Make me a believer!

I have played over 20 MMOs, and I wish I was kidding about that.

From anything such as 8 dragons to Warhammer age of reckoning online, to Dark Age of Camelot to "The Crew".

As for space MMOs, played both Eve Online (Which I was not impress on their navigation system) and Star Trek Online which I was not impress when they went for a very Pay 2 win model.

But I digress. I want someone to convince me of the good and the bad (since there is no such thing as perfection) of why I should pre-order this game. I have no previous experience of Elite games and not a real fan of "hardcore rules", but do love PvP. And the PvE exploration sounds real exciting.

I apologize in advance if this sounds as a rant or a troll, but I am looking for incentives. I, unfortunately, have my fair share of games I have played just to be disappointed and I just want my next game to be a good experience. Hopefully people can understand that.

Thank you :)

To be honest, advice on the forums probably isn't the most reliable.

I'd suggest loading up some of the YouTube videos out there and deciding if you like what you see, combined with the narrative and scope of the game.

I'd suggest the same, check out Lets Play videos and such. Also make sure they are beta 3 or higher, the older versions still have that terrible old UI in them...

Also, the game is best played with a HOTAS of course, but nevertheless (I do it myself, I still lack a HOTAS :( ) very well playable if you take your time to setup proper controls for keyboard and mouse.

Totally agree.

Apologises if this comes over as offensive but... you sound like you don't want to do the research yourself. Is that so you can blame someone else if you do get the game and then don't like it?

The only way you can know if you will like the game is to research it yourself. Go to YouTube, watch some of the videos people have made about Elite Dangerous and listen to their comments.

If you like what you see... buy the game.

If you don't like what you see... don't buy it.

If you like PVP this game is certainly not for you. Though it's allowed, I've been playing for about two weeks and haven't found another person yet. The forums are full of complaints about when players get killed they call it griefing and rant like children about how they had their toys taken away.

This isn't an MMO, if you're looking for one I think you'll be disappointed. It'll (eventually) have basic funtionality as you'd expect from an online game (chats etc) but it'll never be like a traditional MMO.
.
What it IS though is a great game of making it from a tiny little ant with zero assets to a major badass by trading/combat/exploration/missions/mining however you want. It's not quite as sandboxy as Eve Online but I still honestly think you'll like it!
.
And if you're on the fence about it just wait a couple of weeks for the release, you'll have plenty of Reviews to read then :)

Nah, dont buy it. Its so easy to find youtube videos and read the forums and you dont want even to do that... I guess you would be all over the forums screaming: "the game is broken", as it needs a fair amount of your own research. This game is for people who fell in love with it simply by watching a video, that struck a hardcore sci-fi fan string... if you dont love it by now, the game is NOT for you.

I have to agree with the others - better watch some youtube let's plays and stuff first.
If your main thing is space and space related games/mmos - you will probably like Elite a lot. But if you looking for just another mmo - than better look at the gameplay footage first.
Either way we would love to have you with us in Elite universe. :)

i say go ahead and buy it without really knowing what it is, but expect it to be something else. we always need another hate thread complaining about how this wasnt EVE or warcRaft and FD defrauded them.

I would suggest watching some YouTube vids on it. Scott Manley's vids are pretty good.

I totally agree on another post, where forums is not the place to go to find information. But a wiseman never listens to only 1 version of the facts. Youtube videos are great, but they show you want they want to show you. Most reviewers either barely plays the game or do so with hundreds of hours which makes it hard to get the info you need. Some have bias opinions because their channel profits comes first.

At least in the forums, I am not dealing with any of those factors.

And with that said...

Thank you Jexter for giving me an honest answer. Eve Online entire system was a bit clunky to me, I did try on 2 attempts to like the game, I mean, to explore space, who doesn't like that? But too many little things on Eve didn't attract my style.

I did stumble upon a thread that would be a downer for me; no 3rd person. Now, I imagine this game possibly support 3 monitors? For real immersion, I like to be able to see my sides, but I don't see the point of buying a bigger desk just so I could get 2 extra monitors. So, yes, I like to play 3rd person. IRL, our viewing angle is beyond 160 degrees, not cockpit view 90 degrees, 3rd person is the only camera angle that somewhat gives you perspective.

