Eurasia Animal Pack, Retrospective

The new pack has been out for a month now, and since these threads have become a little tradtition, i though we should take a look back.

So how are you feeling about the pack now? Did it grow on you after not liking it at first? Did it dissapoint you after getting your hands on it? Or is it just as amazing as you thought at first?

I am content with this new dlc
I’m still adding animals as some zoos were unplayable due to the bug
I have use for a lot of the animals, glad for the representation for animal families and locations that were in need of attention
Here’s my thoughts on the animals
Wolverines: highly wanted them, using them in my NA, EU and Asian zoos. May add them to my old world and new world zoos. Should have been flagship animal.
Wisents: good addition, there is a spot in my EU zoo that needed filling and they certainly got that spot. May use them in my old world zoo.
Takin: another good addition, got a herd going in my Asian zoo and plan to get a herd in my Indian zoo.
Mute swan: a welcome surprise that can lead to water birds in the future. Use them in my EU, Asia and NA zoos. Having fun making attractive ponds for them matching the theme of the zoos.
Hermanno Tortoise: i was hoping for a turtle to be added ever since the terrapin, this was a nice surprise. My reptile exclusive zoo has a section for the tortoise and turtles and I had hoped to get a new member in at some point.
Sloth bear: I like bears, wanted new world bears before the sloth bears. Feels out of place being an Eurasia dlc and I thought would be a good headliner for an Indian animal dlc. I am still waiting to get a good pair for my Bear zoo and I got 2 for my Indian zoo.
Saiga: not a big fan and not a big fan of having animals nearly never found in captivity. I added some to share habitat with my Asian zoos P horses, I still can’t get over the size difference and currently getting a herd to share with my EU zoos Wisents.
Wild boar: I personally find them in real life to be terrifying after seeing them in Maui do some things I dare not say. Still adding a group to my EU, India, Asia and my NA zoo.

In conclusion
I am glad colder climate animals got attention. I have found plenty of work to do making new habitats and bringing to life empty habitats that I knew would one day be filled. I would have preferred a Pallas cat or a golden jackal as opposed to the Saiga but let us see what 24 has to offer us

Opinion is still pretty much the same, its a good animal pack. I won't call it a great animal pack because of several shortfalls mainly due to the scale of trying to represent diverse eurasia with so few animals - the tropical pack fell into the same trap which faired even worse considering it was a scenery pack. So eurasia can be considered europe v2 covering all the realistic needs that the europe pack failed to address. Animals like the wolverine, wisent and mute swan are great additions to europe and will really help those building european zoos to have a fully fledged zoo without the excessive use of substitute animals.

The rest of the pack which represents the asia portion of eurasia feels half baked honestly. Not in animal quality of course but it feels that the takin, saiga and sloth bear were added due to popular demand and positions on the meta wishlist. We could of had a second himalayan animal like the pallas cat or even the markhor , or even switched focus to east Asia to include dire needs for deer like the pere david deer. The sloth bear, as great as it is, should of been kept for a south asia/India pack as one of the headliners there, here it feels like an extra to get as much range as possible to represent eurasia in one go.

The only thing that has changed for me is my opinion on the saiga. Originally didn't want it cause of captivity status but its an interesting creature itself and after seeing how much work they put into the snoot, I like them. Plus they are absolutely gorgoeous to take pictures of.

The Sloth Bear I didn't care for one bit at reveal, and I still don't care for it at all. Wouldn't miss it if it didn't make it in, sure it looks great, but I have no use for it and I think it should've been the Pallas Cat or some other cold climate asian animal like they could've gone the extra mile and had the golden pheasant on the peafowl rig, would've made this pack a 10/10 but because it has an animal I don't think I will ever use, its an 8 or 9.

Everything else is awesome, love the Wolverine, Swan, Wisent, Boar and Takin. Tortoise I dont really care about but I never really think about exhibit animals until I build a reptile house or something.

Short answer: Its a neat pack in my eyes, there are some things i really like about the pack, but there were also some choices where id really would have put something else.

