The Mandalay - A lovely ship, but...

I have to say that this ship is pretty much the perfect ship, for me. Beautiful to look at (especially with the ship kit) and the stats and handling are spot on. Bravo to all involved. However, if there's one single area of its design that irks me, it's the thruster sounds.

First off, the boost sound is almost offensively loud. I cringe every time I hit the afterburner. Does it really need to be that loud? In that respect, it kind of reminds me of the AspX thruster sounds which had to be toned down due to being way too loud. A 20-30% reduction in volume would be a definite improvement here. Maybe a tad more...

Secondly, the thruster sound when you throttle up or down. Initially, it doesn't seem too bad, and if you're not changing engine power a lot you'd probably think this an irrelevance. But if your performing a lot of speed changes, like trying to land on a rocky spot on a planet surface to grab a biological...boy, does that sound really start to grate. :(

Most of the ships thrusters (possibly barring the DBX's rusty trawler sound) are pretty innocuous, as they should be, and I rarely even consciously think about the sound of them as I fly about and land and take off. But the Mandalay's are way too 'in-yer-face' to be pleasant company after a while and, for me, start to rapidly outstay their welcome. I've even played with the Audio settings (changed from Normal to Full Range, dropped the sound effects volume and raise the voice volume to compensate) in an attempt to reduce the sound of them, and it helps slightly. Not completely though.

In all honesty, if the Mandalay had, for example, the same thruster and boost sounds that, say, the Challenger has, I would be a super happy bunny, because they're great, sound and volume-wise. Obviously, I realise that will never happen. But if you compare and contrast, you'll probably have a better idea of where I'm coming from on this.

Anyway, there we go. Thanks for reading, and thanks for the ship. :)

Cue loads of posts disagreeing with me... ;)

P.S. Oh, and could you shift the fuel scooping HUD element up a bit higher. It's a rather low right now compared with other ships. Ta.

I'm second to that. Even found this post by googling how loud it is. Waiting for the cops knocking on my door. All the little notification sounds are so whisper quiet. And the ASP explorer is like a WWII bomber...

I wish it ran just a bit cooler. Been spoiled by my Dolphin explorer. The Dolphins ability to charge FSD for a jump while still scooping and not even get close to overheating is nice.

Slight different subject, but I've spent the last day travelling a couple of KLy's out of the Bubble and pushing the Mandalay hard by charging the FSD while finishing a scoop, and the highest I've managed to get the heat was 79%. Not Dolphin territory for sure. But no actual overheating yet, so I'm all good with it so far.

It’s just a shame you find it so offensive and there’s nothing that competes with it that has an engine sound you can appreciate.

It is.

I can sort of work around my irritation of the base thruster power change sounds. To a point. There is something slightly flawed with the sound triggering though, and I've had a couple of occasions when adjust my position finely to land among rocks where the thruster sound cut off abruptly, rather that tail off as it should. Never had that before with any other ships...

But why oh why is the boost sound so stupidly loud? Seriously. The dynamic range of that sound needs some major compressing. The difference between the loudest and quietest sections are too wide and make it stick out like a sore thumb compared with all my other ships boost sounds....

A potentially 100% perfect ship...minus 5% for the choice of sounds. Was almost there.... ;)

Can't yet say about Mandalay but that seems strange when, after some experiences with it, the T8 has an almost imperceptibly quiet engine sound unless you boost with it.

The T8's sounds, boost an all, are okay here. Never found them intrusive at all. Never found any other ship sounds intrusive either (after the AspX change). The Mandalay's boost sound is currently on another level of loud.

Audio design should be there to compliment what is happening, to provide immersion and feedback; not to take front and centre stage.

Not intrusive. Actually the complete opposite rather, in… unless boost is used, it’s practically inaudible (at least with the audio/volume levels as I have them set).

The sound itself is fine and meaty. No issues there. :) It's the volume of it, compared to everything else, that's the issue for me. It's not balanced with the rest of the game or other ships boost sounds. It's like someone used the wrong range settings when processing it.
That's fair, if they dropped the volume a bit I'd be fine with it.

I'm more offended by the two pairs of "O O" in either side window.. well, maybe offended is too strong a word. Is titillated more the word I'm searching for.

Seriously?

TBF I’ve not used it stock, but it’s rarely still scooping by the time the FSD timer is done and even when charging in the corona it’s nowhere near overheating. Yeah, it’s not as icy cold as the dolphin, but I’m still genuinely questioning the need for a heat sink.
Unless you accidentally fall into a star or something, and possibly not even then.

Keep it for the rare close encounter of “Land in between a close orbiting binary pair after a jump”. If just as an extra safety measure.

It's like using a railgun or imperial hammer with plasma slug to fire off a bit of fuel when manual plotting, that's probably redundant now as you can just do a tap of SCO instead.

Maybe, but the loss of jump range for a G5 lightweighted heatsink is… negligible. I’d think, anyway, so it wouldn’t really hurt to have one.
