Mintaka!

My jump range is just a fraction above 20Ly, which I would generally advise to aim for when going that far out. There were areas where I already had to make detours of several systems to be able to keep going; with a smaller jump range, those detours might get longer and longer.

And I haven't yet collected the money for the data. I haven't played yesterday due to the server issues, my plan is to visist M78 first and then head to Sol and sell the data there. :)

Ah poop, thats what I was affraid of, I think I have to go back and grind me a A4 fsd. :)
On the other hand, what do I have to lose...

About the map data. I wasn't able to read my data at a station yesterday. The service timed out. Dunno if it had something to do with the server, or with the amount of data I have is already too much to read before it times out. So, considering the fact you have 4 times the amount of data, brase yourself ;)

Before I will head out to M78, I dived further into the Orion Nebula:

One star picked my interest because it appears very bright on the map plus it was smack in the middle of the nebula:

I was not disappointed:

This deep in, the Milky Way can be seen through a red haze:

Even deeper inside:

As it happens, the darkest parts of the nebula are aligned just so that they almost completely occlude both Magellanic Clouds:

And now, into the deepest, darkest part:

Llittle can be seen from the rest Orion Nebula, here the dust blocks most of the light:

The Milky Way no longer tinted red, but dimmed considerably by all the dark dust:

That bright star in the previous picture? A red dwarf with an asteroid belt in a very tight orbit:

But there are also planets. One is covered in ice...

... another one is similar to Saturn...

But the star of the system is not the star (pun absolutely intended), but this beautiful little world:

The perfect place for a break before I finally leave the Orion Nebula behind. :)

I haven't looked at the pictures yet, as I'm about to get there as well. Once I'm there I'll have a look at them myself. I reached Mintaka an hour ago. I mentioned having a 14 ly jump drive, but it's 16.8 unladen, and I don't carry anything, not even weapons. 16.8 LY jump distance haven't brought me any problems yet. I hope I can keep it this way. I haven't spotted the black hole yet, but I'll get there :)

Have you been past Betelgeuse as well? You almost pass it when you got to Mintaka. Its... big :)

*edit*

Hah! I thought I was looking for an accretion disk, but its a gravitational lens, awesome :)
I still haven't found it though. My scanner doesn't pick it up as it is a short range one...

With my 20Ly jump range, there does not seem to be any viable jump route from the Orion Nebula towards M78. While stars are tightly clustered within the nebula and its immediate vicinity, further away they thin out and distances become bigger than that. M78 is cancelled, therefore.

As a consolation, I have made more images from my tour around the outside of the Orion Nebula on my search for a jump route. Enjoy!

Instead of M78, I am going to visit another VIP on the way back to Sol:

Well, I'm getting a little worried here as well. I made it to Witch head, but only just. I was not able to enter the Nebula itself. So now I am closing in on Orion, but things are not looking good. I was able to make a few jumps only just, while the route planner said I wasn't able to jump. If I was able to make just because I was low on fuel, then I am going to have serious trouble finding the same route back.

I found the black hole in Mintaka. The visual effects are just awesome. If you get in the neighborhood of the hole, the world around you goes whirl. I really could not have dreamed it would be like this. Yesterday evening the misses got bored of me after the third saying something, but getting nothing in return but a vage smile, not even directed at her...

I'm glad the universe works, really works. The rest is just, pft.

I was scooping fuel at 45C :D

Your pictures look great, again thanks for this thread. I would of repped it thrice, but I can't :(

I made it to Mintaka yesterday evening. Wanted to get to the nebulas but I think my range may be too short (19.2Ly) with a full tank o' gas. Should've stripped the weapons out of my cobra. Think I will head home (Already visited betelgeuse). Might pop by Rigel if it's not too much of a detour

Did you try to jump to a non-restricted system and then again attempt to go to the restricted one? I found that I the restriction disappeared after one jump to a different system, so it probably was just some server hiccup.

No its definitely restricted, it says so in the Gal Map. (Requires Witch's Reach Permit)

Nice stuff. I like it. One thing bothered me though. I could not see clearly - is the skybox lensed but not the starfield?

I don't understand where you see a distinction. Everything seen through the lensing volume around the black hole (even more so if you are inside that volume) is affected.

I think he only looked at the screenshots, as these only show the skybox getting whirled. But indeed, your whole surrounding goes whirl when you approach the black hole.

Ah cool. To explain, when I watched the video, the contrast made it difficult to see the starfield. I thought I could see stars just passing the black hole normally, must have been space dust or something on the windscreen.

Get them to do your windscreen next time your in the station. :D Good!!

I've been having a similar problem crossing the Pegasi Sector. Some of them are fine, but others give a 'can't connect to server' error on coming out of hyperspace. Interestingly, i get no stutters in the witchspace animation when trying to reach systems that crash ... ones that i can get to i get a few seconds of jerkiness.

This *might* be a bug they have fixed in 1.02 concerning Stellar Forge issues!!!

Ah, 1.02 is comming, cool :)
I had the same bug 2 days ago, but yesterday morning things were fine. Yesterday evening it started again for a couple of minutes, after that I was able to jump all the way from Mintaka to Orion without one disconnection. But indeed, I hope they fixed that one.

One thing though, https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?t=65652...
To be honest, I've haven't noticed this while I was at Mintaka, nor have I noticed it worked correctly. So he might be on to something.