My reasoning:
What i like:

  • The animal quality is absolutely stunning
  • I like that it gave europe some big love by providing its last big missing pieces in form of the boar, wisent, a waterfowl and to a lesser degree the wolverine.
  • I also approve that it tried to also provide something for the non euroean players for whom this pack seems mostly geared towards.
  • The pack does a decent job at giving something to most areas of eurasia with the wolverine for the north, wisent for central europe, takin for the himalayas, saiga for central asia, sloth bear for india and the tortoise for the mediterranean and middle east. Aswell as the boar and to a lesser degree the swan for pretty much the entire eurasia. The only places that went empty handed are SEA, which is okay since it really got alot of love in previous packs, and eastern asia which is a bummer.
  • Obviously the inclusion of the swan as our first waterfowl is a immense W.

What could be better in my eyes:
  • I think that some of the animal choice arent really the ideal ones. The saiga for example, while i dont mind the uber rare in captivity thing in a vacuum, i think that similar to the proboscis monkey it kinda sucks that our only option for a asian antelope is one that is pretty much absent in zoos.
  • The sloth bear as our indian representative also really isnt the best choice imo. I think most people can agree that indias main shortcomings are the lack of a monkey and some kind of filler ungulate like a antelope or deer
  • Similar to the arid pack im not to fond of these ungulate heavy packs, even tho i like all the picks in a vacuum i wish they made one of them something else.

Animals:
Wolverine:
Highly requested animal, glad its here
Swan: A waterfowl was 100% percent my most wanted animal so im really happy with it. Although i would be lying when i say i wouldnt have prefered the mandarin duck over it.
Takin: Also highly requested animal especially in the last year. One of the few missing ungulates i really wanted
Wild boar: Also one of the last ungulates i really wanted. Admittedly i was a little sad when the anniversary animal turned out to be the peccary, so im glad we got it here.
Wisent: Icon for both europe and a great conseration story, not something i was really desperate for but i like it.
Bear: This is the biggest missed potential for me. So many more desirable alternatives for me. Incredibly made tho.
Saiga: An animal i have no strong feeling about in either direction.
Tortoise: This one im the most split about. On the one hand i really like that we got a new type of exhibit animal and i like this one especially. On the other hand it being an exhibit animal really is a disservice to it since tortoises are pretty active animals and move around alot, also they are usually kept in outdoor pens and as someone who is very familiar with them in real life due to them being pretty common pets in germany, seeing them in a terrarium just feels wrong to me. This made my desire for a exhibit null option even bigger than it was before. Small nitpick but imo they are a little to vibrantly colored, as they get older they arent this yellow anymore

Wisent - Doesn’t do anything for me as it’s pretty much useless outside of Eurasia, but I’m always for regions getting their most essential animals and this is Europe’s flagship. It would be like having Australia without a kangaroo or NZ without a kiwi. A great addition to the game’s overall roster and I’m happy it’s in.

Wolverine - One of the few community favorite animals that I’d legitimately consider overrated. Just because I think it’s overrated though doesn’t mean I think it’s a bad addition - it has a very wide range and is relatively unique. On top of that it’s gorgeously made and very fun to build for. Was it essential as many have touted? Personally, I don’t think so, but I still love it and it’s a wonderful addition within its range.

Wild Boar - Where I’m from these are an incredibly destructive invasive species, and I’ve never seen them in a zoo. That being said, their native range is ridiculously huge and they’re very common in zoos within that range. A great addition to the overall game even if it’s not for me.

Takin - I like it, but I have no strong feelings or thoughts on it. It’s just one of those animals that’s a nice addition, and one I’ll use, but isn’t particularly memorable for me (which isn’t necessarily a bad thing, not every species needs to be an absolute must-have favorite).

Mute Swan - Out first waterfowl and hopefully not our last (please). By far the best animal in this pack and one of the best in the game overall. It’ll get knocked down a lot if we get a few more common waterfowl species, but the fact that we finally have this rig at all now is a huge deal.

