Elite Dangerous | System Colonisation Beta Details & Feedback

I was able to complete an Ocellus station solo in about 35 hours of playing time. I used a Cutter and no Fleet carrier. So this is doable even for a large station. The CMM increase really made it better. I think it would be reasonable to extend the time to complete the first station to 5 or 6 weeks for CMDRs who have limited time to play. Overall though I really like the Colonization feature. I'm not sure I like the capped system income though.

wow. wondered what might be in the next 15Ly from my new station. It appears that there are exactly two colonisable systems, both of which comprise a single star. So that wasnt a long daisy chain then.
That depends surely on what is 15Ly from them.

Besides being able to build stations, are there any other benefits only the system architect gets that can't be transferred to another player somehow (the passive income can be transferred through carrier trading)?

I've been trying to claim a system for three days now with no success (actually two systems; I already got locked out of claiming one because I failed the claim twice, and I'm about to fail my first claim on another system in 2 hours or so) because the beacons keep resetting after relogging, and I'm considering trying it with an alt account but I'm worried that this would be a mistake.

you will lost your ming constructing your ocellus starport solo. Just ask ZakolkaTV about this.

Have to see how this fares. The time limit and materials list is going to make this your life's work and the 15-16 ly limit seems short.

Much like the Community Goal reward FSD drives, if you missed the free ones it's a problem collecting the materials to build them. Yes it can be done but the requirements are questionably unrealistic. Starting to seem a lot like "World of Warcraft" where you spend your life playing catch-up but never getting anywhere. Progress starts to be a job and I already have one of those.

I'm sure there are a lot of people will disagree and that's fine. The game is "grindy" enough and simply moving around is an incredible time sink. While this may be seen as minor to long time experienced players, new players are facing a lot of limitations to catch up. Even the pre built ships, while an arguably nice addition, will offer minimal assistance. Imagine starting as a new player right now. In the name of all that is holy do not think about starting in "open". You don't need the drama.

Knowing that your squadron becomes one of the factions at newly created stations I quit my old squadron and my friend and I made a new one. But the outposts we have built in our colonised systems still have the old squadron as a faction and not the new one despite the squadron change happening before the stations were completed.

Bug ? or requires a weekly tick to take affect for stations created after the tick ?

No? Just jump into the systems beyond and FSS them, in a normal ship.

If you're now going to complain about needing to survey things before building outposts, I don't know what to tell ya.
I have no issue FSS'ing systems but unless I'm missing something there's no way to tell in advance which ones you will be permitted to colonise until you actually build a new outpost and ask the new colony officer where he will allow you to post a colony beacon.

I'm a very casual player (some because of life and some because ED is a bit "slow"). Either way I wanted to give my thoughts and hope others agree at some level so we can get this view seen by the devs... I'm not even sure if they are really reading 75+ pages of comments. This is from a fully SOLO person with like no friends in the game.

1) The UI is a bit confusing on how to start your claim. I have no idea if I get any money back if I reject it right away.
2) I DEFINITELY should have the right to select WHERE I want my station to be for the first one. If I missed how to do this then it obviously was not CLEAR enough for people to understand what to do - especially casual people. If I didn't miss anything, then it is ridiculous that I'm about to claim a system and I have no ability to decide ALL aspects of it from the start.
3) I should be able to adjust my station after selection or during the build process. I selected the basic station thinking I could customize it later but now find I cannot. I really would have liked one of the other slightly adjusted standard station. Being able to "add on" or do a bit more customization after the fact would be nice.
4) I've had to buy a Type-9 and and it would be nice to add to my claim via other means than just hauling. Plus it would be great if I could select an option that would let non-friends or just people on average help finish a claim instead of it either being a "group" or "solo" type situation... something to help us maybe make friends. (note I edited this line and changed my point)
5) I'm not going to say whether the resources required are not enough or too much because I don't really play enough to be able to judge that. BUT, what I can say is that it is a lot of work that requires a LOT of jumping and time especially for some of the more rare resources. Considering that not all of us can engineer ships we are stuck dealing with less jump range and that even means a lot more time or even worse situations where we cannot make the distance to our construction without having to only take a few resources at a time which means even more jumps.
6) I tried a claim that wasn't deep in the bubble because everything I could find was mostly taken. So I had to select a something bit farther out with less big stations of supplies to get my resources from. At one level I like this because it is a challenge and at another it really can hurt and I worry about later on unless we have the right supply chain that I won't be just going 100-150ly but now hundreds to get CMM or other things like fruit/veggies, etc. More effort needs to be done to ensure we have people understand the need to build out supply chains and not just rush to get to the end of the galaxy.
7) I see nothing that really lets me know WHY I should build a claim out or what the benefits are in the long run. I'm just here playing like many fearing I am missing out of something and based on the amount of resources the 4 weeks might NOT be enough time for a casual person like me. I need more info on why the benefits especially if actual money is made from these claims... I'm not wanting to fall even farther behind because 6 months from now the super rich/and large guilds like own most of the near galaxy where I play in and I can't get a system for myself.
8) I get we have 4 weeks and I might be able to pull off finishing the claim, but I'd like an option to extend the time even if I have to pay another 25 mil. I would hate to spend 4 weeks and just miss out on the claim because I was short on some of the resources. Let me extend. I know I can't get another claim till this finish but at least give us more casual people a chance at this.
9) I'm VERY worried about the galaxy turning to crap because we have people that think "funny station names" or "meme names" or just "111111111111" for 80 or whatever characters is funny. In so many parts of life people just ruin things for everyone else, and I am very worried colonization will cause that here in ED. Which makes me sad since I have always loved it - I played the first versions on my old commodore... Please consider ways to at least limit the actual jerks that do this versus some uniqueness that naming does give. I certainly don't want boring but we know how people usually go especially those that love to grief - and they exist in this game.
10) Lastly, I might like some ability to pay for transport of my stuff or a way to "rent a capital" to move the resources if I don't have the ships or time to do this. I never did the capital ship because I don't play enough to afford it but now I am being massively nerfed in my ability to play this new aspect of the game because I don't have that, engineering, and other stuff the "constant players" have...

