Rumours about having to pay for an "Expansion pass"?

Beta backers do get expansions free.... Me and my friend paid 100 of our lovely pounds to get beta access and fd also said with that we get fee expansions fo life....
:D:D

Beta backers who bought the lifetime expansion pack, no? (I happen to be one of them, BTW. €60 for Beta access and €40 for the lifetime pass.)

guild wars has always charged for expansions.

so youd rather have p2w ships for sale rather then pay for expansions???

That wasn't his point. He was stating that when he paid for early access it should have covered the cost of all future development, expansions and infrastructural costs. I think the consequences of such entitlement would be p2w or subscriptions.

Off topic but I do wonder if planetary landings will be any good. I can't shake the impression that it will involve travelling slowly around largely barren planets. Sort of like SC but with mountains. Hopefully this impression turns out to be wrong.

One would expect this to be dependant on your piloting skills ... i.e. how close you manage to land with respect to your target :D

That said ... it will be interesting to see how we will be able to land ... VTOL style, or with a long level surface being needed for start and takeoff

I paid £100 (~€126) for Beta and Expansion Pass, and all I got was a lousy basic Sidewinder and 100 credits

WHERE IS MY VIP TREATMENT?!?

I can't believe people are still complaining about this. It was all fully documented and prominent for everyone to see. I paid for Premium Beta £100+ and I get free access to all future expansions. So I'm happy. But really these people who paid for Beta access, you got to play the game way before release. £35 for the game +£15 for the Beta/Gamma Access. Bargain. Is it a full game, YES it is. You get a fully simulated galaxy with Trading, Mining, Piracy, Assassinations, Multiplayer, Exploration and coming very soon and for free, Capitol Ships and their inherent battlezones and missions. Expanded story based missions which are fed by and feed into the fabric of the galactic political systems and factions. I mean come on that's a full experience for anyone. The extra packs have to be paid somehow and I for one don't want monthly subscriptions if possible or pay 2 win mechanics or Pay for every little sodding extra in the outfitting shop either. God forbid they do a Star Citizen and charge for the ships that you can't even fly, just look at in a hangar! and we're talking $1000 for some of those!!!!! madness and you had to buy the game too! Not that there's much to play at the moment, so think yourself lucky and thank Frontier for all the stuff you have right now, with very little outlay. ;)
Even if I wasn't a Premium Beta Kickstarter backer I would still have paid for Beta access and I would gladly pay for the expansions.

I'll say it again, as I've mentioned elsewhere this is ELITE not X-Rebirth or EVE Online or Mass Effect or even Star Citizen or World of Warcraft, its a true open world game that engages the player to not only play in this galaxy but to LIVE in this galaxy. If thats not what you want (I can't imagine why you wouldn't) then fine go elsewhere.

You had a free bar on Saturday, quit complaining ;) :D

Yes my head was paying for it on Sunday :D

I know you weren't Titus. ;) Great videos by the way :) Awesome stuff. Did you see the recent Black Hole video? You should defo find one and use it in another of your vids (with the Interstellar soundtrack ha ha) :)

Wait what... you have to pay for... oh never mind, already bought it. :p

I'm waiting until 17th December before I start complaining about not having access to any expansions though.
No expansion pack the day after release is simply "immersion breaking" for me. :D

Those who don't want planetary landing or first person mode will be happy about this, so at least a small section of the player base will be 'happy'.

Really old news, probably someone trying to create a ruckus over nothing again

Beats me, but you can ask Arenanet how they do it.
People seem to keep hammering on subscription being more expensive, but there are plenty games that make due without it.
Guild Wars 2 has been free of subscriptions and expansions since the start over 2 years ago, and its been getting new content monthly.
So a pay-once game without subscriptions or expansion crud certainly belongs in the realm of possibilities.

GW2 isn't really a 'pay once' game. They have the "cash for stash" option which they do very well out of financially.

