Umm. Don't agree. The monkeys, the ratel, the nilgai, the flamingo, the dik dik, tortoise, species bear, even the detail of the rhea's feathers, all look of great quality. I think the issue is that quality is uneven, i guess it depends on who is working on what animal.
It is a matter of opinion, and I agree to some extent (hence the comment about the Bighorn being great) and can agree other animals have looked good too in the last 3 packs.
But I’m fairly comfortable on the whole stating there’s definitely a noticeable difference in overall quality of animal models between 2023 packs (Grasslands, Tropical, Arid, Oceania, Eurasia) and 2024/25 packs (Zookeepers, Americas, Asia). Which also happens to coincide with cutting back on PZ development.
I think the only animal that really had any qualms in the 2023 run of packs was the face of the sand cat - and feline faces have always been an area of contention in PZ.
But yeah the drop is definitely noticeable - mainly in fur quality. Compare Sloth Bear to Spectacled. Look at the Saiga vs the Dik-Dik. Rhea obviously has major issues in the model, Pallas’ Cat and Hamadryas but had some questionable fur. Markhor had a very odd face and not great fur, people are now questioning the Nilgai female and the Bushbuck (although I think we need to await for them in game for full judgement here). Heck, the new elephant (a furless animal so you’d expect it to look fantastic, isn’t exactly wooing anyone with its model. It’s solid, but not spectacular).
I’m not saying any of the animals we’ve gotten have been outright bad (except maybe the Rhea).
But they’re at a Conservation/Twilight/Wetlands level imo (which is still good) rather than the realistic top tier models with amazing veins and fur textures of the Grasslands-Eurasia run. Even the very good animals like the Spurred Tortoise, American Flamingo and Bighorn Sheep - aren’t at the level of the likes of the Asian Water Monitor, Nine-Banded Armadillo, Dama Gazelle, Blue Wildebeest, Dromedary, Addax, Sloth Bear, Wisent etc.
and that’s not necessary a mark on frontier. It’s an acknowledgement of how good they became at making animals at their peak when PZ was in full flow. Bodes well for PZ2 when it’s the forefront of Frontier’s development. Those base game animals will surely look superb.
