Orbital lines - a full and frank discussion

+1

absolutely.
Make them optional at least.

Anyone from Frontier Dev. can say something ?
this is not the first time that i see this topic with no answers.

It would kinda cool to turn them off, wouldn't want to see them gone though as they're quite handy when exploring.

Come on devs, don't come and say that is impossible...

...just the first idea that i have in mind: put a way to set the alpha res. of those lines to zero at command, and that's it !

The lines are tied directly to the Exploration Cartography information you have on the system you're in. If you have no info, and do not scan a system, there are no lines. They only appear once you've either scanned or purchased cartography info on that system.

This means there is already a "display lines=true" and "display lines=false" state built into the game, based on this cartography info.

It should not be very difficult at all to allow for the player to manually toggle this state either on or off, since the "on" or "off" states are already built into the game.

Please make this happen FD! Those lines are useful at times, but completely ruin the beauty of this incredible galaxy you've so painstakingly created. Please let us toggle them on or off with a key bind.

Yeah, it's been raised many times and I don't think you'll find any disagreement with the idea of a toggle to optionally turn the orbital lines on or off at will in-game.

It is a HUD, after all.

I'm not sure that they're a function of the HUD. I say this because all of the orbital lines were visible to me through a dirty great hole in my canopy a couple of nights ago.

There is another very long thread regarding this issue with almost everyone begging for making those lines (at least) optional. Sadly no dev has responded to this yet, as far as I am aware. Let's hope at least a toggle on/off option makes it into the game before Dec 16th.

I am sure FD will implement this for the next build ... they are really nice guys:D and already switched to pre-christmas gift mode;)!

I don't like them either. Most of the time you're flying around in the orbital plane which means the orbits are just lines covering the whole screen. Get rid of them completely and let us open a display showing a 3D representation of the current solar system, similar to what was possible in previous games but maybe implemented as a floating screen in the cockpit.

They are a function of your navigation computer, and only display if you have Cartography data on that particular system. If you have none, there are no lines, until you either scan that system, or purchase the data.

The lines are already either on or off right now, based on this cartography data, so a toggle should not be too difficult to implement.

there should be an option to turn all HUD/orbital lines etc off for screenshot purposes, there's absolutely no reason not to do this. they've created a beautiful world why not let people show it off?

Yep! I agree wholeheartedly. They have created a beautiful world, let us enjoy it in its uncluttered glory. The "beautiful world" point also makes me realise that we cant see half the beauty in the ships as well because we cant see the exteriors.

Take care... Azzy

Agree: Orbit lines on/off toggle

Agree: HUDs should be color selectable, I mean really, my keyboard and mouse NOW can do it with millions of colors

I agree with the break of immersion but still think they add value. For most of the time when I am SC'ing they are useful for navigating round a system.

At the moment they feel a little like a half-way stall. I would rather they are either off OR a projection/overlay like the rest of the HUD (ethereal glow, hanging in front of the cockpit glass sort of thing). At the moment it *feels* more like the lines are actually "out there" with the planets, stars and moons. I'd rather have (the choice of) all data and something that looks obviously like an artifice and pilot aid or nothing (turned off).

(Obviously the ability to customise this would be nice too but hey I'm flying around the Milky Way in a spaceship so you better not be taking this as a complaint...)
