Newcomer / Intro Useless With Analog Sticks

I have been playing Elite with a controller, as i don't like the mouse controls; however I can't use them to dog fight at all. It seems to be the same problem i have with console first person shooters. Basically i'm too jerky with the controls, thus can't aim to save my life. I have played the the 3rd combat scenario out a few times (each try taking me approximately 30 mins) but I don't seem to be getting any better. Has anybody got any tips? I'm tempted to give it up as a bad job and just accept the loss of £40.

Is it a hand controller or a js I use an old Saitek ST290 that's been through the wash a few times but works ok I always have probs aiming at things using my left thumb too. try to pick up a cheap js much better control.

It's an Xbox 360 controller. I do't really want to invest in a joystick, as i don't play any other games that require one.

If you are having issues with aiming all I can say is keep practising, but also invest in gimballed weapons as these will help you out till you adjust to it imo, but i also think this game should be played with either a mouse and keyboard or joystick, as they seem to give you much more precision. I myself have just acquired a basic thrustmaster t-flight hotas x for this game (extremely tight budget atm), and I'm having trouble hitting the broadside of an type-9, but slowly i'm getting better, still prefer mouse and keyboard though for the time being as I got it down to having pin point accuracy, but having flight assist off was a total nightmare.

So really all I am saying I guess is practise, practise and practise and you will get better using a controller with this game, also one last thing depending on what class and grade of thrusters you have in your ship, it's handling will change quite a bit.

look on ebay there are a load of second hand joysticks I don't know where you live but there are quite a few on ebay for around $10 which in my money is around £6.42 cheap enough. edit just noticed you work in gbp too

That is pretty cheap to be fair. I might give mouse and keyboard a go as well. Are both pitch and yaw bound to the mouse by default? I couldn't quite figure it out when i was playing.

Rebind your mouse and keyboard to swap yaw and roll. Roll on the A and D key. Set the mouse x-axis to yaw. Put the relative mouse buttons to on and put mouse sensitivity to about a quarter and the other three sliders to the minimum. Try that and see how it goes. HTH

Should work, David Braben uses one when travelling around the country. So not too sure what the issue with your's is.

I use a 360 game pad but I can see what you mean with being jerky. Seemed smoother in earlier builds but I'm having a little trouble staying perfectly on target too. Maybe there's a way to adjust sensitivity on it or the dead zones?

Personally I agree with the sentiment that M/KB isn't great for this game. I could not get used to it.

I'm with you OP, I agree it's cumbersome. And all the different configurations and odd button presses in order to use the controller is mind numbing. But don't give in to peer pressure. I refuse to buy an additional peripheral for one game only. It's not the cost, I don't much care about money, what I do care about is wasting money. To buy a special setup for 1 game is criminally wrong. I'll only get to play this for a few hours on the weekends mostly, if I'm lucky, and it's not worth the additional cost for that short amount of time. Neither is it really worth all the "practice" you need for this game either to be honest. And getting said peripheral would require even more practice because my old fingers are used to M+KB and/or controller. I've never used a flight stick, joystick, or HOTAS and I imagine using one won't come naturally. Must be nice for most "hardcore" players here, to have hours on end to sit in front of their PC playing & practicing a game, with fancy schmancy peripherals. I'm not really seeing the appeal... One black screen of stars looks pretty much like the next black screen of stars...

I do not use xbox controller I have thrust master x hostas pretty inexpensive. Took me ages to configure it. When I was in beta there were lots of posts on configuring controllers. There is a configuration for xbox controller in the sidewinder manual that has been posted in the forums

I use a proper joystick as I play flight sims as well.
I have to say though that in the heat of battle it is hard to get lined up with a target, I am constantly going too far one way, then the other, I think its because you have to move your arm.
Back in the day playing Elite on the Amiga, I had a little joystick that was only about three inches high, so you didnt move your whole hand, just your fingers, which react a lot quicker and more accurately than the whole hand.
Trouble is it only had two buttons.

Don't give up!

Hello, I'm a 360 controller user as well. It does take a bit of practice to get used to. I would actually suggest skipping the combat tutorials and doing some trading missions in the game proper. By the time you've flown through the slot and touched down on the pad a couple dozen times, I think you'll find that you're much more steady on the controls. Then maybe try your hand at some combat again. I'm certainly no combat expert but I can hold my own against NPCs in equal or slightly better ships (I'm not into PvP: see signature).

Also, make sure to take your time and set up control bindings that feel comfortable to you. Personally, I like pitch and roll on the left stick and yaw and vertical thrust on the right. Yaw is your best friend in a fight as it is very slow and allows you to make fine adjustments to your aim. Don't forget that you can set button combos too. For instance, A + Dpad Up = Landing Gear Down/Up.

Anyway, I agree that you shouldn't have to go buy a new peripheral just for one game. I've been playing since Beta 1.0something and haven't felt the need to run out and buy an expensive HOTAS (want, though, is another story entirely ;)) Stick with it and enjoy the cosmos!

I use a Playstation 3 dual shock controller, i find it quite good to use. ive almost set it completely up so i feel totally comfortable with all the flight controls not 100% as yet but, i am sure they have made this game to be so intricate that it will take a lot of practice and time to get it right.. GL...

I have been using a 360 controller since the first beta and I like it very much. Dogfight is smooth especially with some flight assist off when it gets nasty. So it is just like any other controller, you will need to get used to it and tweak it according to your playstyle.