Okay, you can pay once and then never buy new outfits, weapons, craftables and other items. Also, there hasn't really been a MAJOR expansion for GW2 in the manner that they did for GW1. You can expect to pay for that when it comes out. Oh, before you comment that I know nothing about GW2... I've been there since the early Beta versions as well.

I don't think you should be starting a thread where you announce to everyone that you didn't actually understand what you were buying.

You are only highlighting your short comings, not Frontiers.

Sorry to derail thread...

Thank you!

Yes! I did see it - sadly I've been away from my PC and won't be returning home until tonight where I'll start with that basic Sidewinder (I managed to log in to create my basic save - starting in Bose Station in... well I don't know where :D

I'd actually like to play the game for a bit :) But I'll keep my eyes out for lovely stuff on the way. I'll probably get the next video out before the New Year for sure.

Dumbest response ever.

Yes, I expect more when I pay more, this is how life works.
I paid for front row seats, so I am allowed to expect a good show.
But sofar its been a mediocre experience, nothing really special going on.
I bought into the game with a higher entry fee expecting it would help them to eventually grow into the shoes of a fancy new generation space game.
Instead I got X3 Reunion with updated graphics and a promise that they will allow me to give them more money in the future to get the game up to speed.
Paying extra AND up front got me the same sandwich as everybody else who will join in after release. I'm somehow supposed to be grateful for this?

Early access games shouldn't cost more than a finished retail game in the first place.
Part of the price you pay is the time you spend shooting bugs for them.

You should have bought the Mercenary Pack and waited till 16th December then. You bought into the beta with the pack which gives you free stuff others buying after release don't get.

I paid it expecting to be treated like a VIP because I backed them before seeing the results.

You got exactly what was advertised when you paid your €60. Beta access and a copy of the released core game. And the mercenary Eagle thing and some skins. And a discount on your ship insurance.

If you wanted life time expansions at no extra cost then you needed the lifetime expansion pass.

If you wanted to be treated like a VIP there were several Kickstarter tiers that enabled that. They cost significantly more than the beta access or even lifetime expansion pass but they gave you access to a bar with white leather sofas at the Premier event (amongst other perks).

I bought the lifetime expansion pass......Its been common knowledge since the kickstarter........All updates free ....but Add on packs ( Planetary Landings ) would be charged for unless you bought the pass..
I thought the expansion pass was well worth the money....And if it never comes so be it.....I love the game as the way it is just like the original Elite....Addons are a bonus as far as im concerned :)

P2W ships are not cosmetic.
Paintjobs, bobbleheads, fuzzy dice, engine colors, different computer voices, different suits. Those are cosmetic.
Thats how Guildwars 2 has been earning money since launch, all while adding tons of new content without charge.
They just sell a bunch of shiny armor and fancy effect toys and give you new areas and quests in return.

I just think its unusual for a beta to cost more than retail is all.
Other beta/early access games offer you a discount in return for your help hunting for bugs.
Would have been nice if frontier said "You were here for the start, you can stay till the end".
But I guess we'll see just how much we get for 60 euros when release time comes.

Planetary landings on elite 2 where spectacular so I expect the same for ed today.

Considering the improvement in technology I would expect the planetary landing in Elite Dangerous to be even better than what they were for Elite 2 and First Encounters and I'm sure they will be considerably better.

I am comparing myself to people who will be paying half of what I paid

How about comparing yourself to the people that paid twice of what you paid? 120€ was the price for the premium beta including the expansion pass.

So why should you get what they get?

and get exactly the same thing as I.

They don't. They couldn't play the beta and have no acces to gamma. They don't get a permit to Sol regardless of federation faction standing. They don't get an insurance discount. They don't get one of 5 new ships for free.

... They don't get a permit to Sol regardless of federation faction standing. ...

That´s actually not true.
According to the announcements "normal players" can get access to Sol if the have a rather high standing within the Federation (whereas Beta-Backers gain access to Sol from the beginning on)
They can´t, however, get access to the "Founders World"-System .... this one is Early Backer-Exclusive
