Is the Sol system unfinished?

Is the Sol system unfinished?

Jupiter looks all wrong, bland and uninteresting to me for a start. The rings of Saturn look like husks of what I am used to from photographs. Io was unrecognizable and nothing like the beautiful Io we see in the published pictures. etc.

Also I would have liked some unique space stations and constructions in the Sol system. Something to set it apart from what we have already seen.

Earth looks great though, although I really, really deplore the fact that there is no sign of habitation at all. I mean the night side of the planet should light up like a Christmas tree.

I think beta 3.9 mentioned that Earth and Mars were added to Sol, which I took as meaning the rest probably weren't ready yet.

I remember an early newsletter showing the different city aesthetics from space
From memory ...Federation being more square, Imperial circular and Alliance a combination of shapes.

Right now all the planets seem pristine and uninhabited.

Yes I distinctly remember that too.
It might seem A relatively insignificant graphical addition to the game, but it will make a huge difference for the player's perception. It will make the civilized part of the universe come alive... feel alive.

Check out Scott Manley's you tube vid he explains the possible stripping of Saturns rings over the next thousand years or so.

No, this is absolutely normal! Live on earth now belong to the past, where everybody killed each other, destruct live and nature on earth... so it's no a result of what we did decades ago... no more lights, that's what's earth looking for real now.

I suspect the planets need another art pass or three. Considering they probably want the Earth from space to match what they generate on the surface for planetary landings, I suspect that will get some serious attention at some point, as with the others.

The solar system looks to be very much a wip, having said that Mars looks amazing terraformed, I'm sure FD will make the various astronomical bodies look like their real life counterparts, I hope they will add a few extra moons and generally "busy" up the system (capital ship dockyards etc)

Oh and still waiting on a specular map for the ocean planets, that blue texture sure looks flat ;)

Concur, textures of Earth are largely a placeholder. You can see the "brushstrokes" especially in the coastline of the Mediterranean side of Spain and the whole African continent.
Still a very much pleasure to fly by.

The Moon looks positively impressive.

It's only pretty recently that they started overhauling all of the planets, expect more polish I think as time goes on :)

Yes I saw that video and something just occurred to me: Could the Feds have used the ice in Saturn's rings to terraform Mars?
That would be a good explanation I think, because there is an awful lot of water on Mars..

Forgetting about the textures on the planets. What about the economy? It seems totally dead in Sol, the only things exported are bio-waste and hydrogen fuel (both which will net you less than 100 credits per tonne profit, and that's as a crazy best case scenario).

The whole place seems to be starving also as all foods are major imports. A total lack of any decent ship upgrades (nothing but the most basic stuff) or ships (Mars High only had sidewinders for sale). Missions being given in Abraham Lincoln about Nationalists wanting weapons to overthrow the government.

Quite depressing really, given that it is the capital of the Federation. I wonder if it's possible to improve the situation there.

There will be little if any reason to go there if it doesn't change.

It makes sense that the system is stripped for anything of value though, given the time that has passed. That is why expansion is critical in the final analysis. As an administrative center, you tend to export bureaucracy and culture, which doesn't take so much cargo space, all in all. The seat of the Government is just there to make sure more planets can be depleted, and will import anything needed for continued existence. I don't see the problem. Although they could potentially import stuff, and process it that way. But if it can be done closer to the actual resources, why should they.

Everything in the game is now absolutely final, and what you see is how it will remain for the next 15-20 years FD is done and wont touch it again. sorry

Still. It perks my curiosity if the famed background simulation could account for an improvement of the system through lots of people doing business there (mass importing food for example).

What would happen to the system if the demand for food is met? Would some other demands pop-up or does the system just stagnate even further (e.g. no imports at all)? If new imports or exports did come out of the situation, what would they be likely to be?

I think that with an an administrative center, there should be plenty of missions dealing with politics and intrigue, more so than everywhere else. Like dealing with spies, political enemies, defectors, black market items for the overly rich, maybe someone needs to "disappear", special passengers with a past they want to hide, the usual space opera stuff, but on acid. ;)
