Planet Zoo | Asia Animal Pack | Announcement

W co b

Not directed at me but I’ll chime in anyways.

The Hot Take Hog drama

The Wolverine biome drama was also pretty great

The build up to the North American pack was pretty intense.. there was doom posting about the game ending even then and that was nearly FOUR years ago

George Boggs pack ideas always got a stir going.

And of course the flying birds drama.

The near unanimous push back against the Binturwrong was great too

Ah memories!
Man the bintuwrong got us all unified for one collective cause. That was great 😂

On the positive side I remember the collective joy the community felt when the aquatic roster got leaked (plus sun bear lol) made us all think aquatics were inevitable. Closely followed by the same vibe with the bat WE

Maybe this is a silly question so I apologise in advance for my ignorance: the map in the trailer is very tropical, but the DLC scenario is supposed to be in South Korea. Does South Korea have tropical regions like the one shown in the trailer? Or the career scenario will be a different map?

Anyway, the DLC is launching on a Wednesday, just the day I finish my short holidays, so I won't be able to play with it until some weeks later 😭😭. I'll need someone to check all the errors in the education boards and report them on the issue tracker as I always do with each new DLC.

There are no tropical forests in South Korea.

But they do have evergreen forests like this in Jeju or Gotjawal for example.

Frontier please update the base game cats, orangutan and bactrian camel so that we can build some good looking Asian areas!
Imagine that's the surprise we get, since they seem to be keeping the update under wraps...

"And also, we're pleased to announce that several animals will be receiving model updates. This includes the orangutan to have shaggy fur, the Bactrian camel looking anatomically correct, all the base game cats will be updated, the timber wolf, the grizzly bear, the American bison, and the Himalayan brown bear.
Among these updates, we'll also be updating the textures of all the base game animals to be on par with our current lineup."

Blackbuck and nilgai are perfect.

Elephant not so much.

Also, to give us specifically the Japanese raccoon dog is weird, too. It's another extremely niche species. The generic would have made more sense, what with it having a much boader range...and a captive presence outside of Japan...and even inside of Japan...

Ah well, I'll take what I can get, I guess. This one is definitely looking better than the Americas Pack.

Bornean elephant being basically paid update pretty much sums up Frontier stance on animal updates lmao.
I mean, we've gotten several animals with free updates, so it's not like it ain't gonna happen
I can finally re-create a Chinese Traditional market with Bornean Elephant Carcasses, Japanese Raccoon dogs meat and nilgai meat.
That's a terrible thing to say. It's not only gross to say on an animal forum, it's also rude to people of that culture, whether it's true or not

This pack feels a bit different to me mainly because I'm not anywhere near ready to start building for Asia species in Oakwood - the animals themselves are really good I just wish this came out after I finish my South America section 😭
Anyway my thoughts on the animals:
  • Honey Badger 9/10 - Iconic animal that was missing and it does represent a large area that was lacking before so it does add a lot. Maybe not one of my personal most wanted but its a really strong contender.
  • Lion Tailed Macaque 10/10 - Beautiful primate and perfect for this kind of pack. Looks good (body fur looking kinda weird to me though) just gotta figure out where to put them in my zoo.
  • Pere Davids Deer, Nilgai, Blackbuck 10/10 - I just love how people were suspecting we get 1 of these and they give us the whole trio lol. Grouped these 3 because they add so much together over what they would add by themselves. Now we can actually create Asian ungulate forests or monorail rides (Bronx zoo reference anyone?). Damn, now I wanna make a monorail ride.
  • Japanese Raccoon Dog 8/10 - Definitely a welcome surprise I just have no idea how to build for them though - love that we're getting more Japan representation though. One of the few canids left I would accept greatly.
  • Bornean Elephant 2/10 - So close, SO Close to a perfect roster but here we are. Feel like hes only here because Frontier thinks elephants need to be included to represent Asia when they really don't. Replace this with a bird or the Asiatic Lion. Why is it that only when we want a cat that there isn't one and when we don't want one there is one? Lol
Overall a very strong roster. No pheasant and cobra are heavy misses but feel like they're saving the flashy species for PZ2 DLC. Unfortunately, I feel like most of the animals from this pack won't make the cut into PZ2 base roster.

I really like that we are getting both the blackbuck and the nilgai as I thought it would be an either or.

They are often held together and it’s great to get cohesive species that go nicely and realistically together rather than a random lineup that don’t really sit together or miss out key species. Like when we got the red kangaroo but no emu.

My ranking of the animals:
1. Blackbuck- Well deserving of its spot! I probably wont use it a whole lot, but it'll be great for safari parks. 10/10

2. Lion-Tailed Macaque- My second choice primate choice for Asia. I would have prefered the François's langur, but its a primate nonetheless! 9.5/10

3. Pére David's Deer- Maybe not my most wanted hoofstock for Asia, but these guys are a really cool conservation success story. Its really nice to have a deer species endemic to Asia and their affintiy for water will make them fun to build for! 9/10

4. Nilgai- Again, not my most wanted hoofstock for Asia, but these guys will do wonders for the hoofstock roster. They are pretty unique and will also be going into the safari park I have planned! 8/10

5. Honey Badger- Ive never wanted the honey badger all that much. But I think these guys are pretty unique and we can never have too many small mammals. 7/10

6. Japanese Raccoon Dog- I dont know why but these guys have never interested me. I guess Im not a huge canid fan. 2/10

7. Bornean Pygmy Elephant- Might be the most puzzling choice in PZ history. I dont imagine I'll ever use it to be honest. 0/10

I would have loved to see the guar, muntjac, Chinese alligator, or a gamebird. The hoofstock is going to be a big boost for Asian safari exhibits, but apart from that, this pack isn't that exciting. Might be my least favorite pack since the 2023. Looking forward to the free update.

I gotta say, this pack has really been growing on me.
I always love it when packs include what I refer to as "low budget animals*" - that is, animals that are easy to obtain and care for, which you may find in a smaller facility that can't really afford to have all the cool big ticket animals... And both Blackbuck and Nilgai fit the bill perfectly, both for American and European zoos.
At the same time, I love how this pack also introduces animals that might feel more at home in a larger, more experienced and qualified zoo... A facility worthy of a conservation icon such as Père David's Deer, or the rare and prestigious Bornean Elephant.

I can't wait to finally start a low budget zoo with all your typical hoofstock and small mammals

[*This is not meant to discredit the animal in any way. For example, Nilgai is like my 4th favourite antelope of all time and Blackbuck is very close]

They're going to work so well in a huge grassland enclosure with water buffalo and rhino/elephant

The lion-tailed macaque looks pretty good. It's so good that our monkey roster has been buffed out.

Also, now that I know the final roster, I can plan my zoo. For a while I was debating whether to put lions with the African animals or in another stand alone habitat, but since we're unfortunately not getting the Asiatic, the choice is made.

Totally get and agree with the "low budget" thing. It's incredibly nice and useful to have options befitting either a world class accredited zoo, or a dinky little roadside safari park, since the species kept often don't overlap.
