Exploration is a waste of time

How is exploration supposed to work?

When I go to undiscovered region of the galaxy.

There are no systems with bases and no systems showing any system info.

This means I must fly hundreds of light years for discoveries, then I have to fly all the way back.

The profit made doesn't justify the time spent fly there and back.

A complete waste of time!!

Plot a 100 LY long route through unknown systems, equip a fuel scoop.

Scan each area, fly to every 'body' you find and target it to get the info. Dock at every station to see what astro data they will buy as you have to be 20LY away from where you got it.

That's why it's called 'Exploring' ;)

But then there is the thrill of being the first one to see something, then the profit of going back and selling your data.
Find a populated system on the edge of the frontier and make it your "home base", explore the surrounding systems, sell your data, then move to another frontier-edge system.

Sorry you are having issues OP.

The issue is you have to learn how to explore....there are many folks that are making a good amount of CR exploring. They are also exploring because they enjoy doing so...

When you get "out there" you will not find stations eventually....you are blazing a new trail. Soon miners will follow, small outposts, colonies, stations, etc....

... a waste of time for you.

Thanks for sharing your opinion.

( regarding profit, exploration alone bought me my Hauler with a full trade fit and maximised run'away setup, so yeah. )

Exploration is great fun as a bonus !!!

I like this method, you really feel as though you're centuries away from anyone, and seeing all sorts of wonders is the pay off more so than credits for me.....not interested in just space combat so I take to the space trails. now we just need to be able to personalize our cockpits with decorations from space docks.

I genuinely enjoyed exploring for awhile. Then I realized the payout just doesn't justify the time covered. What I mean by that is that everything is just too level in payouts.

I think discovering planets that have life, are able to support life after terraforming, are abundant in a particular mineral, etc should pay out MUCH more than just a few 10k more.

It was quite a thrill to have text pop up after a scan saying there was life detected on a planet. Wow, I discovered extra-terrestrial LIFE!!! And then that only nets me maybe 15k.

Oh.

Yippee.

Just a bit more than that ball of rock in the next system that is absolutely, remarkably uninteresting in every way.

Wish there was a bit more of a payout for substantial discoveries.

Once you can afford a Detail Surface Scanner your earnings will increase.

But still not enough to be justifiable. I have made several treks and explored 60-80 systems each time. This took several hours to do. Each time I would make 500-800k when all was said and done. If I wanted an Anaconda (not saying its the end all be all for exploration but lets just say that I want it) AND wanted to kit it out with decent gear, and lets say I'm making a generous 750k an hour I would have to spend close to 300 hours to achieve this. I promise you, for the vast majority of players, exploration will have become old and stale waaaaaay before this mark. Think of the games that you've spent this many hours on. Now imagine doing just one part of that game for 300 hours. No thanks. To those who persevere through to this I'm not sure whether to salute you or recommend you to a mental ward.

Robert Scott, two years odd trying to be the first man to the South Pole. Gets there to find some Norwegian chap has beaten him to it. Dies just before making it back to base. Exploring; complete waste of time.

This is why Santa won't bring you any presents this year.

I'm hoping exploring will get a huge amount of dev love and attention soon. This game revels in its realism and 400 billion star systems but exploring is pretty boring after awhile and yeah I know there are some with a high tolerance and marvel at every samey same thing they see in every system. But this is a game not Google maps universe edition in drive mode.

In system exploration really needs the love in particular.

Not massively profitable but i find it enjoyable and relaxing. All those red dwarves and icy planets dont make much money but im in this game for the long term not to make zillions an hour...

Anyone with problems exploring, are you using the Discovery scanner correctly.

1. Jump to systems locally with little to no system info.
2. assign D scanner to firegroup
3. hold fire button in the new system until D Scanner has finished scanning.
4. jump to next system
5. repeat
6. profit

Yea if its truly doing it for the ED Universe that makes it much more exciting. Of course once the data has been 'sold' by whoever does it first

Thing is, it's not. Clear your save, and you'll find the same systems unknown. The Known/Unknown thing appears to be at a player level, not a galaxy level.

More evidence: find an unknown system with a base of some sort. Now land there and check the traffic report. :)

Well what else exactly do you want? We cant do much more until planetary landings. A year or two away..

Where is there any acknowledgement that you were the first one to see something? The profit is minimal and not worth the time. You are better spent trading back and forth between two stars.

You can't name stars or planets or systems.
You cant' see what % you've explored or the value of the data.
You can't tell if anything you've discovered is unique or any different than any other ice or ringed planet...
There is no reason to even get close to a planet.
You don't get any credit for discovering it in the system notes..

Why bother
