DLC21 Speculation

I know this isn’t gonna happen, but I hope in the next DLC we get 6 birds. Specifically this amount so that we can finally get the amount of birds in game to 20 species. It took us a couple years to bring the number of birds in this game to double digits, and if we are gonna get the mystical “one last DLC” I think a bird pack would still be a cool way to go.i don’t even care what is on it, it’s just amazing one of the most diverse group of vertebrates is rivaled for representation in PZ with specific families of mammalian species.

I know this isn’t gonna 100% not gonna happen, we might not even get another DLC, but it would be cool to finally feel acknowledged. Either way, the inevitable sequel is probably where we will see birds (or at least it better).

For kicks and giggles:

Secretary Bird
Wood Duck
Mandarin Duck
Shoebill
Australian Pelican
Wild Turkey
Scarlet Ibis

and if we wanna fan the flames: one WTE: Scarlet Macaw. Which would actually be worse than no WTE is having just one WTE bird. Proving they can do it, it will work on the game's engine but they never invested further in it. Which we already kind of know from the bats and butterflies, but I can separate them in my head from all the various potential WTE birds they could do.

I like that, but here would be my idea:

Aviary Pack:
This DLC will come with 7 new birds and will include new props like grid mesh pieces and new enrichment items! These new enrichment items will include perches, nest boxes, and nest stands.
  1. Secretary bird 🌟, the star of the show! It is the primary user of the new nest stand. Would also come with a new fake snake toy.
  2. Roseate spoonbill
  3. American Wood Duck, they both roost and nest in trees.
  4. Burrowing owl, can use both the nest stand and the burrows in game.
  5. Southern Ground Hornbill
  6. Superb lyrebird, my oddball of choice and I think fun representation for Oceania.
  7. White stork, good choice for Europe and Africa
Over all Africa and the Americas would benefit the most, and at this point I’m ok with that. The wood duck is a specific choice for a species but they both roost in trees and nest in them. Over all I wanted to pick species that can actually use the perches and new features, so unfortunately certain game birds, cranes, pelicans, penguins, and other sea birds would not make the cut.

This is not directed at you in particular, but i realy don't understan the popularity of the ground hornbills. They pop up in almost every habitat bird list. I personally want a million birds before those hornbills.

That said a final all birds pack would be an amazing way to end the game. I would obviously change the hornbill for a pelican and the lyre bird for the Golden pheasant or an ibis (i love lyre birds but i doubt they can do justice to their sound mimicing behaviour).

My personal pick for the roster of an all avian pack would be:

1. Secretary bird
2. Burrowing owl
3. Great white pelican
4. Mandarin duck or WFWD
5. Golden pheasant or argus pheasant
6. Saddle billed stork (but white stok is fine for Europe rep, and is more of an iconic bird overall i just prefer more colorful and exoric species in general)
7. Northern bald ibis

Grey crowned crane for anniversary.

And Hummingbirds for wte. It wouldn't be as rage inducing as just one macaw.

I don't really understand the appeal of the secretarybird. Or most of the commonly suggested ducks.

And I especially don't understand the appeal of the burrowing owl.
the secretary bird is almost entirely because its from zoo tycoon and is funky looking. The burrowing owl and hornbills are because people are so desperate for flying birds that they will take the closest approximation possible even so both are fairly common animals in zoos with the burrowing owl being one of the top 10 most common owls in captivity. Ducks are highly region dependant so personal preference skews what people want.

There are more reasons than that though.. can't talk about the hornbills but:

Secretary bird: yes being in zt2 is a big part of it (at least for me, since i really enjoyed playing with it in that game, it was one of my favorite animals and one of the most entertaining ones; i have similar feelings about the musk ox and the gerenuk for the same reasons), but is not the only reason. They are very unique and different from what we have, they look beautiful, they are iconic on their own right and we imagine they would come with some sort of new enrichment item for their stomping behaviour. It is also one of the few options we have for raptorial birds that would work for the habitat system (seriemas and burrowing owl being the other possibilities).

Burrowing owl: they would hit pretty much all the same boxes as the secretary bird. Unique, cute, funny and entertaining, they would be able to burrow, they are the only option for an owl that is somewhat possible and on top of that they are widespread all across the Americas (not to mention a fairly common sight both in the wild, urban settings and in captivity) so they will be great for representation of both continents and very versatile for a variety of zoo sections as well.

Yea idk why the Secretary Bird sometimes gets “rejected” as a pure nostalgia pick when it’s an amazing unique animal on its own merits that is possible for the game. Yea ZT2 of course has influence on it but let’s not pretend a terrestrial snake hunting raptor isn’t a dope choice for an animal. For example it has a higher following than a Javan rhino or Gelada or Gerenuk (even though I’d love the later 2 as well)

burrowing owl in the same vein is a really cool terrestrial bird that can work similarly to prairie dogs… in what world is that not unique and cool

The secretary bird would not be anywhere near as popular if it had not been in zoo tycoon 2 while yes it is a cool and unique animal that has a ton of merit without being apart of zoo tycoon 2 I just dont see it being as prominent as it currently is in the collective conscious since it is a fairly obscure pick.

Nostalgia fuelled its start in discussions and now that it has been apart of discussions for long enough it is strong enough on its own to be highly requested but it would have never been apart of discussions without nostalgia.

There was also the appearence of the secretary bird as a key character in the oscar winning movie Flow last year, so it had some kind of cultural pressence lately as well.

I mean yea of course. That’s what my reply said. But again it’s more than just that and the owl is proof of that and my comparison to other past ZT2 animals was to prove that point that it’s not purely nostalgia

I don't care about that.

I just don't want it because it's an aviary bird and there's no easy way to build an aviary.

The only reason people don't think it's an aviary bird is because of ZT2, though. As though that game was the height of realism.

Clouded Leopards are always in covered habitats too. I guess Planet Zoo isn’t the height of realism either

There are plenty of examples of secretary birds in open air habitats so it isnt necessarily accurate to reduce it as such. Also realistically the only thing stopping us from easily building aviaries is pieces namely a proper mesh set on the grid so this could easily be added into the pack or base game update associated with the secretary bird.

To each their own ofcourse, everybody can do with the game what they want, be it building hyperealistic zoos or creating something completely out there. But calling PZ a cartoony game is a pretty big stretch in my opinion. Aside from the humans and maaybe some of the older animals (even here id argue that the devs probably intended to go for a realistic look, but just werent as good at it as they were during their peak) there really isnt anything cartoony about it

Ah yes as when animals die they sometimes just fling across the map or just ragdoll under the map
