What happens if I can't rebuy my old ship back? Will I have lost... everything?

I will be better off just wiping all progress and restart with a Cobra Mk3 again. But all the progress from then... lost. I think I qill just quit completely. :( maybe one day I will start playing again, in some months then.

Well, there is a famous saying:

Don't fly what you can't afford to lose. And that definitely applies to Elite.

Sorry for your troubles, it's happened to a lot of us. Thing is to buck up and get back out there.
You learn from your own mistakes.

I definately learned that upon ship destruction fines MUST be paid. Won't forget that one.

I don't get why my insurance has to cover my fine? Im really surprised by it :/

it shouldn't.
your insurance only pays for the ship. your bounties you have to pay for yourself.

and for clarification how the insurance works:
YOU don't pay the insurance, the pilots federation does. They insure your ship for 95% of it's worth.
You have to pay the excess of 5% that is not insured.
That's why there are no daily rates or payments up front.

Elite is hard and harsh at times. Don't mean to be glib or unsympathetic but it's the fact of it and, long term, it makes the game a lot more interesting and fun. Does suck, most of us posting here were lucky enough to experience this in beta when we knew there were wipes coming anyway. Chin up though, you won't make the mistake again and in the long run a few days progress is not so much :)

For gameplay reasons, if you could die, pay the insurance and get a new ship and have fines/bounties wiped, everyone with fines would fly into the sun, pay the insurance and have clean records.

Well actually (as some people said before) the game used to offer a loan to cover the insurance. If it didn't for you, maybe they changed it, but if you want a piece of advice on this: Don't ragequit. Just calm down, let a few hours pass and think your options through: If you really were short 2,200 cr, you either didn't have that much money to begin with, or had a heavily upgraded ship, in which case you just need to rebuy your ship with one less module or weapon. In any case, the damage is not irreversible.

And even if you need to restart your game, you know, you learned something, like I learned in Beta 1: Never ever fly whithout being able to pay your insurance. Back then I just had upgraded from a Hauler to a Cobra and I was making my first run with the new ship. I got greedy an invested all my money in cargo, which I promised to myself would be the only time I did that. When I arrived at my destination, I went into the station and hit the boost buton by accident, which lead to my shiny new Cobra being smeared all over the back wall of Chango Dock. So no matter how confident you are in your abilities as a pilot: accidents happen and you'd better be prepared for them.

The way I think of it is that you wouldn't expect your fines and debts to be written off in real life if you wrote off your car.

It didn't have to be that way. The way it is now you are forced to pay the fine upon ship crash. Why not make the player keep the fine, why does it have to paid?

Yeah, but it was because I had a bounty of 194K, and the game demands that I pay it upon death. Ship + bounty exceeds 200k + my 19K cash that I am able to loan. It's not that I am raging.. it's just.. all the gameplay lost on all those upgrades... I feel that playing again will be waste of time :( but I guess you're right, the want to play will probably come again.

Flying without the insurance cash is called "flying dirty" and is abundand source of adrenaline and frustration.
I took this risk a few times yesterday before I realised what I was doing. Is it really worth several hundred credits in profit when your entire ship is at risk. Just click that minus button a few times and save yourself from the frustration I say.

Yea that's strange ... i also thought that i don't have to pay any fines after ship crash (didn't die yet)

Maybe the Pilots Federation frowns upon offenders and refuses to pay for your ship unless you are cleared of all chrages?

Hehe it's okay, i'm just saying that it's a surprise - as a new player i should know about this but i didn't ... (maybe i'm blind or sth ;])

What? they removed the loan system? Would someone please confirm this?

The loan system is still there as of yesterday (12/17/2014) I had to use it when I was 8k short of rebuy of my viper when I accidentally boosted when I meant to lower landing gear (damn updates erasing my custom controls) :p
It is still 200000 max and you payback a percentage of each profitable mission/trade you make until the balance is 0.

That was just speculation on my part. The only fines/bounties I had in the past were a few hundred credits for shooting stupid police Viper pilots who stood between me and my prey.
