Differences between Horizons and Odyssey?

So for me, I don't really see a benefit for me to play Oddity. Thanks for the replies folks.
It sounds like you made your choice, but I still wanted to chime in. 😁

As far as I know it, Horizons and Odyssey are running on the same engine in the same universe. The difference is that Odyssey has all the On Foot content, new ships, and some different textures. I think there's a bigger difference between Horizons/Odyssey and Horizons Legacy (HL). HL is on a different engine. It's live, but in a different universe. It doesn't have as much of the MMO kitsch as the current version. In my opinion, it feels more like a space sim and less like an MMO grind. You still have powers, but fewer of them. You still have tons of ships (I think the same as Horizons, but not the ships from Odyysey). My understanding is that Horizons Legacy being preserved in a stable (no updates) state mostly for the sake of console players who are no longer supported with the new stuff. The performance of HL s a LOT better (my rig runs hot with Horizons/Odyssey and cool with HL) so you can run with higher settings. I've read that the VR looks better in Legacy. I would also say that the visuals are arguably better in Legacy. The visual changes with the current engine have had mixed reviews and I find them mostly grating.

There's also plain Legacy which pre-dates Horizons, but I don't know anything about that.

I'm actually playing Legacy for what sounds like similar reasons as you not buying into Odyssey. I have Odyssey, but found the On Foot content to be mostly not good. I don't like the newer visuals and rendering. I like being able to run Legacy with ultra high settings vs. current on medium. I actually like having less MMO-ness to it. I'm not grinding anything for anything. I'm just lackadaisically meandering through a galaxy size sandbox and honing my flight skills in a Newtonian physics environment (i.e. FA off).

Fair enough, commander. It's there if you ever change your mind. And yes, on some days, it certainly is Elite Dangerous: Oddity. xD

Note: Odyssey becomes the cheapest option by a considerable margin if you wish to use newer ships, by virtue of them being available in-game for credits. I'd always encourage buying the expansion, even if ignoring all the new content, vs spending up in the Arx store just to access some or all of the new ships, certainly for any that have since been added as in-game credit purchase options.

Just a note, but I have access to all the new ships in Horizons. I even own 4 of them. :)

But do you own Odyssey? It's not like the new ships are completely blocked when playing in Horizons mode (like eg. landing on thin-atmosphered planets is.) If you have a Panther Clipper in Odyssey and then switch to Horizons, it will work just as fine. The limitation is not about having and using the new ships. (Although, to be fair, I'm not 100% sure now what the limitations are.)

The question is whether someone who doesn't own the Odyssey expansion at all can purchase the new ships.

Chiming in with "data"... I'm on v4.0+ Horizons and don't own Odyssey. Docked at the CG station (Starlace in Minerva) and I don't see the Cobra Mk V, Mandalay, or T8 for sale but they are listed there on Inara. Wiki says these paid early access ships are now available for credits, so this proves that those ships are not available to Horizons v4.0+ players who don't own Odyssey..., unless we specifically buy those ships individually for ARX, like @kofeyh posted above.

I do own Oddity, but I bought the ship when playing Horizons (as well as the others). And probably because my home station is Jameson I get to purchase stuff as soon as it's available(?)

"Bought" how? With ARX? With credits? Had you already purchased the ship previously with ARX or with credits in Odyssey?

I'm guessing they are available to players who have Odyssey, perhaps even if they aren't logged in to the Odyssey version but the 4.0 Horizons.

This is entirely speculative, but someone who has only 4.0 Horizons and not EDO can only buy them with ARX, but someone who owns EDO can buy them with credits (of course) but when they log in to Horizons the flag in the database that's presumably being checked to see if they have EDO allows them to buy as well. So it's owning EDO that's the difference, not logging in to EDO?

Maybe.

I cannot say what is available to Horizons only owners. I do own Oddity, and play mostly in Horizons (not legacy). And as I've said before, my ship store in Horizons has the Panther Clipper available for 64 million credits (and change), as well as all the other new ships.

My guess is that If I were a Horizons owner and wanted the new ships, I could buy Oddity and then buy the ships for in-game credits, or I could just buy Arx and use that for ship purchases? Sounds about right. I think.

I'm not really sure I understand the motivation behind that. It's not like the two modes are somehow different, other than that certain content is unavailable in Horizons mode. Otherwise both modes are completely identical. (Well, except for the fact that as was mentioned earlier, there might be less gankers in Horizons.)

Even if you don't care about the on-foot content, the only thing you are doing to yourself by playing in Horizons mode is that your locking yourself out of Odyssey surface settlements, some of which may have materials or missions you are interested in. (And, of course, visually you are locking yourself out of thin-atmosphered planets. See my other post in this thread about that subject...)

What 'motivation'?

The game was released, I bought it, watched the demo crash and crash (eventually CTD'd). Never was interested in legs as I have that in another space game and wasn't that thrilled with it TBH.

Eventually the game ran without crashing. I wanted the new graphics and planets. Until I didn't. Visited a few dead rocks with thin atmospheres. Not impressed, but that's just me. Not interested in settlements as they (and the stuff they have) are Oddity related.

I don't play Open, so gankers are a non-issue for me. I'm not interested in the current play-style offerings in Oddity, but that may someday change. Maybe.

I think I'm misreading your post because I loaded Horizons, docked at a stronghold carrier and looked at the ships available for purchase. The Panther Clipper is not available and the only ships around the range of 64mil credits are type-9 & corsair.

I dock/hang out at Jameson. Jameson has all ships and modules, which is why I hang out there. :)

Not all ports have every ship available.
