ED feed watcher V 4.0 Beta

click the image to open a larger version in a new tab
As you can see from the picture FD Forum Watcher now has two frames, a large left frame containing the forums and a smaller frame to the right containing the last two posts in each of the public Elite Dangerous forums.

the latest posts column if fed by the forums RSS feeds and set to open links within the main frame so it's a self contained browsing experience.

please note that although the latest posts column is self updating it is dependant on the Elite stories server to request new data as well as the FD forums to make it available. this may cause some delay so if you want to insure you view the latest posts always click the new post link at the top of the page/app.

Please be aware that this service is provided 'as is' without any warenty, usage is entirly at your own risk and no resposability will be taken for loss or damage resulting from its usage. this service may be withdrawn from public use without notice, reason or explanation.

Very-very interesting, thank you !

I have a question about was how a right-hand column....
As I understand it, there appear new topics in order of their creation...
It-would be better to watch the new messages in the forum threads

at the moment they appear 2 by two in sections, i will be looking into ordering them by date but only when I add tabs to the column for each section as if you just watch the new topics from the new posts link it's easy to miss posts - as has recently been pointed out.

Announcing version 4.0

Update: Announcing version 4.0 - Lave Radio Edition.

to use this version update your shortcut to reflect the new page, its Id has now changed to 36.

a few changes in this version:

Added: Lave Radio feed Full integration. onload the page now populates a third iframe with the latest episode of the Lave Radio Podcast ready to play.

Added: button to load Lave Radio's RSS feed in the right side frame

Added: Lave Radio banners to the player/rss feed header - clicking either opens the Lave Radio home page in a new window/tab.

Fixed bug where top nav disappeared when clicking a new post arrow

Added: better compatibility added for Safari users - everything sort of works now although there are still a few issues to iron out.

I want my money back!

I used the service and posted a drabble - then discovered that I hadn't removed a word properly and it was 101 words, so I tried to edit the post. Every time I tried to edit it, Igot the message that I did not have authorisation to perform that action.

The forum recognised thatit was my pots (the edit option was available) but wouldn't (won't) let me edit the original post. :(

strange, what browser are you using it with as I've been editing posts through it since day one.

Edit just to prove it - Google Chrome ;)

Cool stuff AndyB thanks, Just one question how often does the side panel update?

Wellll... until i saw this topic it was all set on default at 3600 seconds but i just adjusted it to 900, I'll see how the server handles it and may reduce it still further.

EDit: it also depends on how quickly the forums update their RSS feeds

My thoughts about the possible functions of the page.
Header at the top and bottom of the basement (and certainly the right field) unnecessary.
Maybe you can move a header buttons in some floating div with buttons, such as in this picture made social button. Only instead of the social buttons - hot links forum.

A tape of the latest news and podcasts tape lavas radio show when you hover over their icon.

that sounds like a good idea to me, looking at the forum page there is enough room to fit a floating menu without it getting in the way - should be easy enough to do as well - i even know the perfect example to base it on, the Fish eye menu all i need do is add a title/alt atribute that calls the content of the rss feed onmouseover (and change the images) and/or has a flyout panel with the info on.

my biggest problem right now is the Lave Radio feed, if you call an mp3 into a frame the content type defaults to video - you can see the result if you click tune in off the feed panel, because video leaves space above it while audio gives you just the player when you call a feed in from the menu it drops the player down.

I've got round this by creating a page on my site that calls the last item posted by link and wraps it in an audio tag before loading it to the frame when you visit the app page and floating the banner and feed link over the top of the frame so it's always in view.

I'm currently in the process of separating out the page from the rest of the site to install it on it's own server with it's own db as the host it's on only gives you one and what with everything else i'm running on there its starting to get a little crowded.

still got a lot to do on the main site before i'll have time so it may be a few weeks but all the scripts are there ready to install.

once that's done i'll be opening development up to the community via the login/membership features of the CMF (modx revo) - the idea will be to use a blank template and then call in the various elements of the page with template variables so they can be set individually, right down to the css classes/background colors.

if it's done right and uses a bit of check box magic the hope is to produce something that people can configure the way they want it, save the settings for it and have it be accessible with no more than 2 clicks next time they return.
