The Golden Cult - GSNM appreaciation (adoration) thread

Critical monkey needs: SA (Tamarins, Howler, Spider monkey), Africa (Baboon, ~2 smaller ones: colobus and guenon), Asia (something from India)
Still kind of essential: Golden Snub Nosed Monkey, Squirrel Monkey, Barbary Macaque
My and community favorites: Red Shanked Douc (my favorite Old world monkey), Gelada, Coqueral's Sifaka
Nice to have: plenty of other species

Reasons why the GSNM doesn't quite reach the critical, limited-slots tier for me:
  • absence in zoos outside of East Asia
  • East Asia already has the Japanese Macaque

Reasons why I still view it as essential:
  • There is only one cold-weather, alpine monkey in the game right now.
  • They are one of China's (a large, megadiverse country) most iconic conservation species and locally a basic, well-known, and cherished animal.
  • They look distinct from other primates in the game. They come in a pretty golden color with a unique, blue face. I think they're kind of cute.
  • They are endangered.
  • They have a different behavior in that they walk on their hind legs to keep their hands warm.

At this point, I'll take any monkey going, but we already have one very distinct and unusual large Asian monkey that is very difficult to justify in the vast majority of builds and can't really pass for anything else - I'd rather have a couple more broadly useable species before we bring that total to two...

You can discuss all things Golden Snub Nosed Monkey here. Like, how great a pick for a Mountain pack it would be, how superior to gelada it is and how we should start a rebellion to make it happen.

Now some pictures.

Look at them babies :love::love:

How can anyone say no to those blue faces?
I will/would like those to be there as soon as what I wanted Planet Zoo to have to be in Planet Zoo.

Additionally people want a varied monkey selection in game and the golden snub-nosed monkey is different from all the other monkeys that are likely to make (possible exception being golden lion tamarin, purely because of colour)
This is frustratingly reductive. People don't just want a varied monkey selection, they want a realistic monkey selection. The golden snub-nosed monkey is an unfeasible choice for the overwhelming majority of realistic zoos. Maybe I'd be slightly less critical of it if we didn't already have one incredibly niche but flashy Asian odd-nosed monkey in the game, but at this point getting a second one of those is ironically going to make our monkey selection less varied than basically every monkey anyone discusses short of the barbary macaque.

There's not many species I wouldn't be willing to at least give a pass to, but the GSNM might be the top one that would actively get under my skin.

It’s not reductive, you’re just being picky. You are talking about a very specific group of player who only care about realistic zoos from their specific country and/or region. For them it matters. However, you don’t have to buy a dlc if you don’t want an animal in it.

Not everyone is one of those players and many just want to build zoos with fun animals. For them, the golden snub-nosed monkey is perfect. It’s brightly coloured, cute, exotic (for non-Chinese players) and recognisable (from shows like Planet Earth and His Dark Materials). Plus even if you are a realistic zoo builder, they are found in captivity in zoos in China.

You're underselling how prevalent this sort of player is, especially amongst those who have stuck it out with this game for four years.

However, you don’t have to buy a dlc if you don’t want an animal in it.
There won't be an endless amount of DLC. I would strongly prefer that what remaining DLC we do get offers as many agreeable animals and as few disagreeable animals as possible. Every animal that makes it in means one more won't make it in, particularly when it comes to similar species. If Frontier opts to de-prioritize basically any other popular monkey in favor of the GSNM, that's a massively disappointing waste of limited dev time and resources in my eyes.

To repeat: The golden snub-nosed monkey is an unfeasible choice for the overwhelming majority of realistic zoos.

To repeat: Western zoos, they are found in Chinese zoos. That’s your personal bias and not a real reason to exclude certain animals.

Similarly, you’re overstating how prevalent those sorts of players are. I like building realistic zoos but I sometimes want to build fantastical zoos. Plenty of animals can go in a pack for “realistic western zoos” alongside the golden snub-nosed monkey. Examples include: Spectacled bear,American black bear, European wildcat, North American porcupine, European bison, raccoon dog, takin, markhor, etc.

Again, you don’t have to spend money on a pack. A pack with popular animals will often have divisive animals. For example, the American black bear, is only found in 1 British zoo and is not an animal I’m keen on - especially for a realistic zoo. However, I understand that others want it and it’s important for them and that’s fair enough. I can choose not to buy that pack or save it for a fantastical zoo build, not act entitled

I allways love it when people act like anmals common in zoos are the plague, as if getting a baboon would be in any way shape or form be worse then that golden no nose monkey.
I dont care much at this point but the logic of something thats common in captivity + other reasons why they are desireable = everyone happy >>> rare/non existant in captivity + other reasons that 9,99/10 times are fullfilled equally or better by actual common in captivity animals = not everyone happy

I always love it when people are passive aggressive and act like their opinion is the only valid one for no reason. Especially since wishlists are based purely on personal wants and desires. Some people want realism, others don’t care. People are perfectly entitled to want whatever monkey(s) they want (including no monkey(s))!

Isn’t that what realistic zoo players think about saiga, proboscis, shoebill, and leopard seals!? They see these as plague and worse

I don’t care if an animal isn’t found in captivity as long as it’s interesting, and the GSNM is neither in captivity nor is it interesting. It looks like a slightly different proboscis monkey to me. Or at least it fills the same role in game, plus its ANOTHER Asian primate, along with Lar gibbon, siamang and proboscis monkey.
Gelada > Howler Monkey > Aye-Aye >>> GSNM >>>> Baboon
For once I agree except slide Spider Monkey in between gelada and howler and we good 😁

How much more ignorant can you a actually get?
Who are you to decide which species are interesting and which are not?
Maybe you should take a rest from the forums if they frustrate you so much?
