Rumours about having to pay for an "Expansion pass"?

To be honest when I saw they announced 5 additional ships and that people with beta access will get free access to one of them I kind of assumed the other 4 would cost real money - I don't know if there has been official clarification but my guess is once the 25 pledged ships are in game (and that may take some time as we have what 13 at the moment?) then pretty shortly after you will see five rather nice ships in the shop and instead of paying £10 for a chrome viper paint job perhaps access to each ship will cost say £5 or £15 for access to them all (though perhaps you then still have to buy them with in game credits as well and the access is what is charged to stop accusations of pay to win)

buying a ship would be classed as Pay To Win...and from what I gather the chances of this happening are almost next to nothing.

I just heard an ugly rumour about the possible existence of an expansion pass down the line.

Paraphrasing;
You are to buy an expansion pass in order to be able to land on planets, have FPS fights, etz..
The 60 euro you paid for beta gets you the launch game, anything added after that costs extra,
as they will be considered expansions.

Just how much of this is true? :(
If this doesn't turn out to be complete bullpucky, I'll drop the game right now and cut my loss..
I'm having a hard time believing it though, it would be a bad PR move to ask even more money for an already expensive game.

I'm going to be harsh here.... I've said it before and I'll say it again; You should have done your research shouldn't you?

You wouldn't buy a car without first checking out any conditions or additional requirements... same goes for any purchase... You decide to chuck your money at something without first checking things out then that's your own fault.

Those of us who backed at the KickStarter were taking a risk and this has paid off... You, took a risk of not researching what you're buying... That's your own lookout...

Tough... cookies... frankly!

Funniest. Post. Ever. :D

Dumbest response ever.

Yes, I expect more when I pay more, this is how life works.
I paid for front row seats, so I am allowed to expect a good show.
But sofar its been a mediocre experience, nothing really special going on.
I bought into the game with a higher entry fee expecting it would help them to eventually grow into the shoes of a fancy new generation space game.
Instead I got X3 Reunion with updated graphics and a promise that they will allow me to give them more money in the future to get the game up to speed.
Paying extra AND up front got me the same sandwich as everybody else who will join in after release. I'm somehow supposed to be grateful for this?

Early access games shouldn't cost more than a finished retail game in the first place.
Part of the price you pay is the time you spend shooting bugs for them.

Can't find it now but I think they said that items such as ships and ship upgrades would not be obtainable via RMT.
If they were then it would pretty much lean towards a pay to win model and not one I would favour

Oh come on, you're just throwing hyperbole around. You still haven't actually explained why it isn't worth it.
Like I said, because it is simplistic and featureless. Nothing you do affects anything in the galaxy. Trading never goes beyond "Grab cargo, jump, unload cargo" in systems and stations that you can't distinguish from each other. The factions are just a name in a menu. Missions never go beyond "Grab cargo, jump, unload cargo" or "Get mission, shoot guy, get money". It's telling when the previous game in the franchise had more depth and content on release.

There actually is a game ... Battlecruiser Millenium ... which actually in one version meanwhile is free thanks to the Generosity of its creator, Derek Smart.

But it is a bad comparison actually, considering the fact that BC: M only contains a relatively small number of systems (not the whole Milky Way) and its graphics cannot be compared to E: D
Yes, there's also Precursors, SWG, and a couple others.

But most of these are hardly "space sims" to begin with, and even then, most were pretty bad. Those things are an incredibly rare occurrence in video games, even more so in space sims.

I still don't get how can people "expect" planetary landings and FPS combat to be part of what is defined as a "space sim".

It hasn't been released yet.

You get what it says you're getting in the product description. This is how life works.

There's no such thing as "shouldn't". What you really mean is "I won't want it to cost more". In which case, don't pay and don't play. It was your choice. You weren't forced.

....

And you would have gotten more (i.e. all Expansions for free) if you would have spent 80 GBP (or higher) for this.

It actually still is announced on the Kickstarter Page:
https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1461411552/elite-dangerous

Pledge £80 or more
...

Digital Download Pack. This includes a single digital download of the game, and any expansions, and all the other rewards above except those requiring physical delivery.

Not FDs problem if you spent just 60 € = ~45-50 GBP

I'm just hoping we get the product description at this point, not really worried or concerned with the rest yet.

Compared to what other people backed your 60 euros gets you back row seats. So many more people, in the tens of thousands, have paid more than you. No one is treated differently...no one has more VIP status than anyone else. It doesn't matter how much you backed.
The vast majority researched the game, looked at you tube vids and reviews.
Only kickstarter backers were really backing blindfolded.

I pay almost top whack for car tax, and petrol due to poor mpg, therefore because running my car costs more than yours more of my money goes into building new roads and road maintenance.
Do you think I should have a priority lane just for me? Because I do...it's disgraceful they don't *rabble* *rabble*

I'm hoping all this emptyness in gamma is just a placeholder for the real content that will come with release, though I suspect what you see is what you get. If the "missions" we have now are just simplistic mechanics tests to be used for a giant slew of events released once the game drops, it wouldnt be so bad I guess, but LunarJetman's post sums up my gripe about paying 60 euros for this pretty accurately. The game is nothing spectacular sofar. Just a plain simple space sim. I bought into the game BECAUSE of the talk about planet landings and FPS battles. Everything else is just old rehash.

why shouldnt they charge for an expansion? most expansions do cost money? even in mmos like rift, wow etc.?

exactly there will need to be work put into any expansion - ships, landing on planets, walking round stations, landing ships on other ships, hostile boarding of ships etc etc... there is no monthly subscription so unless people expect them to do the work for free then how else other than paid expansions do they expect development beyond launch to happen?

Yes, there are people who pumped thousands into the game, im not comparing myself to them.
I am comparing myself to people who will be paying half of what I paid, and get exactly the same thing as I.

And you pay more for your car, to hopefully have a nicer ride. Thats your return for paying extra.
If you were paying for a limo stretch and driving the same Kia as everybody else, THEN your comparison would match.

Tons of free MMOs out there, and even Pay-once games like guild wars 2 get monthly free expansions without subscription.
There are plenty games that work on a "pay once, we'll make money selling cosmetic extras to pay for it" business model.
The whole "ED has no subscription fee so fork over the cash" argument is completely invalid.

This threads doing well isn't it? if you cant make a constructive post then please don't post.

To the OP.

Since the very start of the kickstarter the information on how Frontier wanted the purchase model to go was clearly stated on the main kickstarter page. It's never been any kind or rumour.

https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1461411552/elite-dangerous

I've quoted the relevant topic.

From the ED kickstarter Page

Will I have to pay for updates, or expansions, or new content?
Some new features and content will be paid for, especially those that build significantly on the game. If you have pledged to £90 tier or higher then any expansions or updates are free.

So unfortunately if you pledged under this level you will have to decide if you want to pay an extra amount for the additional content. you will still be able to play the game and will receive free updates for the core game.

The amount each expansion will cost has not been announced yet so any figures being mentioned are speculation at this point.

Thanks everyone and please keep it civil. :)