So is 3rd person something that will be introduce? Because, like the offline refund request I been seeing, lack of that angle could potentially be a deal breaker, regardless how amazing the game would end up to be :(.

There is lots of combat if you want, but very little PvP level because of the vast size of the actual game. It exists to any and all. Solo mode takes the human players off your screen but otherwise it is the same game. This game is about growth and exploration. And it's a real-time galaxy. It is VERY realistic, but has some teething issues and most games do.

To be honest with you the Kickstarter was kind-of rubbish. It seemed rushed, as if someone at Frontier had just woken up that morning and decided to do it. But I bought into it anyway because it's The Braben making a space game. I was surprised they're bringing it in within 18 months though, so I'm assuming there are a lot of things on the drawing board that are going to come over the next 18 months or more.

If no 3rd person view is a deal breaker for you then don't buy this game. Your obviously not into simulators and this is not really an MMO in the classic sense. It requires arcade skills, it plays like a sim on hardcore mode though the ships are easy to fly you get no 3rd person view as your playing as the pilot. You don't level up skills, it takes practice fighting, exploring and trading to go up the ranks. These are purely based on your own abilities rather than synthetic RPG mechanics.

There are lots of players around the fed space I have no idea what that other chap is on about. I see hundreds of players and even bump into the odd one in Empire space hundreds of LY away from Fed space.

So to sum up, if your asking then I don't think it'll suit you. Some of us have been waiting 30 years for this game.

You haven't seen anyone? You sure your playing the 'open' game I see hundreds of players around the start systems. Sometimes so many I have to queue to dock. Where did you start?

"Plays like a sim on hardcore"........lol. What kind of sims are you playing? The only thing that is sim like is the galaxy. The rest is arcade unless you fly without flight assist. Personally, I've never played a hardcore sim where you pushed launch and the next second you were flying along without a care in the world other than trying to figure out the lame galaxy map...lol.

The game is pretty. It has potential, but it's not a hardcore sim by any stretch of the imagination and probably not designed to appeal to the general masses. It's a slow paced, look at the sights, earn a few credits, buy a new ship, earn some credits, look at the sights game. Which is fine as long as that's what you're looking for.

There is an honest answer for you from someone who loves space games and "real sims". Just my 2 cents.

This is not an MMO. Is a massive sigle player online. The universe in which you play is influenced by other players, but you have no tools to play with them. Still, you can kill them.

So:
- no coop;
- no guilds;
- no groups;
- repetitive gameplay;
- grinding.

Still:
- good flying model;
- nice graphics;
- huge galaxy;
- hope for future development...

My advice: don't buy yet. Wait for Feb/March 2015.

"Start systems"? There are no "start systems" mate...

As the game isn't actually OUT yet and we know they have some surprises we should hold off on dissing the game till it IS a game....
However, we already know that many of those features are in design so I would say but now and prepare for later... he just wants you to wait so he can pre-arm a killing tank so you never have a chance ;)

Sorry, I don't understand what you are saying.

we know they have some surprises
No, we know they don't. They said Gamme is feature-definitive. We may receive more ships/stations/missions and we will see the dynamism of the galaxy come alive. But the game remains a single player with PVP until 2015, as Devs told us.

we already know that many of those features are in design so I would say but now and prepare for later
I don't understand this part. Do you mean "buy now and prepare for later"? Well... hell no! He should wait and see what happens later. Everything may happen: a critical failure, a delay in development... or maybe an incredible success and new content coming out early. There's only a way to see and stay safe: not buying.

he just wants you to wait so he can pre-arm a killing tank so you never have a chance ;)
Asd... maybe :p

Or maybe not, since anybody can play in solo (for the OP: it means that you can play in an instance without other players) and join the open play once you have a good ship.

This is not an MMO and for sure it is not EVE from a first person perspective. ;)

Be careful, expectations is a killer. That's how games in general get bad reviews, when people set their expectations really high. Regardless how good the game is. It is the human condition. I have seen 9.5 games get a 6 out of 10 because people were all expecting a 10 out of 10. Just sad :(
