Am i the only one conscious of this?

Guys ! I want ED to be majorly successful. But im concerned ...

Elite - 1984 - possibly one of the most influential games to help shape the future of 3D gaming and space simulation.

Elite Dangerous - Kickstarters most successful computer game launch - clearly on the back of the thousands of 40 somethings seeing the opportunity to relive their youth.

nine days before the official launch of what many say will be the leader in space simulation/trading.... a feat of programming engineering and a game with thousands and thousands of ks and beta backers.

So why is it when i walk around town, in none of the game shops can I see a single mention of Elite Dangerous ?

It sadden's me!

Where's the marketing?

Are there going to be retail versions for the game shops to sell, if not then there is no reason for them to advertise it. I assume the only boxed copies are those for the kickstarter backers at the relevant tier, and those that wish to purchase that upgrade on the store.

I get the impression that Download was more the proposed sale plan... since it is a Online game one can assume you have net access to order. Boxed version just got announed a week ago.

I think gaming shops are dead as far as PC purchases are concerned, I never go to them and everything is online, consoles are also moving this way. The cost in producing physical media is then saved, as well as the reduced selling price to retail, whether these prices will be passed onto the consumer or pocketed by the producer remains to be seen. You can do quality research online through various sources and peoples reviews, as well as purchases from your armchair for a better price. This is not me being lazy but simply a more efficient and cheaper option. It's just evolution of the games industry and retail for that matter, and its reflected in real life by the death of the high street shop (online not the only reason for this).

Also Elite has no offline gaming right, buying a hard copy could potentially create a conflicting view with this game strategy.

Certainly it's all online at the moment, FD seem to have their own plan. Only they know what their sales are like, but guess that they are happy with the way it is going at the moment.

It makes sense for FD to sell through their own store. While there's a small customer friction for the initial purchase, once they have your details its smooth sailing to impulse buying skins etc.

Not a negative comment if anyone construes it that way. Think what FD's done is pretty slick from a company that had nothing in place at the start of the kickstarter.

The OP does bring up a good point. I don't bump into any hype/marketing unless I seek it out. It's not listed as one of the major upcoming titles with IGN for example. There's not a whole heckuva lot discussion of it with PC Gamer. Granted, it's not out yet... But it does seem pretty quiet out there....

Its only available on the Elite store for the present future. So I dont think Amazon or Tesco would be bothering to give them free advertising. :)

Putting it on Steam would help sales. Especially with almost zero marketing.

You're dead right I raise a good point, I've worked in marketing for years and I know that in addition to online marketing (which Ive seen very little of) you go into the shops, or you go onto relative media !

"Game" - a company still flourishing on the high street, which does still sell PC games, has sold games that are "steam only" or "download only" or "online only" and the fact that Elite Dangerous may well only be an online game, does not justify it not being pushed via the high street.

The only other places I've seen it mentioned are when I'd sought to find information myself.

"High street PC game sales are dead" - No they are not. Shops still sell PC games and if your game is not going to be featured on Steam/Amazon, why should you not go to the high street ?

"It an online only game" - so? - I've bought many online only games where you buy the box from a shop 1st.

"You can research a game before you buy it online, thats what i do" - Yeah if your psychic - How does one become aware of the game in the first place ?

My point is this.....

ED has taken 30 years to come around and on the back of a game that was, let's be honest with ourselves, a major bench mark in computer gaming history. I backed it the second i found out about it, as have many thousands of others, because we all want it to be a humongous success once more.

I want to play ED for year to come and that's only going to happen if people know about it.

I heard about the game on EvE Forums and wanted to learn more about it. I've never seen mention of it on the gamer websites I frequent beforehand. (Didn't mean to say Voldemorts (EvE) name in a post!) :)

Its only available in the Elite store though, all money direct to frontier. It would be like Game telling you to go shop somewhere else.
