Am I the only one who thinks this is weird...

I was flying over a planet and a small settlement on said planet, just flying past at a few hundred kph didnt think anything off it. Next thing I know is I get slapped with a 600Cr bounty not a fine which I would have thought appropriate but a bounty, so I think "ah ok better go and pay that maybe someone was short magazine money after all magazines in 330x must be about 600Cr each by now all things considered". When I get near the landing pad to pay off said imaginary fine im talking about a second from docking I am scanned then the entire place opens fire within a second my sidey is destroyed (not engineered just an exploration fun ship).

Now to recap, they gave me a 600Cr bounty for flying near a planet (must be a fun place for birds), then killed me mere milliseconds away from docking to pay said bounty. To top it all off its not good enough they killed me, I had to pay a 79k rebuy but now they have moved me over a few hundred light years away to a detention centre.

My question is why am I in a detention centre, did they pick up my bits from the wreckage and put me in prison. Wasnt killing me enough to 'erase' said bounty after all I had to pay the rebuy for my ship why cant I continue on my merry way. Surely im not the only one who considers this weird that you pay multiple times for one indiscretion of being with the birds?

So you got a bounty for just flying over a planet? Sure ;)
Are you positive it wasn't a trespass zone? Ive never picked up a fine i didn't deserve.

I was flying over really fast but a fine I would have understood but a bounty was excessive it's not as if I was shooting at anything or taking photos for a holiday album.

Could be a trespass zone - the numbers line up

Maybe the OP has been specializing in only flying really slow ships 🤷‍♀️ (I had to hang around a minute or so before they took offence to loitering:) )

Yeah, I'd bet my weekly Arx allowance this was a Horizons settlement. They really don't like it when you hang around and that landing pad is definitely not for you.

Also, anytime you get blown up where you're wanted or hand yourself in (or log back into the game at somewhere you're hostile to the controlling faction), you'll be sent to a detention centre. Can't remember this ever being different.

There was an old bug where there used to be mahoosive trespass zones. If one of those was still around and a player wasn't paying attention, you might get a bounty even flying quickly.

No fly zone on Horizons settlements are 3 clicks* and will incur bounties if staying too long; exploring with the SRV does not incur this penalty.
*from the center which gives a diameter of ~6km adding the settlement size.

The explosion you saw when you thought you died was the escape pod systems explosive bolts and ejection system firing off. So they just picked up your pod and posted it over to the detention centre where you where defrosted and decanted into the facility.

Just because a surface facility has a landing pad that doesn’t mean we are allowed to dock there no matter what our relationship with the faction that owns it.

I get the escape pod thing, I just don't get the bounty for flying fast over a mining installation. I always thought bounties came from not paying fines or killing people not instantly for flying in an area.

This zone did seem larger than normal so maybe that was it yet still an insta bounty was overkill a fine would have been sufficient.

They probably have those trespass zones there because the only reason to be there is illegal missions and also because it encourages you use the SRV to drive the rest of the way after landing outside the zone.

If I remember correctly it always used to be that I'd drive up to the settlement and the ship would be automatically be dismissed because of how far it was. If you were close enough to see clearly where the landing pad was, it doesn't seem like the trespass zone would be excessive. Although since I didn't see what was on screen I'll accept I could be wrong on that one.

I get where you're coming from with these though, it's a bit gamey to have horizons settlements and odyssey settlements and have them being completely separate purely because they came from different DLCs. Suppose it's something else for those hopes for the future.

Elite Dangerous is full of little quirks that make no sense, due to lazy game design or a lack of motivation to actually make the game make sense. The crime and punishment system is one of the things the community has been begging Frontier to fix from almost day 1.

Another example, go into a station, up to a terminal and look at the on-foot delivery missions. You might see several to the exact same planetary station/outpost. So you accept one, and at that moment, you are not allowed to take anything else to the same SYSTEM (not planet, the system). Makes no sense to me. I know it was changed to that because of people stacking missions, but I am sure my Amazon driver doesn't come from the warehouse with ONLY my package in his van, deliver to me and then drive all the way back to the warehouse for the next package.

Another one that makes no sense to me is, why does a gun cost more than a ship?

Come on Frontier, Elite Dangerous has/had so much potential, but you just CBA.

Considering how powerful they are in such small packages, that one makes sense to me. Waaay more sense than a handful of people deciding who runs a system. Unless you're one of those conspiracy people that think a handful of elites (heh :sneaky:) control the world I suppose.

They did a massive fix on it, Sandro Sammarco spent a lot of livestreams talking about it. That's what led to all the notoriety ranking, bounties on your "hot" modules, and other weirdness.

Another attempted fix would probably just make it even worse.

And detention centres were specifically a player suggestion [1] that they took on board, as a way of stopping people committing crimes in a system, paying off the bounty, and then immediately going out and committing more crimes in the same system.

But yes, the community asked from day 1 for C&P to be fixed, and then Frontier took all of their suggestions on board and implemented a system which did not have those perceived issues, and as a result from day 1169 the community has been asking for C&P to be fixed. So it's understandable that they haven't touched it again much since.

[1] Well, almost: the original frequent player suggestion was that people be sent to prison colonies, but as that's a government type which can be moved in or out of control by the BGS, the detention centres form a rather more stable positioning.

To stop gankers, was the main aim.
Really? I don't believe that. I believe FDEV understood crime as in "piracy" and looting civilians. I never had the impression they cared about ganking. Just like they never cared about balance after engineers anymore. I feel in their view the world size and modes would sort that out.
Instead they took particular effort to make the gameplay as tedious as possible. Why? To maximize player time online is my guess.
