No Single Player offline Mode then?

No that's incorrect, it's shooting for an early 2015 release. Too bad it can't be ordered yet though, but that's Josh (a young man dripping with integrity) for you. Worth saving the link though - and checking out the youtube videos / development "updates".
Oops! My bad will revisit, still getting over an early morning Skype session with my son who lives in Ottowa YAWWWWWWWWWWWWNNNNNNN :) - wish there was a bleary eyed smiley.

Again FD should have thought about this before spitting in the face of their supporters and then refusing to issue refunds. Do I believe it would be classless for people to make issues there YES but it is no less classless what FD is doing right now!!!! With the back to the wall approach you NEVER know what peeps will do!

And not all of them care about offline mode.

Even if they had polled (and my understanding as KS backer was that there was no obligation in their part to ask for my opinion), the majority might still have come down on the side of ditching the offline mode in favour of game depth and complexity --as indeed they appear to have done. So it wouldn't have changed anything.

I think that you are morally entitled to a refund, but sadly that's all you're entitled to.

I think it would be disingenuous if anyone did disrupt the premier. It's fair enough that they have a gripe against Frontier, but there will be many people there who do not and who have looked forward to the event. It is not their fault that the project will not deliver to expectations for some. I sincerely hope that common decency prevails and that anyone with an axe to grind does it without disrupting those that do not.

Being a fan of all things Space Sim like (probably trying to recapture those moments playing Elite as a child) as well as backing ED and Star Citizen, I backed Limit Theory, not by nearly as much as the other two, but still be a fair wedge. I have been receiving and loving his monthly developmental videos over the year and the project just looks better by the day. It's very Freelancer like, which is not a bad think as I loved Freelancer, I just hope its not going to fail in comparison too it though.

The one problem I have with LT are the ships, he has mentioned that they will be getting an overhaul so hopefully my concerns are unfounded.

Anyway sorry to derail the thread, you may all proceed, sky falling down etc

LT was my "wildcard" punt, as it took funding at around the same time as E: D and SC.

I really wish I'd put more into it than E: D but I trusted David Braben to deliver over an unknown. You live and learn.

Josh Parnell has shown himself to be a very impressive & talented young man, and I'm now looking forward to his game far more than I was previously. Before Friday I wasn't sure if I'd even have time to play it with Elite coming out. What a difference a few days makes.

The development updates (on youtube) are well worth a watch. Also his daily dev logs on the forums. This is how you communicate with backers. Take heed Frontier!

I am just here to voice my displeasure at this turn of events.

I'm not interested in playing DayZ in Space

only bought the game for the offline version...demanding a refund.

You can still play solo, just need an online connection from time to time to sync up to.
You will never see another player.

It's actually not that far off launch, and it's really good.
I suggest going on youtube and checking out his awesome development videos, there are hours worth of them and they make for some good viewing.
I think if your looking to replicate your Elite days (something i've spent 30 years trying to do!) then you will be disappointed, however if you loved Freelancer (and what's wrong with you if you didnt! PS it's still very playable and graphically still looks beautiful if you hold those things in high regard) you will love this.
I backed it during KS and would highly recommend at very least spending a short time looking at it, It may be the offline answer to your woes
Thx Broadie yes I loved Freelancer and played it through a number of times so its an option I'll certainly explore.

I dont think the sky is falling down.

we are 100K players.. and a small fraction is on the forums, and a small fraction of those is angry anmd a small fraction of those want a refund and a small fraction of those actually get a refund...

There was AMA interview with David Braben on Reddit: http://www.reddit.com/r/IAmA/comments/15od2s/i_am_david_braben_cocreator_of_elite_creator_of/

Here are some quotes from there:

Q: After numerous mishaps and false starts, I have grown extremely averse to multiplayer as a whole, outside of a private LAN. In my current situation, such LAN parties are out of the question, unless it's Starcraft... which I detest. I realize that Multiplayer is a big financial incentive, but do you intend to apply the same amount of effort and energy into the Singleplayer experience?

A: (David Braben, Dec 31 2012) A hard one to answer. Almost all of the game world work applies to both single and multiplayer. Exploration is very nearly a single player experience, though much of the fun comes from the fact of the multiplayer world. We do not see these as separate experiences.

Q: Will the evolving universe that Elite: Dangerous is set in make it less enjoyable to play in say 20 years time? As minable resources become more scarce and inflation makes it harder for newcomers to the game. Or will there to be a static non-evolving universe for the single-player mode that will live on?

A: (Michael Brookes, Dec 30 2012) Space is big :) Most of the galaxy is unexplored when the game begins and there are plenty of resources to be discovered. There will also be an offline single player mode.

Q: I still play the original Elite on my laptop on the way to work. Will I be able to play 'Elite: Dangerous' in a single player mode without any connection to the net? Thanks.

A: (David Braben, Dec 30 2012) Yes, though you will lose the richness of multiplayer.

I cut'n pasted the same text amongst others when i reported Frontier to Kickstarter. It probably won't provide any pressure at all, but might help Kickstarter prevent companies deliberately misleading the backers with false promises - like in this case.

I agree that communication has been poor. Apology should have been more emphatic, and I think Alphas and Betas should be offered refunds.

Everybody who feels this is not the game they have backed anymore should get the refund. that woul'd also benefit the FDs as they'll be known as a honest and friendly company that treats their (dissappointed) customers well.

I alreqady told him this.

I am wondering how many people confuse no-offline with no single player?

quite an amount I suppose.

Speaking of video updates he hasn't made a video since July... I'm looking forward to this game As well as infinity quest for earth. But consistant updates are a big deal to me. Infinity has been in the works for almost 10 years. They were supoose to go to kickstarter BEFORE elite even did... their STILL working on getting there kickstarter together. I've almost lost all faith in them making anything this lifetime, still looks great though

https://www.inovaestudios.com/

Worry not, he has not updated his page with the latest updates is all, the last update I received from him (with a dev video) was dated October.

Ok after doing the math so far.....Individually there are 1054 individual posters on this thread.....
Assuming they are all unhappy ( although they are not all )

That would be 1054 unhappy backers against 24,000 happy ones.....Big thread but not really so many people

play single player then?

Please go back and reread the last 500 post if you feel the need to add anything to this discussion !

so why are you all so angry and nervous about minor fraction of backers that do not want to harm neither you or FDs?

Let's clarify then shall we? offline = no connection required to play and no DRM.
Single player = You can play by yourself, BUT....are still tied to, and influenced by, all the other stuff going on in the "cloud" world.

I dunno about you, but when someone tells me I can play single player, I think that means I am the ONLY person interacting with the game world. Is your definition different?

That would be 1054 unhappy backers against 24,000 happy ones.....Big thread but not really so many people

Because many out there know about "offline" being taken away. Wait for 16th December when requests get in on how to enable the "offline-mode". This thread may be getting even bigger.

He's probably due another one, but I assume you missed the last one on the 6th October.

Give the guy a break though. He's doing it all single handed, and basically been working 7 days a week, 12+ hours a day on this, with only a couple of weeks off last August. I think he's doing an amazing job with the updates all things considered.

Anyway, yes, back to WW3 and the four horsemen...
