I take it you didn't just stay logged in all night?
This has happend to me 3 times allready (currently bugged out for me aswell). Every time it coincided with buggy/unresponsive galaxy map, small hangs in menus here and there etc.. It'll fix itself this time aswell.
I can still work on my* 3 simultaneous projects while I wait for it to get back to normal

Mate, it went from 11k to 5k because people play in the evening and go to work in the morning. Its always 5k at 10AM.
... but you didn't. They said nobody should lose it and it's just a visual thing, so submit a report if that happened?
For that matter, 5k at 10am is still pretty high. The Wednesday before the colonisation release, the trough was 2.7k and the daily peak was only 5.3k

I mean, there was that time I couldn't log on for six months because the game would just CTD. Never changed anytthing on my end... game still didn't work just before FD did a major update (after multiple reinstalls), after update, voila, game worked again.
Maybe I should ask for six pre-colonised systems as compensation retrospectively
