Ok, here's my personal take on the list. Note that I added for myself the rule that all animals should be at least partially grassland compatible, because that's where safaris usually take place.

1. Serval (flagship)
2. Black-backed jackal
3. Impala
4. Giant eland
5. Grey crowned crane
6. Secretary bird
7. Nile crocodile
8. Black mamba (exhibit)

Mostly covers what's needed! but also includes some cool animals that are not needed but that I'd love to see (Black-backed Jackal and Impala)

My personal Planet Zoo hot take is that there are no animals that are not needed, there are the charismatic flagship species who sell dlc's and there are the filler species that I still love to see walking around in my parks, especially in shared habitats. When you have only mascots, then you have no mascots

I would pick the serval as mascot (that's what I meant by flagship back then).

4. Masai Giraffe (The main reason why I want this subspecies is because I always used this over the Reticulated Giraffe in Zoo Tycoon 2, thus is why I really want this animal in the game as well)

I too agreed. And that's why I wanted and hoped for Masai giraffe to be the second giraffe species after Reticulated giraffe.

It seems, the Honey badger will come earlier to the game than the Safari animal pack.

But I still hope, that the game developers plans to work on a Safari themed DLC.
