Open play and single player mix

I have played only in open play mode, and expected that single player mode would put me in the starting position and would be unrelated to my progress in the open play. To my surprise, I found out that the single player mode puts me in the same station where I have left in the open play, with the same assets.

I wonder, what are the implications of this. I kind of thought that if a commander enters a starport, he will also exit it. That is, if I stalk some commander at entering the station, I can expect them to exit. Ok, not too soon, if they decide to save the game and log off, but anyway. Now, it seems, the player can enter a station in open play, and exit in single player mode, thus escaping any possible stalkers. Is my understanding correct?

Yep. Been discussed to death, then reanimated, then discussed to death again, chopped up into tiny pieces, the pieces scattered to the four corners of the galaxy, then each piece lovingly found by dedicated players and brought back together into Frankenthreads. It's how it is; you can't trap someone in a station.

I'm fine with it; I play in Open, I don't care if people switch between Open and Solo on a whim. The set of "people who plan to do so to cheat" appears to overlap very closely with the set of "people who intend to grief", as they're the ones who keep saying "well, I'd switch to Solo to avoid things..." ^^

Ok, clear.

But some more consistency questions arise: in the Open, if I save game without entering hangar, do other players see my ship on the outpost's surface (and can damage)? Or I disappear from the view somehow. And when I come back, and all the spots of the outpost are blocked, how that is resolved, will I have to wait until a spot opens up?

Most stupid feature in Elite Dangerous. You can switch bettwen world like ghost among people. "Here iam here now i just vanish for yours universe and go to my". This should be two separate gameplay. This is logic and realistic. Makes more imersion to game. I dont understand why this isnt in this way.

I for one agree with the way it has been done, if I want to play online I can, but if say a friend prefers to play offline I'm not restricted in joining him or having to start over or maintain another avitar, for me it's a much better solution then having separate online/solo avitars.
I know the argument is there that it's easy mode or only for carebears but I personally think the choice should remain one that each player makes each time when loging in.

I bought into this game based on a number of factors. One of the top ones was the ability to dip in and out of open 'pvp' environment.
I like to pvp but not always, I like to pve and pvp on my terms not be forced into one or the other.
If these modes were split then open will lose not gain, if I was really forced to I would just go pve and leave open...one less player and I don't think I would be alone

Ok understand yours point. Maybe there should be some kind of switch timer between modes. Like 24h or something. To avoid exploits and vanising from space and apear 5m later in dock.

Ok guys I don't think any one has got it..........

there is one server that control the universe, they cant have multiple versions of this for Solo or Open as this would require then a complete server dedicated to each person playing Solo.

90% of the time you will NEVER see another player who plays this game due to the way the net code works.

So one universe to play them all........

Using Solo actually is also useful away from "cheating in PVP fights".
You can use it as a workaround against long waiting times in front of outposts because a lot of players currently are sitting at the same outpost, waiting for docking
(had this case at the beginning of the last Beta iteration ... I waited for 30 mins with no movements with regards to docking taking place, while 13 player ships waited at the outpost ... then I switched to Solo and was immediately granted docking access)

Oh Jackie, I so wanted to rep you for this, but I'm afraid I'm told you have to spread it around. This is sooo funny. Thank you!!!

I hate to bring this up but...

from the Gamma 2 change log - fixes:
- Randomise the asteroid composition instead of using the deterministic seed to prevent people quitting and reloading repeatedly after finding a good asteroid to get around the chunk limit

*cough*

er--- how did this end up here. Wrong thread.... Sorry.

Absolutely they can exit safely in Solo. That's magnificent!

Yeah I'm a carebear and proud of it; but I'd like my type of immersion being available: being in a densely populated system (may not happen because of the massive galaxy), and seeing all the other player ships around.

So how does a spiral galaxy have corners? :S :D

Here's another question relating to this. Apologies if it's already been answered elsewhere, and feel free to just link to the answer.

What would happen if I play solo, dock at an outpost that has 3 landing pads, then log into online play, but all landing pads are in use? Surely I wouldn't be able to "spawn" into the world because there's nowhere for my ship to go?

A related story:

I had a guy pull me out of SC then proceed to blow out my thrusters. Instead of finishing me, he went into a rant in chat about how awesome he was and how I was now his . During his oratory, 15 seconds passed and I just logged out.

When I came back in a few minutes later, my ship was still there and he was gone lol. So it's my experience that if you're allowed to log in space, your ship is safe.

Because one of the core game designs is that everyone who plays the game, no matter how, still acts in the same galaxy as everyone else. Both contributing to the dynamic events but also getting to experience those changes, even if someone chooses to play SOLO.

Personally I'm always going too play in OPEN though...maybe in a private group on certain occasions.

Do you log out instantly on the other player's screen when you choose to log out or close the game? If so, isn't that a bit of an exploit? If I ever got attacked by another player, couldn't I just log out and go play in solo mode for an hour to avoid dying?