Sloth Bear - For what it is, I love it. It’s amazingly made and a solid addition on its own. As an addition to the game’s roster overall though, another bear would have been far from my first choice, especially considering the potential inclusions for a pack with this theme (monkey, pheasant, duck, indian antelope, etc.)

Saiga - The most unneeded ungulate in an already ungulate heavy pack. I’ve said my thoughts on it elsewhere, but to sum things up it’s not essential for anywhere, rare within its own region, does poorly in captivity, etc. I have nothing against it, but that’s not exactly a good set of qualities for a zoo game. Swapping it for an Indian monkey species, a blackbuck (another ungulate yes, but at least it’s a worthwhile one), or another bird would have instantly improved this pack by a lot for me. I still like to look at animals for what they are rather than what they aren’t though, and it at least looks amazing. I’ll probably use it at least once just for the sake of doing so - even if it is just a one off build - but I won’t lie and say that I think it was the best choice.

Hermann’s Tortoise - Haven’t really checked it out yet, but from what I’ve seen it’s cute. It’s a nice, unique exhibit animal and I don’t have too many thoughts on it. Though after hearing the critiques of it as an exhibit animal it feels like a missed opportunity. A small habitat tortoise would be amazing.

Overall, it’s too ungulate heavy for me, but I can at least appreciate the wisent, boar, and maybe the takin to a lesser extent(?) being essential for certain regions.

My thoughts still remain the same as they were on announcement, in that the swan heavily carries this pack for me (although my thoughts changed drastically after the announcement, as hinting at two carnivorans and two ungulates during the livestream wasn’t exactly very promising). Sad that this many ungulates in one year is nothing surprising but 3 birds or even one monkey is an achievement, and I hope Frontier notices such critiques from the community going forward. I’m not saying I don’t like these ungulates - they’re mostly good (and probably easy to make) additions and it’s great to have variety for such a common group, but it doesn’t change the fact that we won’t get animals forever and the primate/terrestrial bird roster still hasn’t even scratched the surface of what’s essential. Priorities have to be taken.

Also seriously how has the peafowl rig still not been reused? A pheasant would’ve been perfect for this pack and I’d switch the sloth bear or especially the saiga for one in a heartbeat.

TLDR: Not the best for my personal wants, although mostly decent for the games overall roster. A few flawed animal picks keep it from being great though.

I think this pack is one of the best packs in planet zoo. I was hoping for a tundra pack personally but this has been a very well put together pack imo. The sloth bear admittedly seems out of place but still happy to have them. As of now I’ve only used the wild boar and Herman’s tortoise in my current zoo. It is a little strange using European animals because I’m from America and usually like most build zoos reflecting that. As far as the animals go
1) Wisent- definitely very much needed in terms of European animals and conservation status. Also a very nice alternative to the American bison.
2) Takin- a nice addition I personally still would have preferred the Muskox personally but great to have them in game.
3) Sloth bear- like I said a little out of place imo but so glad we got it. Definitely one of the best animals frontier has designed to date and a nice rare option for our zoos.
4) Mute swan- definitely the best animal of the pack and a great addition to the game. Perfect for that starter exhibit.
5) Wolverine- looks nice and very heavily requested. Not a animal known for doing well in captivity as they do like to roam miles every day which is normal for them but nice nonetheless.
6) Saiga- mixed feelings on this one since they aren’t really in captivity. But they are wonderfully done and make for quite a unique inclusion.
7) Wild boar- recently used these guys and they are pretty neat to use imo. Was hoping they’d get the anniversary pick but worked out in the end. Now we have wild boars and peccaries the best of both worlds.
8) Herman’s tortoise- I’ve used them and it’s not that their bad by no means but definitely preferred a cobra or retic in comparison.

I'm really happy with this pack, even though I haven't played much since release.

I've used all habitat animals except the Takin so far, and plan to use the Takin soon. The Wolverine's gone in 5 or 6 of my zoos already and was easily the highllight of the pack for me. The Wild Boar, Wisent and Swan are getting some good use as well, around 3 of my zoos have them, though not all the same zoos have both. Have used the Sloth Bear and Saiga once so far.

