. It's probably a lot worse to use as a developer than UE5.

Ay, and Cryengine is already fairly notorious on that front to start with.

Then add in the recent history of CIG tools being somewhat lambasted in post-mortems:

New Building Blocks styles are extremely time-consuming to implement due to a lack of tools and an inability to merge files. (source)
The procedural river placement tool was not in as good of a state as we had hoped when we started using it. As a consequence, a considerable amount of manual effort was required to meticulously place and verify the resulting rivers to ensure their optimal quality. Moreover, this limitation also led to a decrease in the number of rivers we were able to generate. (source)

And the general gossip of Rastar etc being similarly suspect. (Hey, it's probably a reskinned Cryengine tool after all ;)). And I wouldn't be surprised if we get similar reports there eventually. (Beyond the current it's breaking the shops stuff). Overall I'm not sure CIG are excelling in this area...

So even if CIG could finangle a way to license out 'Starengine' (IE cut some complex Crytek/Amazon deal with the rights holders to the core engine), I doubt it'd sell like hot-cakes. More pie in the sky from some backers ultimately ;)

Not to worry V. He's already given us his latest hot take :)
The reality of Sqn 404 being released isn't so bright unfortunately...an indefinite and as usual, undefined 'polishing' period (probably around an entire year from Ci~G's past efforts at similar distractions) followed by optimisation and a further finagling period of final polishing...let's not forget the incomplete and ultimately untested (from Yogi's comments during Citcon) flight model which has still to be added to their 'feature complete' game...

Q2 or Q3 2025 is my rough estimate.

As a marketing drive, Citcon did it's job, it gained the Empire of Roberts some much needed financial breathing space and development room but achieved little else bar offering more empty promises :)
