Game Discussions Star Citizen Discussion Thread v12

Mike is referring to Pyro as 'Red Stanton' because it feels much like Stanton - only with more red. It seems to be missing much the danger that was promised for Pyro (though it was nice to finally see the settlement from a couple of Citcons ago).

SC is also suffering from Mike having played SF I think - lots of running up to new things and being disappointed they are not interactive. e.g. "Oh, I found a drug lab, I'll just loot the drugs ... oh, they aren't interactive" (for all its downsides the loot spread everywhere in SF is quite fun)

I also found it a bit weird that Pyro I - with its 300C surface temperature - is seen from space as a blue planet with fluffy white clouds.

Other than the new assets it is the same old SC - getting caught in bed-logging loops, uncontrollable spins in ships, inability to interact with downed buddies, frame rates dropping to single figures if you get near buildings.

They do seem to have tweaked some things for the EPTU - all the ships have more fuel available (because Pyro is bigger? But the flight times seemed fast enough to me 🤷‍♀️ ), and they might have given ppl more health (one of Mike's bugs saw him think he was landed but actually he fell a few 100m to a planet - and was surprised to live. There was a long discussion about whether it was correct that a person with no armour can survive 10 head shots :) ) Also - bombs kill you if you are inside the buildings, so 'kill NPC' missions should be easy :sneaky:

I can see that making PvP "fun" as well. See someone run into a building? Drop a bomb outside and laugh as they die.

It's the no-bounties open-only instance "everybody" wanted. It will be interesting to see, how it plays out.
(Edit: indoor bomb blasts - it's that room system again?)

In a month of playtesting, I think I died more often to elevators, shuttles and ill-advised flight maneuvers in the dark (another lost tech: radar altimeters) than to player action. I'm not too salty yet.

That jitter... did they actually replicate cloth physics over the network? If so, that's impressively insane, even by CIG standards.
I don’t believe they can run the entire cloth sim on their server no- it’s interacting with server side stuff 3d data though yes; but there’s at least a mesh of 64x64=4096 3d points on that cloth, they struggle with 50 players and those npcs so yeah… an extra 4096 3d points to pass around… nah.
The cloth is struggling to interact with the server side data though, and cloth mechanics are renown for temporal dependancy - you need fast sampling to get smooth and non glitching movement. Although, I’m sure cig will get themselves a new cloth pipeline refactoring at some point that could use gpu ml crunching … one day!

Sad, but another backer bites the dust before SC releases

Someone dares to ask for non-beam gameplay

Someone complaining about PvP in Pyro (gotta admit here, its long been advertised as lawless and at least CIG didn't bait and switch people here)

Gushing about the new map and a few new missions..... really sad.

Someone really happy Pyro is a gankers paradise

But not all are impressed

More gushing praise and claims of stability which flies in the face of a ton of video evidence to the contrary

Reasonable words about mixing PvE and PvP

At its core, it's clear that making PvE and PvP players coexist in Star Citizen will be a tough nut to crack.

Its not as though developers haven't been struggling with this issue for decades and the simplest variant (which CIG of course will never do) is just to offer a way for PvPers and PvEers to play separately (modes, split servers, PvP slider... erm...)

And things not working in this 11 year old alpha

CIG is apparently putting EA and Activision to shame. To be fair, i don't think EA or Activision need any help in the shame department.

Latest Glassdoor.

TLDR: More QA & Networking resources plz. And fewer streamer devs...

Inconsistent at times and currently overwhelming.

Pros

-Majority of team members that I work with, as well as my supervisor, friendly and helpful. You will make great friends here in various areas of the company, -The projects you get to work on are amazing.

-Holidays.

-Internal promotions are more likely here than any other places I have worked at.

-Other reviews list HR as a con, but I don't have an issue with them apart from the con listed below.

Cons

-The hiring practices now seem very inconsistent, a clear example being that very inexperienced members are hired because they stream and their partner works here. This doesn't help the nepotism reputation that CIG has garnered.

- (This will probably ruin my anonymity) Adding on to the previous point, despite for the most part, having staff moving onto the same project now. It's still overwhelming, we still need more hands. I've raised this concern in the past but clearly it's ignored. A few of us in various areas feel this way, all working in different roles. So it's an issue in more than one area of the company. We do have a lot of staff, so maybe it's a management issue rather than a lack of staff issue?

- Very disorganised at times however this can be due to the actual project rather than the company. So I wouldn't hold this point against them.

Advice to Management

Can we please move more staff to assist various areas such as networking, QA and production. Or at least hire more people for these areas. If these cons don't change any time soon, you will lose some of us. I know I have been exploring other options for 6ish months now. As well as a few others.

We've been joking for years about so called senior devs looking like should still be in school

CIG actually has QA people? I thought they just relied on backers!
