Saw a handful of species for the first time this past week, which shot them up my list of priorities or in some case made me understand the demand for them in this game.
Never really saw the appeal for the Himalayan monal over any number of other pheasants, but now that I've seen one in person I totally get it. That sheen is beyond compare. I still think the golden pheasant should be our first pheasant, but I wouldn't be remotely unhappy with the monal anymore. Similarly, I also saw a green peafowl, and realize that it's far from just a recolor. Larger, more upright posture, and again just some absolutely stunning coloration in person. Puts the Indian peafowl to shame, frankly. I'm not exactly clamoring for its inclusion or anything, but if it were to show up, I wouldn't be too disappointed.
Aye-aye's another big one. I had previously been under the impression that they were largely sedentary, basically the primate equivalent of a sloth, koala, or Brazilian porcupine, so they fell into my "neat but boring/unrealistic in practice" category. Couldn't be further from the case. The ones I saw were some of the most active primates I have ever laid eyes on, they were considerably larger than I was expecting, and I loved their big bushy tails. They're a top priority for me now.
Also saw some olive baboons. I still don't think we need a second baboon, but these were still genuinely impressive to see in real life, in a different way than Hamadryas baboons. I had it in my head that they were essentially Hamadryas-lite, but no, they certainly have their own distinct appeal. I don't really see them brought up anymore post-Zookeepers pack outside of Zoo Tycoon completion discussions, but at the same time I don't think they'd be the worst monkey inclusion.
Black-and-rufous elephant shrew is insanely cool to see in person. I don't think it's really in contention as a smaller species, but I'd be thrilled if we did get it.
I guess that's about it. For having visited 9 facilities last week, 7 of them being for the first time, I didn't see all too many new Planet Zoo viable species. I guess the others would include mongoose lemur, booted macaque, Visayan warty pig, and a few dozen waterfowl species (LOL)... either too "whatever" or unrealistic to mention in detail, really.
