Newcomer / Intro What do you use Ship Lights for?

My interest was piqued by the suggestion on another thread about the idea of derelict stations/ capital ships... and what a great suggestion it is.

But as is...

What, if anything do use this function for on your boats?

There are a lot of awkward station landings I've found (usually outposts) where the place is in near total darkness, having had an "incident" where I went headlong into a comms tower of some sort, I now use the lights as I'm arriving and departing darkened outposts... I also use it if I'm cargo scooping or checking out wreckage :)

Usually just peering at other ships/stations, personally, if I want to get a better look and we're in the shadow of a planet/station. I suppose they might make you easier to spot in an asteroid field or something as well.... Maybe send morse code?

Landing on dark outposts, lighting up dark asteroids for mining. Additionally, once, lighting up asteroids after "parking" in a planetary belt near an extraction point and logging back in to complete darkness with dark "spots" in front of the stars. I ended up fighting some pirates in there and it was one of scariest fights I had. Without lights it would have probably been one of the shortest too ;)

My docking routine is always: Boost when dropped out of SC, request docking, lights on, landing gear down.

When outposts are in the planet's shadow, you need them to avoid hitting protrusions and such when docking. Also, it helps to illuminate oncoming ships in stations as you dock. They are really good for mining in dark asteroid belts as well. Space is very dark sometimes, and that's awesome.

Other times I like to up-thrust around outposts at about 20% throttle with them on too, just helicoptering around looking at the detail of the models spotlighted by my lights.

ED can be incredibly immersive when you just stop and take a close look at things.

Good to know I'm not the only one doing that. Also (and offtopic) : try to position your ship with the sun in the back and watch your shadow while you lower and raise your landing gear. SO awesome :)

Yes the first this happened absolutely blew me away. I could even see my landing gear deployed. Incredible level of detail.

I flash them like hazard warning lights as I pass through the letterbox. Not that I'm flying anything really big that you need to avoid. But I am a hazard :p

Basically, pretty much the same things you use headlights for on a car.......to see and be seen and to tell people how annoying they are being when they drive/fly slooooowly :D

Is there any way to get position lights added though, mainly for around stations. I fly helicopters and you will believe how much a simple Red/green/white can help in determining orientation from a distance

The only catch is, in an atmosphere, When viewed from left you see red, when viewed from right, Green If you see white you are behind

In space, you dont know what is now "up" for the other person.

Now a couple other things to think about with this is also color blindness, so have to think about that as well

Another thing I would like to see is being able to have open comms around stations, to be able to make calls "Entering/exiting docking slot" And maybe even just flash something on the comms panel just to make people aware that someone is talking there too.

When I see another player at a station, I blink my lights at them. On that note, when are you implementing air horns FD? I need one that plays 'la cocaracha'.

I have had most use for ship lights while mining. If you are on the dark side of a planet mining rings, sometimes it can be difficult to gauge distance to the asteroids. As soon as they are lit up by my lights im close enough. Also works for lighting up cargo or chunks of rock/metal around you.

I have used them when scooping containers as they can be in the blackness of space with debris from a destroyed ship nearby that may be nearly black so it helps to view all the lovely detail and avoid unnecessary scrapes on the paintwork.

Only ever used them while mining and even there they were not much of a help, need to be a lot stronger to be useful, imo.