One interesting thing I noticed. I can't get "Insulating Membrane" anywhere. But if I look into Inara, there are bunch of stations selling it. But when I arrive - there is none of it. What is more funny, when I dock, my instance updates Inara and reports there is "Insulating Membrane" on sale. What the.. Is that a bug? Or I got tricked somehow here and commodity not shown to me for any reason?

And situation with carrier looks a bit annoying, or not okay to be precise. Is that okay to wait so long or not getting opportunity to jump anywhere at all, because there are "playing some other people"?

4) you can view resources needed on the system map of your system if you click the colonization ship, no need for paper and pen.

5) yes this is not meant to be a low effort, everyone gets a system type of thing. I am thankful for this.

Frontier I think needs to be a little more careful when creating painful repetitive tasks for players. Player count is up but the brain dead grind play some are experiencing can result in some people leaving Elite and never coming back…again.
Pretty much everything in elite has always been a grind for example becoming elite in combat took a massive amount of time, getting a fleet carrier was another grind, engineering was painfull for ships then worse for suits.
Elite has been watered-down for the masses in recent times but space trucking will always be needed you can't build without supplies just like in the real world.

Inara has no special knowledge about supply. It knows what the amount was when the last CMDR with an addon landed there, and that's it. If they bought them all, or someone without the addon landed there and bought them all, inara does not know that. At times like these when there is really high demand, its good for finding stations that might have a supply, but the actual numbers are pretty much wrong all the time.

Whew, been hauling all weekend for my little outpost. Just hit 50% complete on the bar.
IT'S A LOT OF HAULING!
  • Using a T9 with 740 tons of cargo. I would love to see a new engineer that specializes in making the space in cargo holds more efficient and can add some tonnage with an efficiency blueprint. May up to 10% more with grade 5?
  • I've been interdicted twice by NPC's in about 27 runs. These encounters made for a more interesting run, but don't happen enough.
  • I REALLY love the Advanced Docking Computer on this big space cow.
  • CMM's were not an issue. My big ones are Steel and Titanium in the 5k ranges. I found that when I opened my material search to planetary ports, I found all the materials I could need. Have been going back and forth to a large planetary Refinery Port and could fill my hold with any of the materials every run.
  • We really need the material list brought forward in the UI. Just put the list on the mission tab and maybe a filter in the commodities market for 'Colonization Materials' only.
  • TOO MUCH HAULING...the colonization ships need to have missions that do different things and contribute to that percent complete bar. Maybe some raw material mining or system security protecting traders from pirates. FD you made a whole named update where all CMDRS do is haul materials...

Okay, so I expected that building a space station would be a bit of a grind but some commodities are needed in such huge amounts! I still have well over 300 runs to complete, assuming that I can get the quantities I need on each visit. This task gets harder when you have limited time to play / participate. My real frustration is that some commodities CMM and others are in such short supply, for example on my last jump, the space station had 2 Insulating Membranes, I need 7000. It feels like an Everest x 2 mission to complete, with no cold weather gear, no tent and limited food. Not sure about three weeks, three months might cut it? FD please rebalance and make this goal more achievable, surely the more that participate, the better for the community and for FD.
