DLC21 Speculation

Worldwide Animal Pack, 2 habitat species from each continent and 2 walkthrough exhibit birds (copium)
Sure - I'll give this a go:

Africa - Greater Kudu, Nile Crocodile (3rd Black Colobus or vervet monkey)
Asia - Thomas' Leaf Monkey, Tibetan Yak
Europe - Atlantic Walrus, European Hare (no rabbit species in the game so far!)
North America - White-tailed Deer, American Black Bear (3rd - American Elk)
South America - Golden-mantled Howler Monkey, South American Coati (3rd - brown brocket deer or spider monkey)
Oceania - Tree Kangaroo, Perentie
Antarctica - Rockhopper Penguin or Gentoo Penguin
Exhibits - King Cobra, Tokay Gecko
Walk-through Exhibit - Owls (multiple species), Parrots/Parakeets would be another good option.

Ok... So two packs ideas?

Worldwide (my new version actually following the rules but not realistic lol)

Polar: Rockhopper penguin - Musk ox
North America: American black bear - White nosed coati
South America: Patagonian mara - Black howler monkey
Europe: Western cappercaillie - Great white pelican
Africa: Secretary bird - Mantled guereza
Asia: Golden pheasant - Mandarin duck
Oceania: Perentie - Short beaked echidna

WTE: Hummingbirds - Lorikeets

Anniversary: Nile crocodile

Education Animal Pack (don't really get what the common concept among the animals in this pack is supposed to be but i assume unique adaptations and evolutionary history and endangered animals?)

1. Golden lion tamarin
2. Short beaked echidna
3. Secretary bird
4. Mexican spider monkey
5. Gerenuk
6. Musk ox
7. Southamerican coati

Nene should absolutely be in endangered animals pack.
One of the biggest conservation success story being brought back from the brink when there were only 30 individuals left
I think conservation success are a better fit for the "education/museum" theme discussed earlier, with an "Endangered Animal Pack" being reserved for species with the (critically) endangered conservation status

I mean they are still endangered, but yeah generally i agree.

The animals themselves could be a mix of animals important to the study of natural history whether that be because they represent important discoveries, long lost lineages, important zoo stories or are defined by their conservation efforts

That's what love about this pack idea, that apart from potential in cool scenery, there's a lot of flexibility in choosing animal roster.

Lineages, adaptations, conservation status...are all good qualifications for an animal to end up in Eductaion/Museum pack. So it not only allows some popular overlooked picks to make a return, but also introduces a chance for some really weird critters to make it in a pack.

I made a little table to "grade" picks that I'd like to see in such pack, loosely inspired by standards you both used.

I'm looking for animals that stand out. Whether it be their taxonomy (last of their kind, living fossil or belonging to rare group of animals), adaptations (specialized lifestyle and/or physical attributes that enhance it) and conservation (Endangered or worse on IUCN).

TaxonomyAdaptations Conservation
Sumatran Rhinoceros ✔️ ❌ ✔️
Short Beaked Echidna ✔️ ✔️ ❌
Sea Otter ❌ ✔️ ✔️
Pacarana ✔️ ❌ ❌
Slender Snouted Crocodile ❌ ✔️ ✔️
Black Faced Spoonbill ❌ ✔️ ✔️
Numbat ✔️ ✔️ ✔️

Sea Otter and Crocodile could move their taxonomy to ✔️ depending on how you look at it I guess. It's not like there's any objectivity to these categories lol.

I would assume this pack would work like last few, so no exhibit animal, but that's a shame because there's so many good options, one would say that this theme is God given for several exhibit animals even.

I would love an endangered/ return to conservation pack, and I really think it would be one of the best spots to round out the remainder of the roster. Here would be my picks:
  1. Golden lion tamarin 🌟 it’s really a miracle they aren’t in the game already
  2. Tree Kangaroo, I think this could be a very popular addition, and it’s a great pick for the second mammal to our pack
  3. Cuban crocodile, maybe this is my bias to the Caribbean but I love these guys
  4. Radiated tortoise, I would love more than one reptile in a pack, and I think these guys are perfect for Madagascar and can give us a non-mammal option for the continent
  5. Nene, another important bird and I think Hawaii deserves a shout out in the roster
  6. Prarie Chicken, probably one of the more strange animals, but I think in terms of conservation and education this would be a good slot. Not to mention we could still use another animal to represent the Great American Prarie and is easily my personal oddball choice.
  7. Grey crowned crane, I think for another endangered bird this would be a great pick for more mixed species African habitats.

Let the scenery be more educational pieces and I would be a very happy camper.

On one hand I can see the “big final pack”, on the other times have changed and Frontier could be ready to move on. Financially it might make some sense, one last DLC #21 to hold over sales for JWE2 and PC2.

Part of me is honestly ready to move on, look forward to the cool new pathing system, and the potential of updated exhibits, climbing fixed, and aviaries makes me exited! Though, I recognize it’s possible not all of PZ1 will be in PZ2 off the rip. I am not exited about rebuying animals, but that depends on what the packs look like going forward.

Mainly, I want packs to return to Wetlands/ Grasslands levels of diversity. If after all this time we get aviaries but packs still end up as majority ungulates, with long (potentially years) wait times for me to get a duck, I might go like Homer Simpson and start pulling out my hair. 🫠
NDAs mean we'll never get the full story but I wonder how much we'll ever know about the decision-making process within Frontier beyond the more general things that have been said about species/theme selection. I know it's been alluded to from former Frontier employees that the roadmap was once much more ambitious than what we finally got, and it's easy to assume that bits and pieces of things that were intended but scrapped made it into the game in partial form (e.g. Zookeeper being half a highlands pack, the entire walkthrough exhibit concept).

With Frontier's current skeleton crew it's easy to imagine that the lack of new rigs and the redoubled ungulate/carnivore focus are based on what's easy to make and can most easily be sold to a general audience that sees new cat/dog and gets happy for it, regardless of how over-represented they are compared to primates, waterfowl, etc. That being said, Americas got my hopes up that they were going to start including multiple birds per pack, or even a very consistent one per pack, but alas.
