Backer insurance change discussion: Redux

Personally I welcome the change. I bought into beta long before they promised any level of ship insurance so I don't suffer from feeling hard done by.

Plus, if you are using ship insurance regularly, you're 'dying' too often, which has to carry penalties. I'm pleased they are adding more peril to losing your ship.

I'm still not convinced they lied. I think your post p[roves that. If they had said ship plus modules then yes. But they didnt.

"The excess fee is a percentage of the ship’s total value (including equipment)
If the commander cannot afford the excess fee and has no other ships they must use a creditor to pay the fee amount
Once the excess fee has been paid the commander is given a replacement ship and equipment identical to the load out when the ship was docked (the context is that there is an automatic insurance premium applied to all sales)"

I don't really care how FD decide they want to calculate insurance bonuses. It was never something they advertised on KS and something I didn't like being handed out (especially the way it was done initially). What I'd like is for FD to stop shoving their foot into their mouths after they've been putting it into their butts. It's been one badly handled PR decision after another. It's like the Anti-Citizen right now, real game, non -existent PR.

Recap -

After patch 2.06 a server side change was done, which changed how the Alpha and Beta backer insurance 25% deduction was calculated. Prior, your ship insurance was reduced by 25%. This was a feature presented as a pre-purchase bonus. After the patch hit now ONLY the hull gets a 25% reduction, not the modules.

Many of us are disenchanted at this, as;
1. That was not what we where promised as part of the pre-order bonus. We where promised "25% Ship" insurance, not "25% Hull" insurance. I dont appreciate being lied too.

2. It was done with no explanation, stealth, and only edited back into the patch notes later, after having been implemented as promised in the pre-order bonsues for quite some time. The only official word on it has been Frontier moderators chiming in the "ship" really only meant "hull" the whole time.

3. The major problem is that modules can outweigh the cost of the ship once upgraded, sometimes on the order of 5X+ magnitude. So, your "25% Ship" reduction in insurance becomes effectively 3ish percent reduction overall in repair costs. This leads to a whole host of other problems, especially concerning commanders with limited credits.

All I really want Frontier to do is admit the mistake, and give us back the pre-order bonus that we where promised.

Edit: On the in game workings for insurance -> "it is not car insurance. The insurance in ED covers all modules. IT IS ONLY THE DISCOUNT that is up for discussion. The insurance 'coverage' in ED is a known factor. It covers all."

Has anyone considered that it may simply be that it is a bug! That they made some change or other and screwed up the insurance calculations. Depending upon what the change was it might take them a day or two figure out a proper fix! Just a thought... :)

No, sadly it's not a bug. They posted in the change log that modules are not covered.

Oh my god, it's just a video game. Why does it even matter? You're all arguing over a tiny detail of a toy. If they'd suddenly decided to change the whole game to a rail shooter, that would be a legitimate annoyance. This is more like being outraged because the eyebrows on your GI Joe are a slightly different colour to his hair.

So. Its testing.
Does not mention insurance at all.

I wouldn't bother replying to this Pakal, a lot of this guys comments feel trollish. There's no acknowledgment of the fact you have presented or reasoning on it, just a counter. Hence why it feel's trollish IMO. Just a thought.

Its not my fault if people get upset because they arent given as big of an advantage as they hoped. Enjoy you got 25% off stock ship and stop wanting more and more.

I think the issue is not so much the insurance itself (e.g., I backed the game before any such promise was made), but rather taking away something that was promised. So to go with the GI Joe analogy, it's like they promised early buyers could choose the hair colour, then right before shipping they suddenly change it to only being able to choose the pubic hair colour, and that's supposed to be keeping the promise because technically it's hair.

I don't really care about the insurance. But it is worrying to see Frontier disregard what they sold with pre-orders. You can't change a product after the customer has paid (that's illegal, specially in the UK).

This worries me mainly because it means you can't trust FD with their word. That is both bad press for potential customers and discouraging with regards to the future of the game.

Hire a PR/marketing person ASAP or listen to them if you have one.

LOL. Not your fault, but at least you can add to their unhappiness eh.

Personally, I'm not upset by you...amused tho. :)

I really hope it's just a bug.

For me it's not really all that much different since I don't plan to fly a really large ship but it was promised to early backers. It's not that it was a "freebie" that was just "thrown in" it was a function of marketing getting folks to back the game. http://us2.campaign-archive1.com/?u=dcbf6b86b4b0c7d1c21b73b1e&id=cea4f4cd56

I will wait for my "condemnation" of the change once I have confirmation from a person at FD that this was an intended change.

It would be nice if the insurance discount kicked back to apply to the whole ship, and not just the hull. Either way i'm fine with the way things are since i bought in during PB and we dont even have 25% insurance discount announced for us yet.

Personally I'm not a fan of P2W features. I think they should never have done the insurance discounts in the first place. But it's also doesn't seem right to change it now.

I'm not fussed. I did not back the game for the insurance. I said in the past i don't insist on it, and i stand by my statement.
