Powerplay question re combat.

I'm presently mining in a foreign power's space. Each time I return to my carrier, there's a scripted even, where a local power's ship is hanging around waiting for me, and while landing, it scans me and starts shooting. I checked it out and it shows clean before and after it starts shooting, but it remains clean, so I can't shoot back at it. Is that right? Surely, if it's going to shoot me, it should be marked "enemy", or it should become "wanted" after shooting me because I'm not a criminal. I'm pretty sure that either my carrier or the green ships guarding it kill the NPC because I've heard it pop several times, but I never see because I'm on the landing pad. I'm worried that if I shoot it, my own security will turn on me.

Is that right?
Yes - in your own power's space, you can shoot at Clean ships of other powers without getting a bounty, and they get a bounty if they retaliate.

If you're in an enemy power's space, their agents get the same benefit. You won't get notoriety for killing them, so the bounties can be cleared quickly at an Interstellar Factor later, but you probably want to be a bit further from station guns when you do, yes.

If you're mining there because you want to undermine the system, it's something you'll need to deal with; if you're just mining for profit then there are probably safer places to do it.

Thanks for a good explanation. I'm not worried about the safety because I'm mining in a haz RES with a Cutter. Would it be possible for you to explain how to undermine by mining?

Mining can be used in all three action types - and is potentially the most effective cargo action per tonne delivered - but to stop it being a "why would you ever do anything else?" option it has very strict requirements on location and cargo handling.

- you mustn't do anything which would take the "is mined" flag off your cargo (the big ones: don't dump and rescoop, don't transfer it between ship and carrier using the carrier market, spare tonnes held in your refinery won't count if they eventually get refined while you're docked but so long as you've sold the rest of that cargo type first won't interfere either)
- you must obtain it in a mining site in the correct system for the one you're selling to

ActionMine inSell in
Reinforcing your own systemsThe system you are reinforcingThe system you are reinforcing
Undermining enemy systemsThe system you are underminingThe system you are undermining
Acquisition of neutral systemsAny friendly Fortified or Stronghold system in range of the neutral systemThe neutral system you are acquiring

So in general, you're giving up some of the credit value of the cargo (it's highly unlikely that the best prices are obtained from the same system as the best mining site) in exchange for a powerful source of merits.

Thanks for that. Here's what I did: I mined 500T platinum in Aisling stronghold system. I went direct to the station in that system and sold it. I got zero merits. Is that because I didn't do any of the 10 weekly assignments? How do I get merit points by mining in that case? This PP is just too complicated! It was much easier before, when it was absolutely clear what you had to do and which ships you could kill.

That should have worked - just in case there's something weird going on, what system and what station did you sell it to?

Interesting. People have certainly been undermining Paesia a lot with mined goods (though not as much as the reinforcement) so it should work in general.

After completing the 5 ship-based PP assignments, I tried the mining again. I sold the 522T for about 50 million and got zero credits.

So is Platinum mining nerfed?? I went to 3 different "Double" Platinum hotspots, after scanning (Prospecting) over 200 asteroids within 5km of the center I found ZERO, ZILCH, NADA. Not one rock had platinum in a double hotspot??? I've done alot of mining in the past, probably 1-2 billion worth, so I know how platinum mining works and what to look for. This is either totally broken, or nerfed into the ground. In either way, not acceptable. Folks, this is a "GAME", I'm here to have fun and engaging experiences, not end up wanting to pull my hair out after a couple hours.
If it is a "Nerf", this needs to stop.

Go to the haz RES in Paesia planet 2 and do what I suggested in post#34 here. You'll get all the platinum you'll ever want. It's a lot quicker than normal hotspot mining and a bit more interesting. I must have taken at least 200 billion from there. I get a billion a night while I'm collecting raw materials. Don't waste time with weapons nor any mining tools except lasers if you want to do it fast:

I haven't tried underMining far away from my own power but as an AD pledge I can tell you mining in Paesia certainly works for us. Does your power have any systems in range or are you too far away? You may need to stay close to your power's borders.

That's not in my powerplay territory and would NOT qualify for merits.
Mining is also an Undermining action. It's not usually quite as fast for the same value of rock, but of course if you can get the rocks faster that cancels out.

Not one rock had platinum in a double hotspot?
This is normally the time to ask "are you absolutely sure that was a metallic ring?" but as an experienced miner you wouldn't have made that mistake.

So ... do you find Platinum elsewhere in the ring outside the hotspots? What about in just a single hotspot?

Are you suggesting that you can can only undermine nearby systems that are on the border of your own power? Can anybody confirm this?

did you actually "Read" my post? DOUBLE PLATINUM HOTSPOT would indicate what to you?

You can undermine anywhere, but the further from your own power's borders you are, the greater the Beyond Frontline Penalty, and the smaller the merits you get for the same action.