The pack really filled a lot of spaces for me. The Wild Boar, Swan and Wolverine were all in my top 10 wants at the time so I'm super thrilled we got them all. It also took care of the last truly essential European, Asian and North American mammals I'd want.

Sloth Bear was still my least favorite of the pack but I still like it quite a bit. Weird I've used that but not the Takin as yet. There are no bad animals in this pack IMO though, and am quite content with 5 of the 6 "main" continents mammal rosters now. Sure there's more that I'd like to see from them, but this pack really filled out Asia and Europe for me.

My only criticism, even though I like the roster, is that it was a bit ungulate heavy, which combined with the Arid pack made for a very ungulate heavy year. Unlike the Arid pack though, I'm actually glad we got all of the Eurasian ungulates.

I like this pack, but it isn't one of my favorites. As I've been saying since the Europe pack, the game mostly needs monkeys, birds, and better SA representation. I keep hoping for something centered around those three, and I can't help feeling a little dissappointed when the packs are something else.

As a NA player, I don't think I was the intended audience, though ironically, my two most underrated picks for Europe, the mute swan and the wisent, both made it in. It does a good job fleshing out Europe, and I agree that the realistic needs for European zoo rep seem to be met. Maybe there'll be room for a small carnivore or a couple of birds down the road, but the European roster seems very strong at this point. South and East Asia are still hurting a bit.

Thoughts on the individual animals:
  • Mute Swan (10/10): This was one of my top bird picks. Waterfowl are such an essential part of zoos and add life to ponds. Swans are bigger than ducks, so we don't have to worry about finding teeny ducklings roaming freely in a giant pond. Although I see more black swans in accreditied zoos, the mute swan is the swan most people think of, and they are a major icon of European wildlife. They seem like a better starting point. Now I'm waiting for black swans, ducks, and maybe pelicans. I hope they make it in, too.
  • Wolverine (10/10): These iconic mustelids have a huge range and finish off the northern hemisphere taiga nicely. They were popular for a reason. No complaints.
  • Hermann's Tortoise: (9/10) It's not a bird, but Europe really needed another exhibit critter, woodland tortoises are adorable, and it matches the colors of the salamander. I was rooting for this one.
  • Takin (7/10): They are a unique goat, and the Himalayas and East Asia really need ungulates. Takin are decently common in zoos. The markhor is my favorite, though.
  • Wisent (7/10): I did a 180 on this one. The American bison and beaver are the national mammals of the US and Canada, keystone species of their native regions, storied conservation icons (both were brought back from the brink through great effort), species of tremendous cultural significance (they shaped a lot of events), and the top two animals that should be added to represent the continent. I would never trade the wisent for the American bison, and although I'm sure it is iconic and important among European animals, I do not see it as a "flagship" even to the level of the lynx, swan, ibex, and fallow deer for zoo rep. It was a difficult animal for me to root for at first. Then, I tried building a temperate/European zoo, and I realized I wanted one. The plains bison had different habitat requirements and social group needs that made it stick out as a substitute. Also, wisent are an important conservation species and add a uniquely sized creature for temperate sections. I looked a bit closer and realized the two are also visually distinct enough. It seemed like enough Euopean players really wanted it, too. While I wasn't voting for it specifically, I do think the wisent is a great addition, and I'm happy for the players that needed it. It was deeply underrated, and I'm glad it's getting love here. They really do add something special and different to the region.
  • Sloth Bear (6/10): While completing all of the bear species is an important objective for a roster of this size, and sloth bears are kind of unique, a sixth Asian bear was not as important to me as the spectacled or the colorful ABB (probably my favorite NA animal tied with the prairie dog, but as I said, the beaver and bison are more important). I will be dissapointed if this is the last bear we get, and I was hoping it would add to a South Asia animal pack featuring the more-needed blackbuck and monkey. Still, it's good to have. Adding a tropical species does give some variety when building for the animals of this pack.
  • Saiga (6/10): It looks like a Dr. Suess animal. I like them, but I didn't really see them as essential. I kind of see them as Europe/West Asia's pronghorn--a non-essential, but very fun oddball pick. There might have been better options out there, but it's not bad, and there isn't a better substitute. Their shyness makes them both a bit of a pain.
  • Wild Boar (3/10): I don't like this animal, personally. It's saving graces are its extensive native range in colder climates and especially its interspecies enrichment. I can throw them in with some other European ungulates and make a very nice European forest exhibit.
Still Missing from Eurasia:
  • Europe: great white pelican
  • East Asia: Mandarin duck and pheasants, muntjac, raccoon dog, GSNM
  • South Asia: blackbuck and/or nilgai, at least one monkey
  • Himalayas: markhor, Pallas's cat
All in all, it's not bad. I can build a great European section now, which is nice.

