I play the online game, but I would've liked to play my own single player offline version. Others wanted the game specifically for the single player game (and hopefully they'll get a refund). Just because there's a solo online option, doesn't mean that they should be satisfied with that. What they were expecting was something completely different. Something which had been promised to them.

The game still has a single player game. Its just you require an internet connection, so like I said the only ones it should effect are those who have problems with an internet connection. And those I hope all get refunded, and maybe in the future when there internet situation is better they can play then.

Maybe by then the game is finished so it might be a better experience.

Eventually this game will be playable offline anyway. Sooner or later.

Are we allowed to talk about this?
.
Sure, why wouldn't we? We all know what the status is - offline mode isn't feasible for Elite: Dangerous.
.
Think of it this way: I prefer to eat cheddar and sour cream ruffles with a small tub of good sour cream to dip them all in. But I know that doing that would be unhealthy if I did it too often - so I have that as an occasional treat, and use small containers of sour cream. If my favorite brand of sour cream stopped selling small containers - I would be forced to buy large containers which comes with a whole new set of problems like me binging on too much at once, or the larger tub going bad before I get through it all, etc...
.
To me, offline mode was in the same vein - it wasn't very important, but it was a feature that I would sometimes use. Now that option is no longer there - for my part that's fine this game is awesome and I can count on a pretty darn reliable internet connection.
.
Others have different opinions, others feel the same, yet others prefer dos equis, but who and how many?
.
People who prefer to play offline realize they can't - so it's like asking if they like Dominoes, Papa John's, or Pizza Hut when Papa John's doesn't deliver to their house. They still prefer Papa John's but will chose to either drive there to get it, or order from one of the other places instead.
.
People prefer offline, but will play online instead if they wish to play.

Read Virgil Tracey's post above. He gives a good reason as to why an offline game is preferable.
Also read Trinnet's post.

Gonna beat that dead horse some more ehh? Some of you must have been awful children screaming. Can see some screaming for the candy lining the checkout lanes as your Mom tries to cash-out.

Yeah, and it's posts like that which made me add to this thread so that anyone new to it wouldn't think that this is how we all feel. But they should see what I mean when I say that all the hate tended to be from those who didn't care about offline being removed.

There's ranking. Rank is useless in a vacuum. Its only value is in competition or to scare people away. In either case, it's a direct comparison between players.

This makes no sense. The ranking in ED is moot with regards to other players. I could literally be elite in combat trading and exploration without ever interacting with a single other player. So please explain how it is a direct comparison between players?

This conclusion does not follow from the evidence presented.

It's a poll, and from the results so far, about 20% of the people preferred offline mode, but will be just find having to play online instead. There are a few (some 6.6%) where the lack of offline mode will negatively impact them due to connection issues.

There have been some recent polls about that haven't adequately examined everyone's views on the loss of off-line play.

So, here is the question:

How much does the loss of offline play impact you?

What about I play online in solo mode? Do you consider that online?

Like I said, it's a skewed poll. It concentrates on the idea that the reason for wanting offline was all down to connection problems. It wasn't.

Well, we were specifically told not to by the moderators - essentially I'm asking whether that injunction has been lifted.

Oh, I missed that post. Got a link?

Again, not asking for discussion of the merits of the decision or people's opinions on how others will perceive the chance, or whether or not they will recommend the game to a friend. Just simply - what was your preference, how much are you realistically impacted?

I wasnt fussed by the scrapping of offline play but now I am.

It looks like exploits are being massively abused and so I won't feel happy playing open play etc. knowing that the galaxy has a lot of cheats and people starting in positions they simply haven't earned or deserve through fair play.

You can play single player online or in a private group

That wasn't my intent.

You may be interpreting as such (which is reasonable given the lack of info otherwise) but I tried to phrase it to allow for people to express other issues (other than connection ones) without having a poll with a zillion meaningless options.

My response, as an example, is in the form of "I prefer online" and "I occasionally can't connect for various reasons." One of those reasons being - I might not feel like it at the time.

Of course it's not, but some people have a very difficult time wrapping their minds around the concept of a game that isn't about competition. The closest I can think of is the original Sim City games 1-4, but even in those, there were rewards for specific achievements, but in Elite: Dangerous, there aren't even those, so ultimately, beyond a persons bragging rights, it all means nothing in game.

Connection issues are irrelevant, in my case. Not having an offline mode (and the ability to pause or stop the game when needed) means that I can't play the game during the hours that I'd prefer and have to play less than I otherwise would.

The only difference between Solo online and Solo offline apart from connection,
is that you cant reload an earlier save to redo a mistake. Its a rolling autosave.
You wont be able to Mod.
The universe wont be static.

Otherwise its the exact same game.

I'm pretty sure you're trolling but if this is true then there is no reason why there couldn't be an offline mode. The biggest difference is that because I'm forced to play online my game is affected by other players which means so far that all the markets are flat, missions require arbitrary timers and there fore I can rarely complete them due to real life and every time so far I've entered a system the markets are always down

Are we allowed to talk about this?

If so, I think the loss of offline was a huge blow for a number of reasons - the most important to me personally was that Elite was almost certain to attract an active and vibrant modding scene, and I was really looking forward to playing some of the things they came up with.

Very good point. Mod ding communities have really matured. Maybe FD is afraid moders will show them up
