Well done Frontier!

This makes me very happy and I'm looking forward to at the very least - an interesting future. Well done Frontier! I hope that all designers, developers, managers, everybody - enjoy what they are doing - you are doing good! It is very heartwarming to see :D

Relevant quote: "With new story elements and ships, Elite Dangerous revenue from both the base game and paid downloadable content ('PDLC') grew versus the comparative period, with PDLC sales almost doubling through strong player engagement."

Great so the dream of new planet types and ship interiors should be more plausible.

P2WFTW, then? Great to hear that they are having success, this increases the chance of the game being supported longer still.

I'm guessing that means a ton of people were laid off?
I heard a lot of (if not basically all) the writing team got dumped, which would explain some of the lesser quality GalNet articles which popped up over the last few months*, and why they have been so infrequent.

I’m certainly not building any hopes for the narrative until we can see that they’ve got more writers in again. If they even plan to at all (but we have no way of knowing that outside of Frontier).

*Potentially subjective view.

It looks like revenues are the same as the previous year, so the gains are from cutting costs... I'm guessing that means a ton of people were laid off?
Indeed. Wait for the diluted full year results that strip out xmas sales (and maybe the PC2 release hype idnk.) 3 day trading volume was poor for a "Strong Turnaround" rns & the 25% spike in share price seems mendacious imo. "Return to profitability" is not exactly difficult atm given those layoffs, PC2 popularity & the recent write-downs for the ditching of foundry +/- those acquistional costs.

A doubling of pdlc for edo does provide hope for our worn-out edo server hamsters though (assuming it's not only a thousand Cmdrs buying 50k ARX for an early access ship, instead of the usual five thousand Cmdrs dutifully buying their annual 5k ARX pj.) Hopefully new Cmdr count is really, really high, & each has a deep wallet! Bodes well for colonisation 2025, but frankly I'd place more stock in a genuine "state of the game" infographic that other game devs are so fond of (rather than any cleverly crafted rns) re #SaveOurHamsters🐹

The Galnet news isn't bad imo and shouldn't be a high priority. I don't mind 1 Galnet news article per week. ED's development should focus on delivering QOL improvements and the most requested, big features. That would draw in new and inactive players and increase DLC sales.

An important indicator is the 24-hour peak concurrent player count. When Powerplay 2 launched on 31 October 2024 the player count doubled on Steam from 3,122.4 to 5,904.1 in December 2024 (that's not the total player count though). Powerplay needs more missions, variety to keep it fun.

It might not be the highest priority but I don’t believe having a decent story/narrative following is a terrible thing either and would only support the ongoing gameplay/feature development. I don’t think (with my available limited knowledge) that it would require or have nearly the same as active development of active features, even if obviously those people have to be paid as well.

It adds flair that is otherwise absent. And the gameplay can be good but it is better when it has an actual story to follow alongside of* - for those that care. And there’s a fair few people that do even if they might not be a majority in any sense.

*That is especially the case for the Thargoid narrative/war which just feels a bit… empty, when GalNet primarily serves as a means to excuse gameplay events - sometimes poorly - or a giant plot hole is added so someone can see through their fantasy of bombing the alien space equivalent of a stationary Bismarck in their modern spacecraft. Aka Guardian nanite torpedoes that don’t really make sense unless you ignore previous lore precedents that were being set up or implied through actions of the Thargoids regarding the unclassified relic.
