I have connection issues sometimes and I still don't care that it's on-line only. I LIKE THE GAME MODES EXACTLY AS THEY ARE. Give it a rest dude.

Read Virgil Tracey's post above. He gives a good reason as to why an offline game is preferable.

Yeah, and it's posts like that which made me add to this thread so that anyone new to it wouldn't think that this is how we all feel. But they should see what I mean when I say that all the hate tended to be from those who didn't care about offline being removed.

Those points have already been made 100x times here. Use thread search before repeating the same thing. For those of us that read the forums every dayu we're sick of the same stuff coming up every 3 as if it's a new revelation. Or worse, the same people re-posting just to get their minority view posted for the hundredth time.

To my understanding online solo mode will still have all objects, including A.I. ships, rendered by my computer. If I have a very high ping with my internet, will A.I. ships be "lagging" all around me in solo online?

Edit: And my mom calls me every ~5 minutes do something so I might end up not buying this game.

I'd say anytime the servers go down it'll impact people plenty...

That's a given - if I were to make a new poll on the Eve Online forums, "Are you impacted when the Servers are Down?" I would expect 99% of people to say "Yes."
.
1% of people might say "No" just to be sarcastic.

I have an excellent internet connection but no interest in MP gaming. I need to be able to pause and save my position, and love modding.

What made Elite and FE2 so fantastic was having your own personal galaxy as a playground, to be toyed with on your terms and in your own time.

Same things i like about GTA. I've dipped a toe in the GTA MP water but it's not for me because you quickly end up getting roped into impromptu teams with strangers you're suddenly obligated towards; whether that's cooperating or competing with - as soon as you're playing with others you can no longer just do whatever you want, when you want. I prefer to follow my nose, make my own goals, and juggle them as the mood takes me. Again, pausing as necessary is vital for me - especially if i need to be regularly Googling for help on the game.

Elite was the doyen of this kind of SP self-indulgence. At heart, it's introvert crack, of the most addictive yet guilt-free kind, and so any kind of interference is highly intrusive. Think of anything that is absolutely, fundamentally best enjoyed solo, and Elite is right up there, along with dreaming, and perhaps one or two other, uh, 'pastimes'. I don't mind the occasional spectator, but even that would usually be unwelcome.

For me, Elite multiplayer might be OK for occasional kicks & grins - check out San Andreas Multi Player (SAMP) - if FD had released the FE2 sourcecode to allow something like this, i'd've considered it cool and probably have enjoyed messing about in it. Even better would've been a GTA V / GTA Online type solution, re-using the same assets in otherwise entirely separate games. But making MP the focus of a full-on Elite sequel has massively short-changed me as a player - it's no longer the Aspie's paradise i was once so enchanted by.

Bottom line: It's lost the personal touch that made it special. The sweet innocent farmer's daughter who stole my heart has become a cheap tart, and now that everyone's having some, i don't think i want anymore..

It's got about as much to do with internet connection quality as the price of bacon..

What is this post FOR? Some attempt to justify fraud by saying "you weren't really hurt by the fraud, so just accept it"? I don't see any genuine reason to post such a question.

I couldn't have put it better myself. I mean, I'm still going to play Elite Dangerous, and hopefully it'll still be a very enjoyable experience. At the very least there is a way to play alone or with friends only. But, if I can't pause my game in solo then, yeah, that'll suck pretty bad- can't even go to the bathroom without saving and quitting to avoid being killed while AFK. But, there's no such thing as the "perfect" game. Gotta take the good with the bad I guess...

Go to the bathroom when you are docked in a spaceport, works for me.

Well said Sir.

Yep, or just drop out of SC and park up if its an emergency.

I have an excellent internet connection but no interest in MP gaming.

You do understand that there is a SP mode, you just have to be connected online while you play. Its sounds like you confused online only for MP.

Connection issues are irrelevant, in my case. Not having an offline mode (and the ability to pause or stop the game when needed) means that I can't play the game during the hours that I'd prefer and have to play less than I otherwise would.

Completely false. You can stop when you want and play when you want at whatever time you want for as long as you want. Online only has no effect on that.

Apart from connection issues all the objections to online only I have read seem entirely based on confusion, misunderstanding and fear of the unknown.

