What is the one piece of Advise you would offer a New Player.

Pre-flight, sitting on a docking pad or standing still: make sure you know how to navigate the UI, most importantly the left and right UI panels. A lot of the really important stuff–sking for landing permission, putting down your gear, etc.–a is on those; why it's put conveniently out of sight is a matter for debate, but it's there, so know how to get to it.

After that, when trouble strikes:

  1. Enable Flight Assist and set throttle to zero: outside of combat or the docking port (when those two coincide, you've done something weird) that will put your ship in a stable situation and give you time to…
  2. Think: That bulbous thing on top of you is there for a reason, use it. You have gone through a pre-flight checklist. Do you rememberr where the directional thrusters and landing gear are?
  3. Read: Key assignments, forums, whatever. There's a lot of information out there.
  4. Learn: After going through the above, you have gained new knowledge. Reflect on what it is and how it will help you play the game.
 
just because it can not be said often enough : take it slowly and this is not a race. Just because you can afford a bigger ship doesn't mean you should. Eagles and Sidewinders are not *subpar* ships, they just have other roles than a LakonType 7 (or even a Cobra MKIII). A well equipped Eagle is a much better fighting platform than a lousily equipped Cobra, it also has lower upcosts. And a good pilot in a well equipped Sidewinder *can* win against a bad pilot in a tricked up viper. This isn't a game of "who will be the first to get the Python of +10 Supercrusivity".

Also, keep the boost and eject all cargo bindings somewhere easy to access (beside the "lower gear" control for example). Come back when you've learnt the lesson everybody learned at some point ;)
 
Spend some time in a stocked / lightly upgraded sidewinder before jumping into bigger ships, even if you can afford bigger ships...
It is always much cheaper to be blown up in sidewinders multiple times than being blown up in bigger ships for just one time if you made mistakes.
 
If you're flying with mouse and keyboard, set your 'relative mouse y-axis' and 'relative mouse x-axis' to off.

Remember that having your thrust set in the middle of the blue lines always gives you the optimal turn speed. Learn to control the thrust. Flying with a mouse and keyboard isn't as bad as some might have you think.

With Elite: Dangerous about to open it's doors to all and sundry. There are going to be a lot of newcomers who haven't played any game like this. To help them along in their adventure, and make the experience a positive one.

I present an opportunity for all to offer one piece of sage advice, to help them along in the game.

Please try to keep it positive.

Mine:
Be patient, you will make mistakes and become frustrated, but remember, this is an adventure, not a race. And rebind your boost button to a more remote key, to avoid those station face-plant moments.

Play solo or small friendly group(just on the off chance you do meet another player who likes to blast the uninitiated). Do trade runs and keep your engines boosted to max and always run from encounters till you get a bit of moohla. Also play the tutorial missions.
 
If you dont plan to be killed, or dont plan to kill other players, play in solo or group mode. There is a lot of predators out there waiting for unsuspecting newbies.
 
Deploy landing gear before entering the station or as you are approaching an outpost. It disables boost and reduces your top speed.

On a less instructional note: Take a moment to get as close to a planet as you can, turn everything off, and just hang there in orbit looking and listening to the eerie sounds of space.
