Let's discuss RARES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And how it unbalances Powerplay.

I don't know. I wasn't aware of a 200Ly threshold.

I simply looked up the best locations to get rares in INARA. I chose a good spot that happens to be a distance of 120Ly away from my power's region... or (by chance) 180Ly on the far side of the region. So of course I dump rares at the far side. And it looks like it is very popular for other cmdrs too.

The Old Worlds are about 170 light years from where I'm operating, and they've giving me, on average, about 30 merits per ton. On the other hand, there's a system 40 light years away that gives me only 7 merits/ton.

Whatever it did before, it now seems to still increase gradually out to 200 LY, but anything over 150 LY it doesn't make very much difference.
Original purchase price was 7199 credits for this one.

Does it? I just follow inara's list where it shows a max profit of about 17K per t.
I don't know if you can trust Inara on the rare goods data. It shows a maximum profit of 17k per tonne for all profitable rares outside a certain threshold from your position.

What I can tell you, because I wrote it down when I did some rare trading testing: When Ngurii was still in boom and sold 80t per visit (so, the week before last), I sold those 80t at a distance of 203 ly for a total profit of 3,165,040 credits, which amounts to a profit of 39,563 credits per tonne, and I got 3058 merits or 38.225 merits per tonne for it.

The same week I sold Rajukru Multi-Stoves at a distance of 202 ly for a profit of 15,118 credits per tonne, so less than the profit projected by Inara, and gained 16.31 merits per tonne for it.

At this point in time, I would not trust Inara for rare goods. The supply numbers seem whack, too.

Does system state ie boom/investment affect the price of where rares are sold & consequently the amount of merits received ? I'm presuming so, also does population come into it?
We know about distance.
And would a negative state like war, civil war, civil unrest, bust, famine, outbreak etc have an effect?

Did try the escape pods thing.
Dunno if it's just me but my limpets just foul up underneath and hang there for ages! Seems intermittent, sometimes their (10 or so) 100% doing their thing and then as above.
So.. tourist anarchy and find a beacon..that's how it's done without aggro.
Not just you but also not all the time. Someone theorized it happens if you have more than one limpet out but it happens to me with only one as well.

If you put camera mode to look at your ship it looks like the limpets stay stuck in a position that doesn't go to the cargo hatch to your ship is as "following" even if you're full stop while they're holding canisters, which said canisters seems to have some wiggling that puts you at risk of epilepsy if you are to stare at them for an extended amount of time o_O

They don't seem to be affected by the state of the system you're selling them to, in general - that, or I got lucky that none of my test systems had any relevant states. Rares also don't have conventional demand levels so population shouldn't matter. Even economy doesn't matter: the AZ Cancri rare sounds like it should be much more valuable to Terraforming economies, but it isn't.

Something like Terrorist Attack which makes weapons temporarily illegal might stop you selling the weapon-class rares (or make you go through the black market, which then probably wouldn't give merits).

I've been doing nothing but interdicting, scanning, bounty-hunting, and wreck salvage and it's honestly pretty funny - the salvaging is way more profitable merit-wise than the combat activities. PP2 is giving me a dumb choice: do I want to have fun playing space privateer and get almost no benefit, or monotonously clean up space wrecks and actually get rewarded?

Another major gripe: what in the heck is happening with the Power Conflict Zones? I went into one of the rare conflicted systems and the zones were completely empty, every last one of them. No ships, no objects, not even ornamental wreckage.

Still can't compete with rares hauling, but I don't really want to. It looks boring TBH.

yep it's been happening to many players, including myself , repeatedly and regardless of mode or group.
And apparently it's a "known issue" , hopefully to be fixed by next week ( if it isn't , yipes )

It's gonna be even more boring now --> https://forums.frontier.co.uk/threads/elite-dangerous-powerplay-2-0-update.630423/

you did close the distance to the center of the zone, right?
sometimes ive found an seemingly empty instance that populated when i got closer to the poi.
i tried, and i am yet to find an empty power cz.
is it occuring consistently? in the same cz? multiple czs? same system?

Thank you for mentioning it. It seems that the function parameters determining the rare commodity prices may have changed (not sure if in this update or sooner) or may no longer be the same for all rare commodities. Soontill Relics sold for that price is quite high. I will do my research, but I will certainly appreciate more charts like Ian did as it provides further reference. :)

Same experience for me. Instance seems empty when I drop, but once I get closer to the nav point, ships pop up left and right.

Nobody really looked at rare trading for so long, I wouldn't be surprised if it's been a while and gone unnoticed ;).

I didn't do enough testing to draw fancy charts, but this is what I found when I did test rare trading for Kaine (Forgot to note the system state of the source and sell system though):

Thanks, that's useful! Just to be sure, the "Profit/t" column is truly a profit (sellprice - buyprice) or the price you sold the commodity for ("raw" sellprice)?
