It's just not the same on a monitor :-/

So while the liquid cooling system in my desktop is being repaired, I'm stuck on an Alienware laptop. It cannot even come close to running the rift in E: D. So I'm stuck grinding away on a monitor in the hope there is no wipe. Frankly, it's pretty mundane on a monitor. My life lacks meaning now...

I agree (about elite not thaty your life lacks meaning now ;) )

best bet is simply play something else. why play a game like elite when you are not enjoying it, its not like the 1st to elite gets a reward... **

**actually the original game i think the 1st to elite DID get a reward but I digress.

I love elite in VR and on a screen its just so flat and lifeless, with no sense of scale, imo.

Sounds great to me since I haven't tried the OR yet and absolutely love the game on my "old school" monitor. When the commercial OR comes out I'll probably log off my real life forever. :D

Ha, yeah it's not so much that the game is bad on a monitor, I'm just spoiled. Before my rift arrived I'd spend hours playing on a 40" tv. Once the rift arrived, though, it just ruined me for monitors (in Elite anyways, it's awful for shooters). I'm just grinding away on the laptop hoping there is no wipe. I doubt my desktop will be back by the 16th, but I'd like to have a really awesome ship when it gets returned to me. I wish there was official word on a wipe. If they confirm a wipe I'll just try the new Call Of Duty until release.

When Elite Dangerous cannot be played with a Rift anymore, you get bored. When you get bored, you decide to get a life. When you get a life, you go to a club. When you go to a club, you meet a girl. When you meet a girl, you take her home.

Always keep two computer backups to play Elite Dangerous on the Rift.

Haha! Funny!

The wife would make things pretty interesting for a while if I brought The Herp home!

For me it´s even worst since I can´t even enjoy other games on my monitor much now. Bought Far Cry 4 this weekend to test drive my new 980 (expecting a wipe in E:D I try not to grind too much) and looking at the grand vistas of Kyrat all I could think was that it looks so flat and uninteresting. Did the first mission in FC4 and hurried back into my Eagle for sightseeing.

Yes but look on the bright side, you can see a ship more than a km away :)

Same old same old with you... dude (Sorry, Dr) despite you not owning a DK2, you still seem to want everyone to know the issues you have when flying with your imaginary DK2. What's up with that? Also please explain how I managed to get hold of an advanced DK2 that allows me to see ships a few km away? See I was under the impression that my DK2 was like everyone else's, only difference is I spent a few day's tuning it to work with my eyesight.

By this point I've come to the conclusion that you should probably see an optician...

Presumably like all these people too...

"The raised res is enough to make the difference from illegible text to just about readable, which is a game-changer of sorts, but game worlds in general don’t look as dramatically sharper as I’d hoped, and the visible pixel grid remains a big distraction. I still feel like I’m watching everything through a pair of old tights. It’s a flashback to my bank heist days."

"While you can now sorta read texts in game menus and stuff, the slight increase in dot matrix resolution is not enough."

I could go on..but won't

I have near perfect vision...

<Irrelevant quotes snipped>

Your post was quoted in reference to seeing ships some distance away, which is still perfectly possible in the DK2 despite it's limited resolution so your quoted references are utterly pointless, in context.

The vast majority of people that use will agree that the experience very much outweighs the accepted limitations.

I'm sure your Sony HMD, non VR experience, is WAY better though.

i have the dk2 and all the txt is easily readable when the rift is setup right. But it is difficult to read is it is not setup properly.

Ps
we were told there will not be a wipe for release.

Why would reading text be difficult and seeing a small ship at distance be easy ? Seriously just trolling....

The HMZ I sold had a lot better picture quality than the DK2.. It's just a fact the HMZ picture is better, its's designed to watch 3d Bluerays...sigh
DK2 is for skinters in the main :p although they both have their limitations

Without wanting to feed the trolls.... but going ahead and doing it anyway.... Of course you can see the pixels in a DK2 if you scrutinise them. On the other hand if you just play the game and focus on the virtual objects depicted therein instead of focusing on the physical medium a couple of inches in front of your eyes, then you can release yourself to the absolute awe and immersion of virtual reality.

When I play non-VR games on my monitor I could sit there counting pixels too, but oddly enough I don't do that either.

I saw Delacroix's "Liberty" in the louvre a couple of weeks ago. Funnily enough I didn't really scrutinise the brushmarks or cracks in the oil either because there was something more important to see.

VR will get better, undoubtedly- this is a good thing because at the moment it's absolutely awesome in my opinion.

Because, you don't need to discern minute details to see a ship. Of course, it would (will!) be great when it's possible to say at 2km - "that's a Cobra" - but simply seeing a ship is no bother.

Picture quality <> experience.

HMZ is not VR, it's just like watching a really low resolution cinema screen.

presumably when firing upon a ship and targeting a specific module it might be nice to see where it is located, but aside from that it ruins immersion..which is what it's all about no ?

HMZ pretty much becomes as much VR as a rift when you use headtracking, only difference being fov tbh, but everything is lifesize massive and you can look with your head so yeh I would class a HMZ with headtracking as a kind of VR...and I found it more clear than the pictures watching star wars blueray on one is absolutely spiffing !!

The DK2 does have its limits, whether it is a rubbish experience or not is 100% subjective, and Dr ZF is perfectly entitled to not like it and imo his thoughts are not without some merit.

personally I completely disagree with him as to the over all experience but that is by the by. Also after setting up correctly for me with my IPD and proper positioning of the camera I can happily read ALL txt in VR in elite, and that is without supersampling which I have not tried yet.

but either way, imo you simply cant compare the HMZ to the rift as they are totally different devices, one is VR and the other isnt, simple as that really.

either way, the thing I think a lot of us forget, is the DK2 is a dev kit, its sole purpose really is to allow devs to make software so that when it does release commercially there will be some software to run on it day 1. I am convinced that the issues with DK2 will be a non-issue when it officially releases and that is all that matters.

in the mean time the decision as to whether the rift is worth a purchase in its currant form is something that each individual has to make themselves (for me it is a resounding YES) but a few naysayers in the thread is certainly no bad thing as at least it does point flaws a potential purchaser may miss if they just looked at us die hard fanboys post about it.