As a scandinavian person this dlc finally enabled those of us who'd like to make zoos close to home. A 10/10 pack for me, only thing that could've made it better is a pallas cat just cause I want more mongolian animals in the game.

Alright!

Wisent/Wild Boar/Saiga- Personally, I won't really use them, but the models look great! I know that the wisent and wild boar are essential for a lot of the European player base, so I'm y'all got them. However, I think most of us agree the saiga is a weird choice.

Wolverine- Solid choice! Been highly requested and they look great. Would have preferred them in a hypothetical Tundra Pack to make room for some East Asian species, but they are still a nice addition

Sloth Bear- My second favorite animal of the pack! I still am blown away by how amazing they look! They were such a pleasant surprise and complimented the bear roster so nicely. Now all I need is the spectacled bear and I'm set in the bear department!

Takin- My favorite animal in the pack! I love hoofstock and these unique guys will be in almost all of my zoos now. So stoked they made it into the game!

Mute Swan- Hot take in coming! The swan's alright. Definitely an outstanding animal, but it's just not that interesting to me.

This pack still is far from my favorite with the sloth bear and takin being the two animals that really get me excited and inspired. Oh, and the tortoise is great too! Excellent pick! I feel like a langur/macaque really could have elevated this pack with some more diversity.

Who would you replace for the cat?

Saiga. It looks great, sure, but I don't have a thing for antelopes. I never use the other ones in game either. But I would be sad for Pentoleaf...
I could live without the Wolverine as well, but then the wrath of the whole community would come over me and tear me apart, only to feed my individual parts to ....Wolverines.

After a month, I'm still super excited about the animals from this pack. I'm especially enjoying the swans, and I keep them in nearly all my zoos now :D
Wisents are fantastic! I just feel slightly sad for American bison; they don't look good enough next to wisents. I used to like Bisons a lot, but the models seem so outdated right now.
Wolverines are as cool as they can be. And I'm over the moon with Takins! Every time I open the game, I'm excited to see these creatures in my zoos :D
I still need to build for the sloth bears and also for the saigas one day.

My only suggestion for this pack is that the animals' needs should be updated. As mentioned before, some species should be less tolerant to hot weather (Takin) and more tolerant to cold temperatures (Saiga).

The swan is the only reason I bought this pack. Now it leaves the question where they will put the markhor and the pallas cat.
Mountain pack with spectacled bear OR gelada/Golden snub nosed monkey and some random choice no one asked for.

I agree about the Null Barrier Option but 16 Square Metres is about the size of a small garden so I think it is fine for a small species of tortoise like Hermann's, Egyptian or Pancake. I'd say Greek is probably the limit. I've seen such tortoises in much smaller terrariums in zoos. Realistically the species is too small to be Habitat in the game. Its babies would be impossible to pull off with the way habitats work. Look how small the adults are compared to Baby Aldabra and Galapagos Giant Tortoises and Fruit! By the way, yes Hermann's Tortoises are small, but either the ones in the game are a bit too small or the fruit too big!

As for the colour, you are right, they tend to get duller with age like many reptiles but it also depends on Regional/Individual Variation and Dust. Here's a selection of examples from various ages showing dull and vibrant colours.
