Odyssey VR specific bug reports - please contribute!

New issue report - https://issues.frontierstore.net/issue-detail/65233 - though it’s questionable as to whether it’s a VR problem; looks to me like the CMDR accidentally turned settings up too high which caused massive lag and then managed to accidentally delete their character while pressing buttons/keys while not being able to see the results.

It’s got VR in the title though, so I’m adding it! Hopefully the CMDR gets their CMDR back though that should be done through Support, not Issue Tracker.

There’s an “issue cannot be loaded” report that has the title:

Type-8 outfitting and livery views are all messed up in VR

…and it’s not something that I can check - are there any VR users playing with the new ship who can expand upon this report?

I'll take a look later to confirm if I get the time, but I didn't notice any issues when I got it. I'm pretty sure I was in VR at the time ...

Just did a test with the VR view points using a Q3 on the T8 outfitting.
When first entering outfitting your ship is behind your left sholder, ie looking away from the front left of the ship. This is the same view you get when outfitting both Core & Optional Modules. When outfitting Utilities & Hardpoints the VR view is correct, ie you are looking at the module position on the ship.

I can confirm hangar views of the Type-8 are messed up. It starts with the main menu/loading screen. The camera/scale is WAY too close and the ship towers over your PoV. It looks way bigger than a Corvette or Cutter does.

When you drop into outfitting, you are presented with a lovely view of the.... wall lol. Seriously, the Type-8 is behind you somewhere and you're facing the hangar wall. Trying out liveries or ship kits to buy? Well use your imagination because you can't see your ship at all.

PS: also, the new fat, fuzzy orbital lines look like cheddar cheese covered deep-fried onion rings. Much rather have aliasing than how they look now.

I've spent most of my ARX on a Type 8 so I could check this out - and I've now submitted an issue report as I'm seeing the same problem. A similar thing happened with the Scorpion when that was released.

Someone at FDev Towers should really make the effort to dust off the company DK2 and actually test the new content in VR before releasing it into the wild 😬

And it would be sooo easy. You are the VR SME here, and not to offend anyone back at HQ but I bet you know more about ED on VR than they do.

Pick a few other key players from each of combat, exploration, mining, AX, trading, etc and let them in for a few days into the test server they use for the creators / partners. Players using their real setup and actually playing the game vs some scripted lab test machine. Free workers and happy to do so as their game would improve. I'd sign an NDA and join the test group in an instant.

Elite Dangerous is easily my most played VR game since getting my first HMD in 2017 but I’ve hardly touched it since the flickering shadows appeared in October 2022 - and I dearly wish to play a bug-free ED. I’d happily participate in NDA’d beta builds if it would help the VR game - checking for issues is what my gameplay is at the moment anyway, just post-patch release 😁

Interestingly, RE: flickering shadows ...
I reduced my model draw distance a notch to see if it would have any effect on performance (a little ... maybe?) and forgot to change it back. That was almost 3 weeks ago and whilst I've seen shadows "drawn in" as I move closer I've not seen many if any flickering shadows that I can recall in that time period. Just thought about it now as I read the above posts. I don't think I've changed anything else ... you've probably tried everything, but just in case, thought I'd post.

I said it once, and I'll say it again: one of the many issues I have with this game is Frontier's decision to monetize what should be a player-testing environment, treating it like marketable commodity or advertizement rather than valuable development tool it should be. I know some people like to say "It should be Frontier's job to do QA," but there's only a very slim chance that Frontier has my particular combination of hardware, drivers, and software to ensure that there's no issues with my rig. I actually lucked out with Odyssey's release due to the fact that my ten year old rig at the time just happened to have the exact same hardware as David Braben's rig, and thus didn't experience most of the issues others were having at the time of release.

The flickering shadows is a tricksy beast 😁

Long space stations or planets with the local star low on the horizon are the best places to check the issue - it looks to me like only certain shadow distances are the problem, and the behaviour is either strobing like it’s a 90’s rave or switched off completely until you get close enough for the next shadow quality level to kick in.

I’ve tried altering the draw distance but it doesn’t seem to alter the issue for me, but that’s great if it’s alleviating the problem for you 👍

Well they definitely have the DK1 as evidenced by this video back in the day when they were still excited about VR :(

Gotta love some of the report entries: "I am also seeing the same thing, not seeing the Type-8 in outfitting or livery. Workaround is turn your head 180 degrees like an owl" lol.

Hopefully everyone's voting on it. This is a revenue-generating product so here's to FDev fixing it asap.

A couple of new issue reports, this one which I hope is a simple user fix:

https://issues.frontierstore.net/issue-detail/66588 - No audio in VR

…and this one regarding orbit lines which I’ve just submitted:

https://issues.frontierstore.net/issue-detail/66591 - VR orbit lines only in left eye when near planets

Since today’s update the orbit lines toggle works correctly but once you get close to a planet they switch off in the right eye. Hurray for stereo mismatch headaches! 😅

The Type 8 Outfitting and Livery bug is now fixed which is good to see 👍

Also, shadow behaviour may have changed for me - I’m not seeing much flickering but instead shadows are entirely absent at the distances where they used to flicker. I need to do more checks, especially with planet shadows at the terminator area.