Stopping (Quitting/Exiting) and pausing are entirely different things.

My votes:

1. Prefer offline play
2. Have a dependable and reliable connection.

I'm one of the very few kinds of players left in this world that prefers offline play. I just don't get as "sucked in" or as "interested" in an online game. I rarely play MMOs and the only one I'm in is Star Trek Online, and that's only because it's Star Trek, not because it's an MMO.

Primarily I don't want "my" universe affected by other people. It should remain the same way as when I left it. In an MMO or online-mode, if I go on vacation and come back a month later, trade routes might have changed. Markets may have crashed. Pristine mining areas may become depleted.

But that's all pointless now anyway. I'm ok to play online, but I won't be as "invested" in the game as I would be if it had an offline mode. In fact, I scrapped the idea of getting a new X52 HOTAS setup when offline mode was cancelled :)

In the recent past I have always preferred offline play primarily because I have had either no internet, or very slow mobile based internet. Recently though I moved to another city following my job and now incidentally have a pretty good internet connection.

I found it took a whilst to overcome the old issues of having a poor internet connection, ie. forcing steam into offline mode when I now didn't really need to. Now I am not really bothered about the whole thing and leave everything in the online state.

When I first came across Elite Dangerous I was still living in a caravan with very bad internet, though saying that I could still connect to the servers most of the time and at least play online which was surprising for the most part. Downloading the game initially took almost two days. I was seriously looking forward to offline play at the time more so though as a consequence of the situation I was in.

I have found my priorities have changed alongside my current situation though still feel a little annoyed by the whole offline dismissal situation has come about, probably more out of principle then anything. Though it doesn't really affect me now personally, less then six months ago it would have so I know what it is like for people to have sub-standard internet connections. Also there is the whole dishonor that comes about by advertising a product feature before purchase and then failing to deliver. In many realms that would be considered false-advertising.

What ever the legality of the issue the whole thing stinks of completely disregard and disrespect toward the Elite Community Base. I really hope FD's decision is truely based on a sincere decision to improve the Elite experience for all its players via other accumulative means other then just being used as a vehicle toward some form of DRM or financial based security decision.

No dramas here, i have a ton of other offline games i can play in the meantime if my internet goes down temporarily(whoopee do.. first world problems..), given its a mp game first not a single player game with mp strapped on afterwards i can handle the possibility of not being able to play it for a few hours/days.

to be honest, the game right now feels like its offline anyhow.. i never see anyone.. i cant jump with my friends.. no point in missions with them.. dont get interdicted with them.. don't interdict with them.. sometimes cant pick up the same trade routes/missions..

aside from actualy unplugging my ethernet... there isnt much difference right now!

There is actually a world of difference, technical-side. You're only viewing it from the "lack of other players" point of view.

For example, should there be an offline version, the following will probably be very obvious:

1. Entering/exiting Supercruise near instantaneous - no more checking with server about position.
2. No longer stuck in Hyperspace/Witchspace due to no response/delayed responses from server
3. Buying/selling stuff (commodities, outfitting) will be much faster - no more menus waiting for server responses to populate the table(s).
4. Claiming bounties/clearing fines will be instantaneous.
5. No more error messages like "Unable to contact server" messages whether jumping in space or doing something in the menus, and then you get dumped to the start menu.

Due to the online nature of the game, the above will ALWAYS have a slight "lag" associated with them.

Oh I get all that... I simply don't consider the second I wait here or there to contact the server an issue.. sure there have been times ive gone to turn in a mission and it cant contact the server, but for the 99.9 other times its been just fine for me.. to ask for the game to be offline to save be a total of a minute in a night's play is not worth it.. there is also an argument to be said about portability.. I cant load it up on a decent laptop while im traveling and at a hotel with crappy internet either being online.. again I get it.. but then again i would never buy a game rated as an MMO (regardless of how technically defined of an MMO it is) for those times.. thats why i have other games.. Heck, i cant even load 1/2 my games unless steam can connect to the internet.. its not much different.

My only issue with playing online only, is that id actually like to SEE someone online with me, more then once a week in passing.. but as for the technical aspects in the background, i really don't care personally..
