Newcomer / Intro Will I Be Attacked By Other Online Players

I doubt it

It's unlikely that you will be attacked unless your carrying cargo of value or you have a bounty. Try to avoid picking up fines and try and keep a clean slate with the authorities. Personally I will kill anyone I see with a bounty upwards of 3000cr

If I select to play in Open Play will/could I be attacked by other online players or is this 'No No' ?

Yes you can switch between solo and open play as much as you like.

I haven't actually got to install yet (still at work dagnabit!) but a question along similar lines:

If a player chooses solo play, can that player later switch to open play?

Qudos to the team at Frontier as well! :)

Marvellous! Damn I cant wait to get home now!! :D

Also, don't forget about the PvE groups. There are three ways to play ED: Open(PvP on), Solo, and dedicated PvE Groups of hundreds, even a thousand players.

You can switch between them all at will, so if you want to just be alone for a while you can, or if you want to fly with others against the galaxy that too, or if you're feeling in the mood for an anything goes PvP session, go Open.

The choice is yours.

yeah your going to be attacked by other players especially since they just announced the cash prize for anyone getting elite first, its going to be a blood bath out there in the all group.

If you are attacked by another player in a high security system, are there AI police tha get involved?

yes, they will respond faster the higher the security of the system.. Sometimes the fight is over before they can arrive.. sometimes they come in and help you... its awesome!

If you want to play with people and not get set on then join a group called "Mobius" they are a PVE group only so do not attack players. Haven't been on with them but sound good. Also there was a good bit of talk from a number of communities who say they will be looking for CMRD's who pray on the newcomers.

So will be an interesting time over the next few weeks. I recommend staying in Open play though you will run in to other commanders and it makes for fun game play, quite exciting I must say. Stay in your sidewinder until your happy with control as if you get destroyed the only thing you will lose is a bit of pride.

Also the game is not very punishing when it comes to losing your ships, just look at the rebuy cost in the right panel (Default Key - 4)

Might be an idea to find your "Drop Cargo" button . If a pirate attacks you he dosent really want to kill you, he just wants some of your cargo. Giving a little cargo away is probably a lot cheaper and less time consuming than getting killed, losing ALL of your cargo and paying the insurance to get your ship back. Pirates are nice people really, just misunderstood.

Aye and dont abandon it either make sure its stolen lol.

OMG YOU'LL BE SLAIN BY ALL THE GRIEFERS RUN FOR YOUR LIFE!..

Or so you'd hear people say ;) I've been attacked twice in quite a few months.

Yes, in Open Play you can be attacked by other players. But the in-game penalties for doing so are pretty steep. Steep enough to steer truly psychotic griefers away from doing so (although they might start off at it...) In-game Bounty Hunters will have zero fear of taking you on if you have a large enough Bounty. PLUS FD has a vested interest in balancing against any grief play as needed. So if something particularly abusive comes up, FD will patch it away.

As it stands, anyone silly enough to try griefing in the most common ways will find themselves bankrupt and having to start over from ZERO over and over and over - that gets boring pretty fast.

An armed society is a polite society. Smile, open friendly comms with everyone you meet, and have a plan to kill them all. Good luck!

LOL. An armed society is a paranoid one. Watch yourself... They're all out to get you!

But really, if you stick to well populated Federation systems you should be mostly safe. Killing you in a Fed system gets them a bounty in a significant portion of human-populated space. You might die from some nub not knowing what the consequences are, but when someone in a Viper catches them at a nav beacon in their shiny new sidey, they'll learn.

Noone who is serious about competing for that prize is going to be targeting player ships since they are generally much harder to kill. NPC farming is going to be the order of the day.

Rule #1 - Do not become wanted if you don't want to be attacked.

I only attack wanted players that are NOT friendly with my factions.

Have you seen how many star systems there are out there? OK, so 400 Billion, whilst a real count of generated stars systems isn't realistic as we're not playing in that whole area.
So how about populated space.
If new players switch to galactic map and switch the view from Realistic to Map (ie don't show actual stars but data points instead), you'll see Red stars for Empire, Blue for Federation and Green for the Alliance of Independents.
There are far far more stars than players!
And most players will hang around the area where the "story" is occurring ie Sol
If you avoid that area, I'd say the chances of a player interdiction (where they pull you out of Supercruise - used to travel in system) are very low.
In tail end of beta and all of gamma, I haven't been interdicted once by players and I've been online pretty much every night for at least 3 hours. I'm about 100 LY from Sol in the Triangulus sector.
So I'd say to the OP that you are 50 times more likely to be interdicted by NPC/AI ships than players (there was a recent gamma update that pushed NPC interdictions up). Unless of course you go frequent some of the more central/Sol region star systems....
